Three floors with books stacked floor to ceiling on bookshelves with 10-12 shelves each. They even have a staff recommendation area, which was fun to peruse. Excellent organization of available books, separated nonfiction and fiction (also separated into genre). The owner was very knowledgeable and patient and kind. Ahead of me in line, he listened to a gentleman who was eager to tell him about the books he's read. Then he helped the next lady to find fiction in Morocco, even suggesting several authors to look up. I bought a fiction book that looked interesting (my stack of books to read grows faster than I can keep up--it's awesome). If you're in Amsterdam, this is a great place to visit to find a book to enjoy as you drink. coffee, between people watching, of course! Highly recommend!!

I love the layout and the feel (and smell) of a used bookstore and this one did not disappoint. The sci-fi/fantasy section was wonderful and I wish I had more time to peruse, though I did find a nice paperback for the flight home. The person working, Fred (I think that was his name) was pleasure to converse with (pic attached). Again, I wish I had more time. Definitely recommend to anyone who visits the city and loves to read.

What comes to mind when I think of the American Book Center a pretty average bookshop that does not…read morestand out from the rest, despite them speaking English. I always try to stop in here every once in a blue moon to see if a book will stand out for me to purchase. Once in a while, I get lucky to find a book that strikes my interest. However, most of the time I try to check out other bookstores that have that warm, cozy, and friendly feeling because half of the time I feel they definitely don't got it.

My squee of delight could probably be heard all down the street as some of the books for sale were in the English language! I went in, and let me tell ya, if you are a book lover, then this is paradise located in the Des Baarsjes area of Amsterdam! The shop is filled to the brim with books. There's 3 whole section with English books and while it may look hap-hazard, the owner has them all in alphabetical order by author last name!! Speaking of the owner, he's a lovely elderly gentleman who vaguely resembles Einstein with his shock of white hair, and he speaks great English and is super friendly. I spent a wonderful time browsing thru the shelves and he's even got a separate small bookshelf filled with a range of sub-continental Asian diaspora authors! I so plan to come back for a more leisurely browsing and would urge other book-lovers to come check this place out too. The only downside is that the bookshop is only open Fridays & Saturday's and I think it's till 5pm, but not sure so just call and check ahead. The store is several stories with many flights of stairs which makes browsing around a little more difficult than some. Since this is a smaller store, the selection and depth within each category of books is more limited. You may find books at better prices with other retailers but it is so nice to walk into a bookstore and walk out with your purchase. Waterstone's also has a frequent purchase card.
