MOST UNPROFESSIONAL STAFF Before I even arrived, they called asking to change my appointment time 3 times saying that someone else really wanted the slot. When I arrived there was no greeting and when I said hello, Amanda asked me "what do you need?" When I said I had an appointment, she responded saying she was already working on a client. I offered to come back later, but she said she could work on both of us at the same time (she sounded irritated). I came in for a loose, natural perm and brought specific reference photos of what I wanted and what I wanted to avoid. Unfortunately, the experience was disorganized, unprofessional, and resulted in over-processed hair that does not match my request. A few major concerns from my visit: * Lack of Supervision during Chemical Process: My stylist left the building while the perm solution was active on my hair. I had to set my own 20-minute timer because the environment felt disorganized. When my timer went off, she was nowhere to be found. By the time she returned--after being called by another staff member--the solution had been on for at least 5-7 minutes longer than instructed. Despite my timer being accurate, the stylist argued with me about the timing. * Safety and Hygiene: No towel was provided to protect my eyes/face from the chemicals until I specifically asked for one. During the rinse, the water was sprayed so aggressively that it got all over my face and eyes. I was told this was "necessary" to get the solution out, but I ended up leaving the salon with the back of my shirt completely soaked. * Rough Handling: The stylist was not gentle while removing the rollers, essentially ripping them out of my fine hair. It felt like significant mechanical breakage was occurring. * The Result: Because the solution was left on too long and the rods used were much smaller than my reference photos (when I raised concerns about their size she dismissed it saying it would look better), my hair is now over-processed, frizzy, and smells strongly of sulfur even after multiple washes. I am a friendly person and tried to give the benefit of the doubt throughout the appointment, but the lack of care and the argumentative attitude when I pointed out the timing was unacceptable. I would not recommend this salon for chemical services, especially if you have fine hair. read more

I'm giving 10s across the board for Hukilau salon! My stylist was the curl master Marcus and he did a phenomenal job with my hair. He took my dull, dry, tumbleweed island bush and transformed it into a beautiful blonde bouclè! Besides my hair, I am still blown away (no pun intended) by my overall experience. Hukilau salon gives you the service of an upscale/sophisticated salon and the warm, cozy comfort of a hometown hairdresser. Mil graciassss again to the magnificent Marcus, his assistant Grace and also Trish (owner) for the amazing Hair-apy sesh! I got my hair styled at Hukilau for a wedding and it turned out to be beautiful! I don't remember who did my hair-two women worked on it and they did a great job. Everyone was super nice and we were in and out quickly. They were able to make time for my sister and I in for one cut & blow dry, and for me, a blow dry with style (curls and pinned to the side with a beautiful flower in the back) super last minute, just the day before the wedding. Prices were also reasonable. I highly recommend! read more

Loved the color the toner gave me, but not happy about the pricing and this scab I got. 1. My appointment was set for 3:30PM and didn't get in until 4PM 2. Toner was out in and owner/stylist Trish set the timer and left the salon 3. Got my hair washed and felt her vigorously scrubbing the corner of my forehead, and hurt a bit 4. Checked out and saw that my total for the service was $133 -$60 toner -$40 "blowout" -$27 product I purchased The so called "blowout" I received was literally a basic blow dry. My hair is naturally straight and there was absolutely no volume that's supposed to make it a blowout. So after I talked to my sister about the price, I'm confused why I was charged $40 for a simple dry. 5. Flipped my hair and remembered my forehead hurting during wash, and saw this. I think if she check my toner during the process, it wouldn't have happened. But instead, she was MIA and scrubbed the heck out of my head. Luckily I wear my hair split in the middle or I would be furious especially with having a photo shoot tomorrow. 6. I have all these spots on my scalp from the way she carelessly applied the toner all the way to my roots where I didn't even need it. I only came to tone the blond parts that grew out half way down my head. My scalp looks disgusting! I expected a lot more since I got serviced from the owner Trish. I would get serviced by someone else that would've cared more and wouldn't rip me off. She felt like she was in a rush to go home, with me being the last and only client in at the time. She was brushing my hair aggressive during the blow dry. If I could advise any new customer, I would recommend booking with anyone else besides Trish the owner. read more

So it's now June, I had my hair done here 7 months ago, and from the insane damage (read original review for the list of what happened) I may have to go to a pixie cut because my hair is falling out in chunks at the site of where all the damage happened. It's like cotton candy and I have to sleep in hair masks and baby my hair in ways I never had to before. The lasting damage is insane. My hair won't be the same until it's cut off. I've spent hundreds of dollars fixing and treating my hair from this damage. Absolutely do not recommend Trish. read more

Trish and Brittney were absolutely AMAZING. My hair is thick and pin straight and usually can't hold a curl for over half an hour but Brittney was patient, used over half a can of hairspray, and managed to get my hair to hold for the entire length of the wedding/reception! Pricing was extremely reasonable for how long the updo took and they even placed fresh flowers in my hair afterward. My hair rarely turns out the way I want based on photos I show stylists but this time it did! The location could not have been more perfect. There aren't too many salons in Laie but my friend and I are so happy we found this one! These ladies went above and beyond and I am so bummed we were only able to go to the salon once. I had thought that this was going to be a 5 Star review. I had hoped it would since I live on the north shore and there are so few good salons here. Initially, the stylists seemed friendly and competent, it's a cute little place off in the corner of the Polynesian Cultural Center. So much potential. And yet as my time wore on, it became clear that they were disorganized and careless. Lackadaisical, for sure. I was clear on the phone and several times during my time there that I had a funeral to attend. Which is why I double checked with the salon and then scheduled an appt so that I would have plenty of time to come home and get ready. I understand that things happen in the world of salons. Yet, I was guaranteed that it wouldn't take long, that I would be done by a certain time. After watching her talk story with another client, assigning a (very hesitant) barber who had the insight to know the limitations of his training, the work of a stylist, and then finally having to remind her of my time crunch, i made my husband late for the funeral of his colleague's wife. Because of their incompetence, I left the salon with my hair unconditioned and with hair dye on my face. Such a disaster but most of all, because of their thoughtlessness, my husband was the one made to look thoughtless as we walked into the services late and people stared. My husband waited for me in front of our house in his best suit and I ended up changing in the car on the way because this place was so disorganized and inconsiderate. It's been open for some time and I'm only the third review. There's probably a reason for that. I'm sad this was my experience (it was a really really horrible experience) but I had to be sure to write this honest review since their actions had such an impact. Go to Adonai's in Haleiwa. If you like feeling safe, wearing a mask and don't feel like getting covid while you are getting your hair done, steer clear. I wished I read the reviews before I went, regarding the owner sharing her conspiracy theories with clients. Believe what you will, but follow the freakin law and make your clients feel safe. I will never return and will tell all of my friends who are born and raised here to not go either. My haircut is fine, but I was overwhelmed by the negligence in mask wearing at this salon. 3/4 hairdressers were not wearing their masks.. along with 2 customers. Myself and one other staff member were wearing a mask. Two others on their chins and the owner didn't looked like she owned one. At first I thought maybe she just took a break before her client arrived, but midway through my shampoo, I was contemplating leaving afterwards but I really needed a haircut. Luckily I had my N95 mask. It was also a very tiny space. I feel so sad for the seniors or immunocompromised who might come in for a cut there and are too shy to say anything. It's shameful really. Oh it's tiny too and no fresh air. She also was very rude during the haircut, had a very condescending tone towards the other workers, blabbing about stuff she wanted to change in the salon to her employees. She stopped cutting my hair, to explain all these things to them. And I was like lady, I don't have all day and I don't want to hear about your Feng shui problems. The morning I came in I didn't say much she kinda just did her thing which kinda worried me because my hairstylists I've worked w/in the past normally like to hear every detail of what I wanted. They were already busy and I had an appointment and another customer had walked in without and was in a hurry but they managed to accommodate us all in a professional and timely manner. I was really happy with how it looked because it looked really natural and blended smoothly but it wasn't the color I wanted to achieve yet. But that's not her fault because I have really dark thick virgin hair and it would take time to make it as light as I wanted it. I've had my hair done by many people all over the world. I always try to find the best people I can, because my hair is all I have going for me. I can usually tell right away how skillful a person is doing my hair. Yesterday I had the pleasure of working with Trish, who owns the salon, and my experience was great. I needed my regrowth touched up to platinum blonde which is very hard to do. Matching the current color, evenly distributing the bleach, and maintaining the hairs integrity is no easy task. And she was able to do it quite possibly better than anyone previously had done in the past. I was very impressed. We requested and were given a quote over the phone for my daughter. After the work was completed, we were charged $100 over what was quoted (almost 3x the original quote). Not once did Trish tell us the cost difference. When my daughter called her back to discuss she said that her staff had misquoted us. She also charged for additional services (blow dry) that my daughter said she didn't need or want, asked to come 30 minutes later than our original appointment because "she was running behind" and took an hour longer than promised. I left a message with Trish to resolve this but received no response. We've given the Hukilau Salon a lot of business but we most likely won't be back. The salon shouldn't be giving quotes over the phone if they won't honor them and they should communicate clearly and up front what their charges are. read more

I have never taken the time to write a yelp review in my life but I'm writing this as i'm waiting in the chairs outside of the salon while the doors are locked cause no one is even here and my appointment was supposed to start at 10am but once again, it's another shitty experience with hukilau salon. The first time I came to hukilau salon they charged me over $350 for my hair to not only be the wrong color, but with probably the worst highlights I've ever seen. I'm now here to get my hair cut because the color and highlights is so bad i just want it gone, so i'm trying to chop it all off. I had an appointment two days ago to get it cut here, and I waited 35 minutes after my appointment was supposed to start for them to not have time to even start my haircut. I rescheduled my appointment for this morning at 10am. It's currently 10:12 and the doors are still locked with no one in sight. I wouldn't come here no matter how desperate you are for a hair cut/color. Youre better off doing it yourself. If i could give 0 stars I would. read more

So I have never left a yelp review before so I really mean this. Trish, the owner, is a bully. Sure she says nice things and a has a happy tone but she did not give me the haircut I asked for. She will be like oh my gosh so cute, best haircut of your life. She didn't look at the picture I showed her for more than half a second. Never reviewed with me how long it would be in what parts. She cut off 6 inches more than I asked. And basically said the cut that I wanted wasn't doable. She also shoved I mean shoved my head whatever direction she wanted. I didn't realize what had happened until I left. I wish I never set foot in this shop. It's not a bad haircut, her technique seemed good, but no matter how good it is it will never be what I asked for. My hair is gone. I can't put it in a pony tail, not even pig tails. It will take years to grow to be anything that I wanted. Truly a nightmare. read more
