The food was outstanding. Get the flan! It cost three dollars, and it was killer good. The service was excellent also.

We were passing through on our way to Destin for family vacation - coming from St. Louis and this was just over halfway and was one of the very few options near our hotel. IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT! This place is truly a hidden gem in an area that it seems to be in the middle of nowhere. Sat immediately. Salsa is cantina style and not chunky - my fave - tastes delicious and chips are served warm. The fish and shrimp in the dishes were perfectly seasoned and cooked - I got shrimp tacos and my husband got arroz con todo and it was truly EVERYTHING as its name indicates. Portion sizes were very generous so we had leftovers for the kiddos on the trip. The kids chicken quesadilla was HUGE and was definitely two meals for our little guy - besides, he was far more interested in their chips and salsa because they were really that good. Sounds silly but for us gringos (haha) the chips and salsa are the social thing that we love about the beginnings of having Mexican fare and we often remember first and foremost how awesome the chips and salsa were; if the salsa was great, if the chips were warm, stale, or over-salted. These were perfect. Service was lovely - I asked her if I could speak to her in Spanish because I need more practice with face-to-face Spanish interactions not simply READING and WRITING Spanish. She was so nice and patient even though I later realized I structured some sentences incorrectly. Haha. She was very sweet to my kids and the food was fast and hot. Gracias para su ayuda y su hospitalidad. The stuffed Poblano pepper was very tasty. The margaritas were a mix but not a sweet mix, they were nice and strong and got the job done after a very long day of traveling. Beautiful restaurant, amazing staff, very attentive waitress, nice big booths, great location, stale/hard chips, rubbery chicken. I left with flushed, tingly cheeks and a very upset stomach. (I have no food allergies). Clearly, something I ate did not agree with me but I don't know if it's the chicken or the guacamole that tastes like it came out of a jar and has the same consistency as baby food. I ultimately came here hoping for a margarita with my food but they do not have a liquor license yet so even though there is alcohol listed on the menu, you can't have any. Also, I should have looked for this before I sat down to eat but the health inspection report r was 85. That could explain the extreme nausea and all the noise my stomach is making. read more

I'm only giving a one because I did like the beef enchilada... 1. I've ordered chili relleno before and it was a whole pepper. This was a little square with watery American cheese tasting sauce. 2. The taco had no tomato or onions on it. Just lettuce, cilantro, beef and shredded queso. 3. Other people on here have complained they charged for water. We got two waters! ( I didn't see the ticket.) YIKES! 4. My husband thought he was ordering a steak fajita, he ordered from talking to the waiter... and got a whole old ribeye.... TOUGH! Could not chew it! We wrapped and taking home to the dog outside. The mixed veggies on his plate were not fresh.. frozen packaged veggies. The rice was the same as other Mexican restaurants. read more

We ordered Lunch Special #1. Taco, Chile Relleno, Beans, Guacamole. We received Chalupa, taco, beef enchilada. It was around 2PM and we were so hungry, we just ate it. When our server asked if everything was alright, we mentioned the menu ;she then brought some melted cheese with a 1-inch square piece of chile and refried beans. Again we showed the server #1 on menu, , & her manager; Then she brought 2 tiny bowlettes of quacamole. Again we spoke with the server and her manager. She then brought a poblano pepper, stuffed with watery cheese and onions. Her manager explained to us that was called a Poblano order; not a chile relleno. And she told us the soupy cheese, with a 1-inch square of a chile was a chili relleno. Our server was very kind and very new. Her manager was kind but did not offer any apology whatsoever. Then when we paid our bill to the manager, she asked if everything was all right. I had to say, "no." And tried to explain. She then explained we had gotten exactly what we ordered. She did not charge for the poblano, but charged 50 Cents each for our two glasses of water. Summary: If you want SW Mexican food or Tex-Mex, this is not your place. And if they bring the wrong thing. Just eat it and enjoy it. They are doing the best they know how. read more

TERRIBLE!! It seems as if the workers have no absolute idea what you're saying . The food was greasy as ever my mom had to use a napkin to soak it up . They never fail to set hot plates down in front of children. My husband had to almost beg to get 3 plates so we could enjoy my mom's birthday cake . Very thrilled by the great service I received. My waitress was very attentive and polite. The chips and salsa were dynamite. Salsa had some kick to it but was very delicious. I ordered the shrimp fajita nachos. It was massive! The flavors were there but halfway through eating it, my chips got soft and mushy due to the plethora of toppings. New location is open in front of Pirates Den on Thorndale Rd, Winfield, AL 35594. Understaffed. Needs a host to seat people or a sign to tell people to please wait. Take that into account when being seated if you are out of town. Good covid spacing. High backed benches separate people when not spaced. Good atmosphere. Got the usual take out. The food is good, but they ripped us off. Save your money and go to Fajita Grill next door. Huatulco charged my family almost 1/3 more than we actually ordered and refused to give us receipts. We've been before, and our bill should not have been as high as it was. We will NEVER be back to this place. We will only go to Fajita Grill from now on. read more

There aren't a lot of options for places to eat in Winfield, but if there were I'd still recommend Huatulco. Stopped here for dinner while our Wayfarer is being serviced. Staff was super nice and efficient. It's classic Tex-Amex. Food was hot, plentiful and good. Two reasons for not going for 5 stars - the place was very cold (tall ceilings, probably hard to heat) and would have liked an option for more spice. The meals were spiced mildly, probably to please locals. We didn't ask for spicier salsa, I assume they have it. Just a suggestion to the owner to maybe have the wait staff offer. This is the definition of a hole in the wall place from the outside, walked in to a dated decor restaurant but very clean. The man at the front desk was very nice and so were the waitresses. Sat us down, ordered and the food came out within 5-7 minutes. Food was great, service was great. Portions were also very good, filled up and didn't get the typical feeling after eating mexican. Best Mexican restaurant I've been to anywhere in Alabama! I had Camarones Rancheros and it was amazingly fresh and tasty!! The owner came and checked on me twice and the waitress was attentive without hovering. The facilities were so clean and comfortable as well. Can't wait to get back to Winfield to eat there again. We are traveling thru this area enroute to Florida. Just went to this place for dinner, and I can truthfully say it is the most disgusting Mexican food we have ever had. First, we are still in the middle of a pandemic, and face masks were NOT required to enter. So NO ONE that came in had one on, except us. The servers did, but even the owner who was at the front area did not. We were seated in an a side room, but near the rest rooms so everyone that walked by us had no mask on. The food...we each ordered #22,,,a chile relleno, one taco, rice and beans. The taco came on a separate plate and it was just beef and cheese. The platter came and at one end was the rice and beans. The other end was this disgusting pile of soupy velveeta cheese. We each looked at each other and said where is the relleno? If you took your fork and pulled it thru the cheese, there was this little sliver of a slice of a pepper. That was the relleno! No stem, no egg batter, no stuffed pepper.....just disgusting.The margaritas were very sweet. I would never recommend this place to anyone. read more

I will give this restaurant 5 stars. Service was quick, staff very friendly. The food was exactly as described on the menu. I'm usually not a fan of shredded chicken, I'd rather have grilled, but this chicken was so tender! I'd usually prefer more veggies in my rice, but this rice is moist and not dry so it was great. I hate to be the only one giving less than 5 stars but, there is always room for improvement so, it takes a lot to get 5 from me! That said, I was looking for Mexican style chicken soup. The (great) Mexican restaurant in Hamilton does not offer it. I called Huatulco and the cook agreed to make a bowl especially for me! Definitely 5 stars for service! I drove 25 minutes to get there and it was worth it. The soup was hot, fresh and tasty. Nice ripe avocado, loaded with chicken, cilantro and veggies. I also got the Oaxaca steak. Probably the best steak I ever got at a Mexican restaurant. Friendly, fast service, not too expensive. Chips were cold and salsa seemed like from a jar, otherwise I would have given 5 stars.
