Driving through Hudson Valley in New York with my bestie, we rolled into Beacon, New York on Sunday midday. There was a farmer's market and most of the shops and eateries were open! Great! Hudson Beach Glass was one of the shops open and I found GREAT gifts for family and friends back home (Hawaii). I love glass art and the objets d' art I found there were truly beautiful, delicate and one of a kind! Can't beat that! We signed up for the glass blowing class. Since it is November, they were doing Christmas Ornaments. This was an exceptionally interesting, fun and, as it turns out, educational experience. The two woman who worked with us, Sara and Michela (maybe spelled wrong, I apologize) loved what they do and it showed. They were a real pleasure to work with and explained every step along the way. They answered all of our off the wall questions about the glass, the materials, the furnace and everything else that we thought of. The cost, accounting for the time, materials and expertise is well worth it. We'll definitely try to make it down during the year to try our hand at the other glass objects they offer. The owner, working in the gallery on this day, was also great to talk to, offering insights into the business, their building and the Village of Beacon itself which was fun to explore. My mom and I both made an ornament. Each of us got very thorough directions even though we heard the other get the instructions, we were very happy about that and appreciated the one on one experience for each of us! We were a group of four, that came to blow our own Christmas ornaments. You get to pick a design, pick the colors you'd like, and you get to partake in the process. Let me first say, that Kathleen, was absolutely wonderful. Down to earth, kind, knowledgeable, and talented. I wish we were a bit more hands on for the ornament making. Other than rotating a rod in the fire, and blowing into the hose, the instructor did everything else. I do understand, that they want the finished product to look good, and also safety is a factor too. I wish I'd learned a new skill. It was still a fun experience, and I would recommend it. read more

We love this place! There's an upstairs gallery, and downstairs are a number of functional and art glass pieces. There is an area in the store, where a professional glass, blower leads, customers, for a fee, through the creation of a piece of glass art. It would be near impossible to enter through the doors and not walk away without purchasing some piece of hand blown glass, jewelry or art. We certainly did not. Prices are more than reasonable and the most difficult part is choosing which piece to take home with you. We also also enjoyed watching one of the artists create a small vase. I booked my one on one glass blowing experience a while ago and finally did it this past weekend. Katherine was wonderful. She explained step by step how to make a paperweight. I got to pick the colors that would be displayed. The process of making the paperweight was mind blowing. I was forging lava glass. It was slightly warm in the studio but not unbearable. I really liked rolling the glass and using the various tools. The finished product is one of a kind and pretty darn awesome. Highly recommend. read more

You can't come to beacon without a visit or two at Hudson Beach Glass. The store itself is filled with beautiful glass arts from cute little beautiful marbles to a large elegant displayable plate. My kids attended the glass ornament making workshop and it was so much fun! It's a very unique experience and it's only $40 for each child! Note, it's for age 6 and up. Better to make reservation ahead of your visit, as the glass making artist only works with one person at a time for this workshop. read more

If you're looking for a one-of-a-kind gift this is the place to look. A couple of years ago I was looking for a wedding gift for a friend in Japan. It had to be; made here, tasteful, unique, and when not in use, an object-dart. I found something to serve sushi or sashimi. The design on the bottom was evocative of a river bed, while the top is perfectly smooth. It can be put in the refrigerator to keep the food cold. I heard it was a big hit with his wife. read more

** you can book & reserve a mini-glass ornament making class here ** I believe it is $35 per person We checked the price and there is no significant markup from what you'd pay for a glass ornament here, versus making your own, and being able to choose your own designs, colors, and experience labor that goes into it. The glass ornament does take 24 hours to cool down so if you're not staying in town over the weekend ask them to ship it to you. We paid $10 for two ornaments to be shipped into NYC. Although the actual ornament needs time to cure, you do get to take home your design in a marble - this is because a marble only takes about 10-15 minutes to cool/harden versus a thinned out ornament. It's a great experience and I highly recommend anyone who's visiting in the area to try it out. It's considerably cheaper upstate versus doing the same experience somewhere in the city. Perhaps consider it after hiking in a trail nearby since you'll be in the area anyways. I saw that street parking is available as well. read more

Upon seeing what they are offering, I can totally agree why it is listed as top 2 of must to visit place in Beacon. All the hand made displays/items they are selling are exquisite. Ive been in the area forever, but never stopped in. Today I went in and found a super treasure of Beacon. The art in this place is amazing - My eyes couldnt stop browsing all the glass creations. The part I found really intriguing is they have all the ovens and such out in the open for viewing. They werent doing anything while I was there, but from what I was told they have demonstrations. Very lovely little shop. The decor is really beautiful and you can really feel the craftsmanship when you walk into the store. It reminded me of morano glass in Italy. You can see the workspace which is really amazing and you can make your own pint glass. So for a beer lover like myself that is really amazing. The only thing that was lacking was the welcome. The owners or the sales people really don't approach you or greet you when you walk in. When I shop I don't like people breathing down my throat when I'm looking around but I would also appreciate it to be acknowledged when I walked in. read more

The glass creations are very unique with quality work. They have an area where you can learn how to make some of the glass work. I was scared to pick up any of the beautiful pieces because they looked so refined I didn't want to damage any of them. Staff were okay and didn't impose on you and let you peruse on your own which I enjoyed. Upstairs I visited a small gallery of artwork from local artists which was okay. After visiting the store, and downtown area with my fiancée for her wedding veil, I kept this place in mind to get gifts for my groomsmen and it was a great experience from beginning to end. Janet was super helpful to inquire about if ordering custom glass mugs were possible in a tight time frame. Thankfully it was able to be done, and I cannot thank you all enough. The glass mugs looks great and exactly how I imagined. The color of the first initials on the mugs match up to the examples sent to me when initially placing the order by phone. Absolutely exquisite glass studio in the revitalized Main Street of Beacon. I've heard you can watch them create the works on site and they host classes (neither were happening on the day we visited but all the more reason to come back!) Their gallery space was fairly large selling items that ranged from soap dishes, to sushi dishes, jewelry to decorative bowls. Their prices were fair considering the artisan handmade items of art they carry. It's locally made and a perfect way to support Hudson Valley artists. I ended up purchasing a seashell turquoise glass soap dish, with some locally made vegan soap and a miniature bowl that had an octopus outline shaped in to the bottom. Very happy with my purchases! They also had each customer fill out a raffle to win one of their beautiful bowls and I'm crossing my fingers to be a winner :) My in laws also said they've seen their works in galleries up in Cape Cod. Very cool shop in Beacon with plenty of carefully crafted glass pieces (decorative and usable). Prices are somewhat reasonable and what you'd expect, but well worth it if you're looking for an item of this nature. They also feature a small art gallery upstairs (I know, I know.. What Beacon Establishment doesn't right?) With several locally inspired art works (Hudson Valley and NYC scenery). They offer classes available for you to make your own glass art as well (I believe the flyer stated that they were teaching people how to make paper weights). Classes are only offered on certain days so make sure you check ahead of time. We didn't purchase anything on this day but came across a couple of items that we are strongly considering for a recently completed 'built in" living room shelf. This shop caught my eye as we ate across the street. Full of fun beautiful glass, all handmade, it is interesting to browse. There is a wide price range from tiny glass critters to marbles and bigger pieces such as candle holders, dishes, Christmas ornaments and drinking glasses. I love the attention to detail and the craftsmanship that still exists in an age where people order most things from amazon or other big companies that sell mass produced gifts. These items are unique and beautiful. Just be very careful as to not drop or damage the items. I was particularly looking for a glass giraffe but alas could not find any. The glasswork is also present in jewelry displayed in a large glass case. The shop worker did not bother us as we took our time admiring the pieces. The craftsmanship is superb. Originally I intended only to look; however these glass marbles caught my eye. Their sparkle in the light was too much to resist and I ended up with a purchase which came with an entry into a raffle for a large pink glass dish. Due to the nature of craftsmanship, I stood there for quite some time comparing marble sizes and the detailing of each. It is a great souvenir to remember my visit to Beacon. If you are looking for a particular color, just ask. I mentioned at checkout how the colors were limited, and the sales lady checked the inventory in the back. A store like this does not need to advertise; their work speaks for itself. I am sure during the day as the sun shines through the front window, the glasswork becomes a menagerie of color, beckoning customers in. They also host glass blowing demonstrations, but the artist works until 5:30pm. I would definitely try to see the glass being made some other time. What a terrific establishment! Aside from the fact that they offer glassblowing classes and have a working studio on the premises, this place offers premium, high-quality glass objects, ranging from dishes to bowls to vases. Granted, most of it is very expensive, but I did love the large green glass bowl with the octopus on it, and the decorative boxes topped with dragonflies were especially pretty. They also have a lovely selection of ornaments in the back of the shop. Some are Christmas-type bulbs while others have a more general decorative nature. I purchased a lovely lavender bulb for $20, and its delicate contours and colors reminded me very much of the Murano glassware produced with care in Venice. Hudson Beach Glass is a thriving shop in a funky little town that is definitely becoming hipper by the minute. I will more than likely be returning to this low-key haven of artistic ambiance. read more
