It's situated close to like 5 other bookstores, one that even won some international award of some sort, but I keep coming back to Waterstone's and the least of the reasons not being their high prices.
I like the layout, a lot. It reminds me of boutique-y bookstores growing up, where it's not just the hits and the famous that gets spotlight. Here, you can walk in and find something you've never heard anyone else talk about. They even have a lot of floor space devoted to food items, because, hey, who doesn't miss good food here in the Netherlands?
The store is extensive and has a lot of floors that you have the luxury of climbing at your leisure. The sections are clearly demarcated and organised to enable searches easy. The high ceiling is welcoming, and also does some wonders with the noise.
I love the curation here - they have racks for books loved by the staff, a couple racks for best-sellers, and then a few for forgotten titles and new books, etc. All in all, a great place to discover literature that you couldn't otherwise find on some online store that only exists to make money for itself (you know who I am talking about).
The prices are definitely more expensive than buying online, but hey, it's great to get to talk to people once in a while. I will keep coming here, and so should you. read more
