I mean, an adult ticket for $11? How much is one of the bigger chains? I don't think concession tickets are that cheap! The movies tend to be a little bit older, as in they're not the newest blockbuster released. They're new-ish, so if you can wait to see a movie, this place is a great option. Apart from that, the rest of the experience is pretty similar to other cinemas. The service is good, with the staff being friendly (it has to be, given the number of seniors that go). It is hard to find if you're not sure exactly where it is. If you drive down the street that goes from Blackburn road at the traffic lights, you'll find it on the outside corner of the right hand turn. I know this sounds like pretty random directions, but you'll find it knowing this information.

The thing with the Palace Cinema groups is that they tend to have a pretty decent range of movies, that sort of drift between the mainstream and the independent. The reason I came here was simply to check out a cinema that I hadn't yet visited, and it was quite nice. You get more of a feel of an old fashioned cinema than those modern multiplexes. However, they have given the cinema a bit of a makeover meaning that there are a few more screens that there was originally.

Anyway back to the cinema.....it's a lovely restored art deco building. The velour seats are plush and comfy, the cafe serves hot drinks, alcohol and scrumptious cakes including panetone. Another plus is that the international film festivals are all shown here - Italian, French, British, Israeli, German. If you love films, become a Palace member & you'll be able to experience the films shown here at a discount as well as attending advance screenings and special events.

The building's design is slightly outdated but doesn't stop the mounds of people within it. When you enter, the walls on either side colorfully display the numbers 1-10 in a show reel font. There is occasionally a stall along this walkway offering some sort of activity for children. The only reasons you would enter this building is to watch a movie, eat, go to the pokies or use the atm machine. The center space is very large which is necessary as it does get thoroughly packed on Friday-Sunday nights. The second level of this building is devoted to village cinemas.

What I love about this place is the options for food, drink, coffee, etc before and after the movie. With the nearby restaurants and cafes, you can catch up with friends, even on a weeknight, which can be hard at other cinema venues. The cinemas themselves are okay. Slightly dated, but the theaters are big, lots of seats, and ample leg room. The screens are big, and the sound is great. I have never left thinking anything negative about the cinemas (only some of the movies I'm forced to see by my husband!).

I have to say though that, if I had to choose between Hoyts in say Vic Gardens and this one, then whichever one was closest to me at the time would win the battle. The Gold Class suite however is a different ball game. We had free tickets and went to see Captain America there and loved it. Everyone says and knows that Gold Class tickets are pricey but you know what? The service that you get and comfort that you experience makes it worth it. There is a bar, where you can hang out for drinks and they also have a seating area for you to wait when you get there. You are assigned a waitress who takes your order and you can pick the time for them to bring your food/drink to you. The seats are recliner ones and sooo comfy. You have a small storage area where you can store your bag or anything else you want out of the way when you're in there. The aisles are very spacious and I really like the layout and how they only have four seats in the middle so they don't disturb you when they bring out orders. There are a couple of staff who hang out at the back and you have a button on your tray table next to your seat so you can call them up if you need anything. Until I've experienced Hoyts's La Premiere, Village's Gold Class has the thumbs up for the time being for me!

Yes it is featured in the Village Ads that play in the cinemas all over the country but that is not the point! As a result of all the advertising and the crowds that are always converging on Doncaster Shopping Centre, the cinemas are always extremely crowded. The lines for tickets can get so long that you can literally watch as the movie you want to see gets sold out before you reach the counter. At least it also gives you plenty of time to choose another but it is still frustrating and has happened to me twice. The candy bar lines can also be ridiculously long, even when the maximum number of staff are serving. Add to that the fact that most cinemas get filled right to the front and it is enough to turn me off going there on busy friday and saturday nights. The staff are friendly and courteous, the cinemas tend to be well maintained and clean and the screens don't have too many problems. So apart from the crowds the cinemas themselves are pretty nice. Unfortunately Doncaster - the crowded nature of your venue is a deal breaker for me. Adios.

However this cinemas has a very large number if movies on show each time than others, so those movies that don't seem to be showing at other theaters will most likely be on show here. And it was total chaos when we were there - both ice machines were out of ice and it was hard to find anyone to help (and it was 35 outside). Lines were long to pay. Popcorn is boxed up in advance so you're not getting fresh stuff. Sweet only comes in one size, there's no option to mix sweet & salty, and no butter. The theatre seems new and the "Xtreme Screen" was big with excellent sound. The seats are very wide and recline with controls similar to an airplane seat. The bathrooms are far too small for a theatre of this size.

Unfortunately I have to say that the Palace Westgarth does not always show movies to warrant people from all over Melbourne knowing it's presence. Don't get me wrong the Palace Westgarth does show many great movies and has a number of great film festivals throughout the year - including the Spanish and French ones of most note. It has the Friday night film vault where they show old school movies usually of the horror or other cult genres at the stoke of midnight. However, most of the time I personally feel that they don't show a great selection of films. They don't show many blockbusters, which is fine, but they also don't show that many independent films either. In fact it seems to me that a large component of their catalogue includes kids movies, second rate British romantic comedies and cheap Hollywood films. All this means is that I find I never end up going all that often to a cinema which I desperately want to support.
