Natwest in Newcastle is another one of the Natwest branches I've recently in a tally which has…read moreincreased rapidly recently to include the likes of Manchester Spinningfields and Oldham, and now the latest branch I have visited was on my long weekend away in the city centre of Newcastle Upon-Tyne. This branch is a really poor, small branch, it is located on Northumberland Street in Newcastle city centre yet still is an awful branch in terms of overall feel, with the staircase l making the branch feel a little isolated and the poor service. I came into this branch twice now, and on both occasions, I was ignored by the "meet and greet staff" - I wasn't made to feel welcome which was a big shame, hence it showed a big difference between this branch and other Natwest stores such as Manchester city centre. There were some pay-in and cash machines, however, all but one of the inside machines had no paying in facility, which was confusing and frustrating at the same time, and I feel they all should have been paying in and withdrawing cash machines, especially as there was ONE MACHINE in the row of them that only gave out money, and didn't let you put it into your account. Slightly confusing, unwelcoming nature of the branch and the isolated and poor feel, as well as the poor service make this a branch that if I was a member of Natwest and from Newcastle, I would even consider leaving. This branch deserves one star because of this, which is a shame to do considering I'm first to review this place on Yelp, with the last review being on Qype and merged into Yelp, nearly 9 years ago

Natwest has got good branch network in newcastle. Generally, its financial products are quite good…read moreand competitive. its current account is crap though as it only gives you 0.1% interest (which is nearly zero). its ISA saving account recently launched is excellent, although the rate drops straight away when Bank of England announced the 1.5% rate cut. However, its ISA saving account rate is still the best in the market. The proper branch is only in Newcastle City centre though. The one in Gosforth has only one till everytime I go there, which will definitely always have long queues. The customer service is also alright. It's not difficult to see one of its customer advisers as its receptionist is not awkward like the one in Abbey & HSBC.

If you're looking for a bank with good customer service, don't choose this one! I have been with…read morethe Halifax for about 8 years now and it seems to me that things have gone form bad to worse there. My husband wants to claim back some insanely unfair bank charges from this bank but we know of a few people who have tried to do this and have had their accounts closed (although this is not in fact legal!) I have never had any bank charges myself, but the problem I am facing with this company is their appalling customer service. The bank have now changed my debit card without any notice twice (to an inferior card each time) and now I cannot even buy groceries online without using a credit card, as even a company as large as Tesco will not accept my crappy debit card. When I asked if I could have my old debit card back, I was told that they would have to cancel my account altogether and then I could apply for a new account, which they may or may not approve. When I went into the branch last week I was told that, although all of the bank tellers were free to serve me, I had to use the telephone to cancel a direct debit because my account no longer allowed me the privilege of teller service. When I asked why my debit card (and apparently my entire account) seemed to have been downgraded, I was told that perhaps I did not use that account enough - my last bank statement was 7 pages long! I use this account for numerous direct debits, standing orders and it is attached to my very well used Paypal account. When my husband and I tried to put £1000 in cash into his account we were told that the teller couldn't accept it and we had to place one note at a time into the automated deposit machine. Am I the only person who does not want to make long phone calls and go through huge automated menus when three tellers are sitting idle? I know it's old fashioned of me, but I would rather have some human interaction in my banking transactions than have to deal with time consuming automation. I think it is very sad that a company with such incredible profits cannot manage to offer even the most basic of services to longstanding customers. I have a number of accounts with other financial institutions and I have never been treated this poorly by any of them. I think the time has come for me to say goodbye to the Halifax, I certainly shan't miss them. In England we seem to put up with appalling treatment from banks who seem to forget that they only have a business at all because of their customers money. Perhaps it's time more people voted with their feet and refused to put up with poor treatment from the institutions we lend our hard-earned wages to! The building is all on one level but access is a problem because of the very busy bus stops outside the main doors. You will not, in all probability be able to get teller service so just use a machine instead, there are plenty of cashpoints on Northumberland Street and many other parts of the city.
