Only thing I would have done differently would have been to add the garlic yogurt all over the bowl instead of to the side. Every time I walk around the North Market and think about what to eat, Hoyo's somehow ends up being chosen. But could you blame me? Literally everything I've tried on their menu is delicious! My favorite is the beef suqaar. The beef is always so tender and flavorful, it's a no-brainer. I also love that their food actually has a decent level of heat to it, unlike many other establishments serving up a disappointingly bland "hot". If you can handle at least a medium level of spice, I highly recommend their spicy rice as the base! You can always ask for half non-spicy and half spicy rice too. Their hot veggies are also full of flavor and cooked to perfection. You cannot go wrong with any, but my go-to are the chickpeas and spinach. All in all, Hoyo's Kitchen is super delicious and totally worth it even if the price seems a bit high for a typical "build your own"-style establishment. A Somalian stall tucked away in a food hall, Hoyo's was a standout find among many great food options (Moroccan, Vietnamese, Nepalese, bagels, delicious ice cream, etc). I was in Columbus for a conference, staying at the Hilton, and the food market was only a 6 min walk away from the hotel. The food at Hoyos is served Chipotle-style in that you get to choose your protein and toppings and build your own meal. The staff was just as friendly as mentioned in other reviews, and there was plenty of seating on the second level. I had the bowl with half and half Somali rice and spicy rice, half goat and half mango chicken, all of which were delicious and flavorful, but the chicken was my favorite: slightly sweet with a kick of spicy heat that enhanced rather than overpowered the other flavors. The spicy rice was also nicely spicy but not in the way that leaves your mouth hurting. I slightly preferred the yellow Somali rice. For sides, I got half spinach, cabbage, and lentils which were all so flavorful and refreshingly, not overcooked. I have been extremely excited to try this restaurant out because people rave about it. Sadly, this was not my experience. I selected the goat, spinach and chickpea bowl. I was impressed by the chunks of goat he had placed in the bowl. When I started eating my meal, I realized that the chunks of goat were chunks of bone, cartilage and fat with barely any meat. I stopped back down and politely let them know. Without asking, they grabbed the bowl and threw more chunks of bone in the dish. When they handed it back to me, he made the snide comment that "goat has bones." How about making it right without the commentary? I understand goat has bones but when you are charging a premium for an entree, serve quality over quantity. I ordered goat meat, not goat bones and grizzle. The rest of the meal was average and I regret having not made a better choice given all of the options at the North Market. One and done. read more

Everything was delicious and unique! White sauce on the side was amazing. Although goat was fairly grisly, the parts that had meat were tender and flavorful. Mango chicken was moist and flavorful. Both spicy rice and regular rice were cooked perfectly. Injera bread was unique. Chicken Sambusa had a slightly funny flavor to it but good once you get used to it. The beef sambusa was amazing and the veggie was just veggies in a crust and not much to write home to mom about. The lentils and chickpeas were flavorful and added a nice texture to the plate. Holy WOW this is my new favorite spot at the North Market! Everything is SO delicious!! I got a vegetarian bowl that included a base (I chose the Somali basmati rice, which was vegan), all four veggie options (only 2 if you are eating a protein as well) and unlimited fresh toppings as well as your choice of three sauces! The portion was huge, and was definitely enough for two extremely filling meals. All of the veggie options were delicious, but my favorites would be the lentils and cabbage. No item was bland or over/under cooked, everything was separately seasoned and full of flavor. The mango habanero sauce I topped my bowl off with is definitely spicy! It's delicious but would definitely recommend eating it in moderation. I also got a veggie Sambusa which was full of mixed veggies, fried to perfection and had a slight kick to it as well. My friend got the mango chicken, which isn't listed on the protein menu but is supposed to be their hottest selling item. This place is a MUST stop at when you go north market. Hands down has become my favorite place and the people who work there are awesome. I have been so many times they remember my dad and I every time we come, which makes it even better :') The price for how much you get can't be beat. $11 for this whole bowl?! Over the weekend at the food drive, Hoyo's catered their food to feed the neighborhood. They gave out a couple hundred meals for those in need. Big respect to them! I couldn't resist stopping to chat when I saw them at the market. I've always wandered past them but today I stopped for a sambusa! I have never heard or seen one before and it reminded me of an empanada. I got chicken but they have beef and vegetarian/vegan option. We were visiting Columbus and were pleasantly surprised to see a decent amount of African cuisine options so we could try something new/different compared to the usual fare we get when eating out. We found Hoyo's on Yelp and saw it was in North Market Downtown, a public market, which we love since it allows you to try a bunch of different foods. Hoyo's was fantastic - we had the bowl with the spicy rice, beef suqaar, spinach, and chick pea along with all the toppings (spinach, tomatoes, onion, etc). We also asked for all 3 sauces on side. Bowl was a decent portion size with good ratios of meat to veggie/carbs. All the individual components of the bowl were deliciously seasoned and spiced - making a tasty bite when all put together. The beef was tender. Rice and vegetables were cooked perfectly. The yogurt sauce added a nice tangy, creaminess. The other 2 sauces added some additional heat. It's been over four years since fasting Hoyo's, that first encounter being in there Commercial Square/Northland location. Needless to say, that experience was absolutely priceless and has managed to leave me wanting more of their phenomenal food I remembered from long ago. So, naturally, when I saw they were going to open a stall in North Market - much closer in miles to me - I was ecstatic!! This second location is different from their main hub, as this is fast-casual customizable bowls; the popular rice/sandwich/salad base concept, you pick the protein and toppings, and pay at the end. I love veggies, wanted ALL of theirs, so I went with a salad bowl with a small scoop of their rice mixed in for taste. Goat was my protein (be aware, there are some small bones they miss), and I topped it with all four of the veggie options (they're $1 for every one over two). Fresh cucumber added at the end, and a few containers of their white sauce, all to go. The dish was awesome! Full of flavor and spices (not spicy, though). The goat meat was very tender and I loved the spiced sauce it marinades in. It's not burn your mouth spicy, just gave the dish a great flavor profile. Tender steamed veggies. The white dressing was super good. Coriander? Cardamum? I will admit I don't know my herbs and spices well at all, but whatever is mixed in the light dressing was fantastic! Portion sizes are pretty big, so I definitely got my $15 worth. Hoyo's has for sure earned their spot in the Market, and I'm elated I can get their food easier, and any day of the week! read more

One of my favorite restaurants in Columbus! This place is the greatest. I've been here a bunch of times but just getting around to reviewing it. Hoyo's is located in the North Market (which is a cool place to visit in itself). Parking is very easy as there is a dedicated lot for the north market to get validated. The line moves really fast as it is a "build your own bowl" type of model. The mango chicken is absolutely incredible- honestly, all of their offerings are really flavorful. Wow. Just stellar experience here and all from a very tiny stall at North Market. For just under $14 you can get a a Chipotle-style legit Somali/Ethiopian food experience and a choice of three stellar drinks. The tamarind juice is marvelous and has a great measurable but not overwhelming bitterness. The mango juice is thick and not artificially flavored. The ginger lemonade is absolutely amazing and genuine- you must try all three even if your pancreas is shot! You choose your base- sabayad wrap not yet available but injera (delicious fermented teff spongy bread) and rice are available, then choose your protein (goat, chicken, spicy or not). Then you can add some cold veggies and sauces. The chicken is tender and I got the less spicy version. The injera is legit and good luck finding elsewhere close by. The nice young woman who served me answered my ignorant questions with great personability even though I'm sure she is asked "what is suqaar?" fifteen times daily. Just a great place to eat genuine exotic food in Cbus in a really accessible way and place for newbies and foodies alike. read more

I've been a huge fan of Hoyo's Kitchen's Northland location for a number of years now, where they make some of the best food to be found in the city. So it's a real pleasure to see them at the North Market. The stall is pretty sleek and modern, and they have nice new branding - an African-inspired graphic logo and eye-catching orange shirts. But at its heart Hoyo's is a family operation (Hoyo is Somali for "mother", so "Mother's Kitchen"), and the food tastes like it should - simple, hearty, but rich with flavor and cooked with love. And indeed, I saw many familiar faces from the Northland location. My favorite offering is the goat, which is tender and just the right amount of spicy. Warning for the culinarily meek, it's bone-in. They have solid offerings if you're vegetarian, as well - the lentils and chickpeas are both filling and flavorful, particularly on a nice bed of rice, and both the spinach and cabbage options are tasty. Don't forget to get some of their housemade hot sauce on top of everything. I didn't notice their drink options until after I had already paid, but the pineapple lemonade looked pretty appealing, particularly on a hot summer's day.
