Their sourdough is one of the best that I have had, way better than "bread alone", which strangely seems to be making its way more often than this brand (its name is even stranger). BEST BREAD EVER! I swear by this place! You can't go wrong with any of their homemade breads, especially their dinner buns (incredibly tasty and yummy!). Been going to this place for years! Wow who would have thought 1 & 9 has such a great cafe/bakery! I had the mozzarella on the ciabatta ($6.25) while the man had the italian on italian (also $6.25). Cappuccino came from a keurig type machine so not for those purists. Just as everyone has mentioned the bread was the star of the sandwich. The space is very clean and large with Italian inspired furniture. The ambiance calls for a good book and a hot cup of coffee. If you are ever on 1&9 and stuck in traffic which is probably always do not hesitate to stop by. read more

What a great little place to grab breakfast or lunch! They converted a corner of the bread factory building into a cute little coffee shop. I came in for lunch and ordered the roast turkey avocado sandwich and a cup of coffee. Service was quick, you order at the counter and then they bring it to your table! They let me choose which fresh roll i wanted my sandwich on so i picked multigrain. The sandwich had avocado lettuce tomato and mayo and was only $5.99! The size was huge and they give you a side of potato chips. It blows chain restaurants like panera out of the water in terms of price and food quality. The coffee was just okay so i will probably stick with sandwiches. Their pastry counter had an amazing selection so I can't wait to try more things from this place! read more

One word: Speaking of artisan... I'd give this bakery slash cafe 4 stars, but it's on Tonnelle... so 3--I like alliteration. Kidding aside, it's on Tonnelle!!--so please let me feel this way. The upside: if you can make it through the hell that is 1/9 and/or Kennedy Boulevard, you can probably drive anywhere in America. Final word: Their Bread. This is a real deal a bakery with a side of cafe because why not. And real deal because it's definitely NOT one of those things that calls itself a bake shop, but sells baked goods made by other suppliers instead. Load up on the breads first before you order the fancy because, you know, this bakery period, and worry about the vicious delish devil-in-disguise artisan carbs later, which come in the form of tomato and olive Foccacia, baguettes, boules, and dinner rolls to mention a few, whole grains included. Extra words: Warm, roomy, comfortable interior with several seats, including a long, communal table in the center aisle, flanked by a bench on one side and a head chair the sort that makes you feel like you're about to have coffee with Caesar... Unless they got rid of the throne. Ambiance is made cozy(ier) by the couches... (Only you have to remember they're for everyone and everything, including kids' shoes... Which probably might have had close contact with a fresh lump of cough material outside because of the mere and ugly fact that some folks just seem to enjoy spitting instead of swallowing their personal matters.) Additional note: Not much to add about the fairly quiet atmosphere conducive to working on your screen (despite the couple (multiple?) A commercial bread purveyor, with a beautiful little Cafe around back. Fresh sandwiches, salads, soups, and of course breads, a very large selection. Nicely decorated with wood and stone. Clean and neat. In the Cafe, there is a large TV playing a video of the company and their process. Very interesting. We will be back soon. read more

Note that this is not a full breakfast, brunch of lunch spot although it is categorized as such. Breadman Cafe is an extension of the Hudson Bread factory next door and they offer coffee, smoothies, desserts, 5 to 8 different sandwiches and of course breads. I don't think they have a grill so the sandwiches are cold cuts and whatnot. We did have their tuna fish and turkey club sandwich and it was very good and of course the bread was fresh and delicious. However, they have an extremely limited selection, probably just to have some food preparation for the people working in the factory so it's really nothing to go out of your way for if you want a meal. read more

Saw this place by the side of the road and decided to stop. It is attached to a large commercial bakery. The bread here is awesome. I had fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil and balsalmic vinegar on a ciabatta roll that was just about perfect. Can't wait to come back for more. Came here for lunch today with the boyfriend and enjoyed my sandwich. Not sure what it was called but I had turkey, swiss, avocado and fresh spring greens on a pumpernickel-onion roll. It was delicious, but the onion flavor on the bread was a little overpowering, next time I'll stick to what the sandwich actually comes with. I also had the tomato-basil soup, yummy, but nothing out of this world. Boyfriend had a BLT that he was pleased to see was a double decker. I had a bite and it was delish. My only complaint is the coffee, I got self-serve and could have gone without it. Maybe next time I'll get a cappuccino instead. They also have a smoothie bar and some pretty enticing desserts. As for the place itself, it's adorable! They have different types of seating - from benches, to cushiony chairs to regular ones, and the walls have a rustic feel. Really cute place and surprisingly not busy. The BLT was $5.25 & the one I had was around $6 and change, but including the soup, coffee, and an iced tea our total came to around $20. Wow..This place is randomly located on 1&9 but it's actually got a great interior that would be great for lunch and some seriously amazing bread! I bought the multigrain or "Healthy" bread for me and a few friends and everyone really enjoyed it a lot. I bought two loaves that lasted for a long time! I think you can get half loaves or whole loaves, but I went with whole. These are serious loaves of bread also. Like, for real, you could freeze them and actually knock someone out with them if you wanted-definitely not some Wonder bread style knockoff here. Be prepared: you can curl with these things. The bread is fresh and delicious, and I highly recommend it. Only thing I will say is to be careful when toasting. I like my toast a bit darker, but if you let this bread toast too long, it gets much harder and less enjoyable to bite into, so keep it on the "light toast" side. read more

I come here for the Hudson Bakery - nothing beats getting warm fresh bread straight from their ovens in the back! You'll see the bakery trucks lined up behind the building. I usually end up tearing into the bread in my car ride home - unable to resist the smell and warmth emanating from the bags. I like to get the raisin walnut for continental breakfasts, health pullman for sandwiches, and francese to make french toast. If I go overboard, I'll freeze the loaves. They can slice the loaves for you, but I prefer them whole and cutting them myself. For the same price as processed bread from the supermarkets, I get fresh, delicious bread from Hudson's. I've eaten at the cafe as well on Saturday for tasty sandwiches and love the comfort of the oversized leather couches and the roomy comfortable interior that makes an ideal lounge-and-read-newspapers space. The bakery ends my shopping row on Tonnelle - starting south from H-mart, hitting Lowes & Home Depot, gas across Home Depot, Target, and Pathmark. They are closed on Sundays. read more

So I was going on to my friend who works at Der Kommissar about how much I like their pretzel rolls. "That's fitting", he tells me, as it turns out they're baked in Jersey not far from where I live. So knowing that I had to take a ride out and get some to enjoy at home. Seemed like a nice place with that great bakery smell. I've been coming to Hudson Bread weekly to get freshly baked breads. They have a wide variety of options and if you go in the morning, all the breads will be warm! Very delicious! Their baguettes are my favorite especially the one with olives or the one with raisins/walnuts. Highly recommend this place for breads! We came to this place this weekend thanks to reviews on yelp. We were looking for a place to have a good, quick, but not so pricey brunch. Unfortunately they did not have an extensive menu - in fact they only had a few lunch sandwiches and salads. So we decided to only get a blueberry muffin (which was delicious) and two skim cappuccinos, which were AWESOME. The negative thing about this place is our bill came out to $18 which was too much in my opinion for 2 small skim cappuccinos with an extra shot. When we asked why it was so much, he said that each coffee cost $7 EACH because of the extra shot. While it was petty good, I don't think it was worth that much. The breads did look delicious but we didn't get to try some. read more

Their bread is wonderful and fresh, mostly tasty! I love the raisin walnut bread most and secondly the 7 grain boules. If you eat it the same day it rocks. The other days they are still fresh as well. Overall this place has great bread. The location is not so interesting though. Also the cashier doesn't really know the prices if not listed on the bread. We bought some bread behind the glass and she told us one price but when checking out it was higher. She did that on two different occasions. I'm not sure if that was on purpose or does she really not know the actual price? She doesn't apologize so it's questionable. We had to correct her twice and ever since then we don't purchase anything not written w/ a price. I still can't find a place with tasty bread like theirs. This place is hidden on 1&9 in the Hudson Bread factory. For those of you who don't know, Hudson Bread supplies rolls, bread, etc, to many restaurants throughout the metro NYC area. Their stuff is 5 star. The Breadman Cafe, however, is only 4 star. The reason being, is that despite making very tasty sandwiches on the amazing fresh baked Hudson Breads, their service is hit-or-miss. There is a UFC-ish training facility attached to the back of the cafe, and many of the Eastern European-seeming waitresses are cavorting with giant, Klitschko-type dudes, while you wait to place your order. Great place to eat some fresh baked bread,sandwiches, and drink good coffee, etc. When I walked in it seemed like I walked into one of Italy's designed Tuscan restaurant, with rustic and earthy colors, terracotta tiles, dark wood furnishing accessories including rough painted walls.
