I'm a dentist, and I love my dentist and hygienist!…read more Julie is the best hygienist...so conscientious and caring with lots of experience! She's thorough, but also non-judgmental when you're home care isn't perfect. I'm always comfortable in her chair. Dr. Phillips is a highly trained cosmetic dentist that I sought out to do my work, now that I'm retired. So far, she's done one crown and it's my favorite! I'm truly looking forward to having more complex work done by this talented professional. The front desk staff is also wonderful; I feel so welcome, and they couldn't be friendlier!

I went to Tonka Smiles for a cleaning and exam back in 10/2025. They are in network with the…read moreHealthPartners dental insurance I had at the time and offer nitrous. As someone who prefers female dentists, I love that the staff is all women. :) The team - Dr. Phillips, Julie, RDH, Kara, RDA, and the front desk staff - are friendly and thorough. The main reason this rating is 4 rather than 5 stars is that I felt they recommended work I didn't really need, specifically a crown. Dr. Philips recommended a crown on my bottom right molar where I had a root canal in 11/2017. I'm 8 years out from the procedure and neither the endodontist who did the root canal nor the 3 general dentists I saw between 2018-25 said I needed one. Though she said it's common practice to place a crown after a root canal to avoid the tooth from breaking, I'm reluctant to undergo a procedure on a tooth that has caused zero issues for 8 years. At first I thought she found something other dentists missed but later realized that 4 other dentists (endodontist followed by 3 general dentists) would have said something sooner if I really needed a crown. Other than the root canal, there was no abnormal findings clinically or on the x-ray that convinced me to follow Dr. Phillips' recommendation that I get a crown. Now, if I had a cavity, I would get that filled right away to avoid further decay. But when none of my previous dentists over the past 8 years told me I need a crown and I'm not having pain in that tooth, why create work when none is needed? She also recommended fixing a small chip on one of my front teeth and Invisalign from my bottom teeth, though both were cosmetic so I declined. By comparison, my previous dentist of 5 years NEVER recommended any of the above work. To her credit, Dr. Phillips wasn't pushy about getting the work done. When I asked if it's likely I'd lose the tooth over the next few months if I don't get a crown, she couldn't say. I know it's not always possible to predict medical/dental outcomes but her not knowing told me that I didn't have to make a decision right away and I'd likely be fine without the crown. If the recommendation for a crown was made because I had pain and/or a fracture/other abnormal pathology was found, I'd be more on board getting it, especially if I had been going to the practice for years and didn't need dental work beyond cleanings until now. But as a first time patient to the practice, having a procedure recommended for a tooth that hasn't caused pain or other issues for 8 years makes me question whether I truly need the crown or it's financially motivated. I moved back to my home state in late March so I cancelled the cleaning previously scheduled for April. If I were to see them again (as I want to move back to MN in a few years) and they recommended any dental work beyond bi-annual cleanings, I'd get a second opinion before agreeing to anything. However, I'd more likely find another dental practice that is more conservative in their recommendations, similar to the dentist I previously saw prior to moving to MN.

I never really had a dental hygienist that stood out to me before, but Amy was wonderful!!! I could…read moretell that I wasn't just a number to her, but that she truly cared about me and about the people she serves. Her heart is in her work. And not only that, she's also very skilled and worked very gently and carefully. Even though I have sensitive teeth, my experience was actually pleasant this time being at the dentist. I could also tell from the information she shared with me that she keeps up with current research and embraces holistic nutrition and also has knowledge about our body's other systems that affect our overall health, including our teeth. I also met with Dr. Schwartz for my exam. I could sense that his number one priority was what is best for the patient, and he treated me as well as a person would treat a family member. The cost of the cleaning and exam was affordable too, especially considering the quality of care.

I have been a patient for over 25 years. Today was absolutely unacceptable experience. I switched…read moreinsurances and mentioned it to my hygienist. The reply was " I clean teeth, front desk takes care of that". I told her I already informed front desk, and letting her know, if additional services beside cleaning were needed ( I expected this to be a common knowledge). This was not a typical response i usually receive. Then my mouth was examined and I sensed a great agitation/urgency wave from the hygienist. I was told my gums state declined from last time and we need to do something and develop a plan. I am not sure if my history was reviewed prior to my arrival. I replied, I have been living with my mouth for a long time and cleaning every 3 months. Onto cleaning: I asked for a numbing jel prior to cleaning. I was put flat in a chair, no overhead light. When top gum was covered, I asked to stop/ complete lower gum later and raise my head, as gel leaks into a throat typically in horizontal position. There was no actual wait time between application of gel and measurements by a sharp ( loud measurements with front desk clerk involved in a process recording mm). Then there were pictures taken, at one point I heard: " I don't want to see this". The hygienist stated I need to be seen by a doctor, but the Dr was not in a clinic at the time of my appointment (verified by the same front desk clerk). The cleaning/rinsing with laser like plink started, but not enough water was given, so my mouth was dry. I asked why I was not rinsed periodically, to which reply was the water is already a part of cleaning plick. I was asked to close my mouth periodically with metal cleaning tip very close to my lips. I actually felt my lips brushing against some surface when I close my mouth almost every time. I asked hygienist to keep the metal piece farther. She stopped and stated: Let's see a doctor....but the doctor was not in. I never saw a doctor, even thru Hygienist sounded like it's urgent and my gums were actively bleeding. Instead, front desk clerk appeared and wanted to reschedule my appointment. I reported noticeable agitation from hygienist, felt very unwelcomed as a client, basically disrespected. I wondered, if hygienist wanted to actually clean my mouth, do her job. Hygienist disappeared, no doctor in site, my mouth dry and still having gel in. I stated I will be transitioning my cares away to another service Provider.

I definitely recommend.
