I happened to hit it at one of those times. What would normally be a 1 minute crossing turned out to be a 45 minute detour! The Sewickley bridge connects the road to the Sewickley business district on one side and Coraopolis on the other. As others have said it can be hit or miss with this bridge because of the traffic lights at each end and the turning lanes onto it. It crosses the Ohio River and makes it a bit easier to get to Moon Twp and to the Sewickley business district from there. Other than that please be aware of the fact that this is the Penn dot chosen detour for the I 79 bridge.

The bridge connects the Strip District to Deutschtown passing by the old Heinz factory before coming to an intersection that is extremely busy with the traffic from Route 28. The bridge has gone through several rehabilitations over the years with the most recent being in 2002. The bridge is Aztec Gold in color like a majority of the other bridges in the city. I remember reading once that the ornate statues that adorn the tops of the pillars were about to be painted until a passerby screamed up to the workers to not do that and destroy the work created by Leo Lentelli. The sculptures depict four pegasi holding up a globe with the twelve signs of the zodiac. This bridge always feels like it is tucked away and hidden from view. Overlooked by the Veterans Bridge and the skyline. You only really appreciate it when you have to use it.

However, getting through the tunnel from Parkway West (376 West) can be less than glorious as the two-lane highway often bottlenecks into the tunnel when traffic is the most backed up. But, take a deep breath, proceed with caution, and enjoy that beautiful landscape that is Pittsburgh.

It's a nice long tunnel, too, just to heighten the drama. Well, it's a long tunnel to get through a damn mountain but it has that effect as well. I don't even know why I ended up coming that way as I was driving from Detroit and much to my disappointment last month Google Maps didn't direct me through this epic tunnel but instead chose a more direct, sensible route, robbing us of the sudden reveal I'd raved to my dad about. It was an approach much like any approach to just about any city. Never fear - the Holiday Inn Express I'd coincidentally booked meant we'd travel to PNC Park for all 3 Tigers games there through the Fort Pitt Tunnel and be hit with BAM!!! YOU'RE SUDDENLY DOWNTOWN!! every time. And unlike almost every bridge we crossed over traffic wasn't absolutely logjammed through this tunnel. It'd slow down but it wasn't stop and go sea of taillights lighting up red for miles like the bridges sometimes were. And it afforded a little more breathing room before breaking out into four off ramps to choose from than the bridges. Actually it lets out onto a bridge after which you better be in the right lane for one of three choices. Old hat for locals I'm sure and most people are cool about letting people over but I'm glad the tunnel lets you emerge back into daylight or nighttime and the downtown view and reorient yourself for a few seconds before you hit some spaghetti junction. Anyways, great tunnel and it had been a very long time since I've driven through one besides something brief on the freeway. I'm sitting in Hart Plaza trying to figure out the last time I've driven through the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel. At any rate I like the Fort Pitt Tunnel better.

It opened up to cars in 2004 to help take congestion away from the Liberty and Fort Pitt Tunnels. Not sure all that much has been taken away. I think it was once an HOV tunnel, and I commute alone, so I never thought to use it. It's now opened to single drivers, though, going with the flow of traffic (inbound for the morning rush, outbound for the evening rush). If you're coming downtown from the South Hills during morning rush hour, bypass that Liberty Tunnel traffic and go to Woodruff Street to take this one, and it will probably be your own personal thruway when you do. You'll come out near the Smithfield Street Bridge and can shoot into downtown from there. Great, time-saving find.
