So, I'm wandering through Amsterdam and sure enough I discover a second-hand English language bookshop nestled at the side of one of the canals. Well, not surprisingly, at least where I'm concerned, I decided to step in and have a look around - I certainly can't let a bookshop, especially in a foreign land, go by without paying it a visit. Well, it is certainly what one would expect from a second-hand hand bookshop - lots of second-hand books and a few rooms stacked to the roof. Fortunately all of the duplicates are placed up high so you don't have to climb up ladders to browse all of they are all at eye level. There also have a whole basement level full of science-fiction and fantasy, and I am now kicking myself upon realising that I completely forgot to look for the one book that I have been looking for for ages - Dragon Riders of Pern.

Not sure where this multi-level used book store near the University of Amsterdam gets its stock, but they have a surprisingly diverse and plentiful variety of English language titles, from Booker Prize and National Book Award nominees to classic fiction, to even Oprah's Book Club picks. Prices for paperbacks generally hover in the 5-6 Euro range, which is obviously higher than Goodwill prices, but still reasonable for people craving a fresh infusion of good reads without breaking the bank. The shop is located next to a "coffee shop" (yes, that Amsterdam kind of coffee shop), so be prepared for an intermittently strong aroma of weed as you browse the shelves.

Was spring cleaning the house and finally gathered my pile of read English books, so I went into The Book Exchange to sell some of them. The shop is run by a very friendly North American guy who pays about 1/4 of the selling price. Not a huge amount, but it was all in the spirit of cleaning up! Oh but did I mention that I left with more books than I came in with? This shop's selection, although a bit dusty, is seriously attractive! I guess that's why they call it the book EXCHANGE..

A very nice bookstore with a large selection! Mostly secondhand books, but some new as well.

Review Highlights - The Book Exchange

The sign out front says English language books, but they have quite a few in Dutch and a small section with other languages as well.

Hopelijk
