I've been attending Howey Acting Studio for almost a year now, and I am so happy I found it. If you want to be a working actor and receive feedback that will help you improve, this is the right place for you. I feel like I learned so much about acting, but also about myself. Very little learning by actually being on stage. Each class is three hours. The MOST stage time you will get is 10 minutes. The rest of the time is spent listening to outdated stories and watching others. The teacher is very knowledgeable but emotionally unintelligent. Talks about herself for at least 90 minutes per class. Waste of time. Find another school. . read more

I signed up with the expectation of receiving training by a professional to improve my acting skills. The class started off with me attempting to do a comedic monologue, which was immediately interrupted by the "instructor" Carla, who , rather than giving me instructional advice to help me, instead launched into one of her very many narcissistic twenty plus minute conversations about how she knew George Clooney. Turns out she interrupts classes and students in the middle of their work a lot doing this, she enjoys bragging about herself often, because it is she, and not acting, which is her favorite subject. By the time she got done blathering on about herself and got back to my monologue, I'd lost my concentration. Others performing monologues were told no more than "put more emotion into it" over and over, with no further detailed information whatsoever telling how something should be done more effectively. On break I overheard a classmate ask Carla the instructor about her acting experience. She told the student she had no experience acting in front of the camera, nor on stage. No formal training, and no experience herself auditioning. I'm sorry, this person is teaching an acting class with no experience acting? How does one teach others what they themselves have not done? I saw student after student depart from the class three hours later no better then when they started, with no substantive information provided to them to do so. No one grew or did anything any differently then when they first came in. It was the current instructor Carla's husband, Bill, who once taught the lessons years earlier at this acting studio before he died. He, it would appear, knew his stuff and had acting experience and developed his students skill sets. She possesses none of his training nor acting background. Do not waste your time and money here. She will be more then happy to waste both for you and you will leave no better then when you came. I ask again, how is this person teaching acting classes, when by her own admission, she has no experience acting herself? She literally can not act herself out of a paper bag, let alone teach anyone else to master this skill. Find another acting school, and before you sign up, have their instructor give you a full snapshot of their own training and hands on acting experience. read more

From the moment you meet Bill and Carla, you are treated as family. Bill pays close attention to all elements of the activities/skits, so he can not only engage constructive conversation with the actor but also guide your own thinking. He doesn't just tell you how to improve based on the performance, but asks questions; challenging your honest viewpoint. He teaches with the goal for the actor to hone their skills and bring the character into correlation with your own personality, so you become comfortable with being the character. When I met Bill Howey about a year and a half ago for a "working audit" (where you meet with just him, do a monologue, get feedback and ask any questions), I decided pretty quickly that he was the acting coach I wanted. I have not been disappointed. His teaching style is different than any other I have experienced. The scene you do becomes about the work you have done outside of class as well as who you are as a person. He emphasizes using your own qualities and idiosyncrasies in your work. He makes you think outside the box, try new things, make new choices, and expand your views. He has helped me to see that sometimes the obvious choice is the less interesting choice and to think from a new perspective. From the moment I walked into Bill's class I was instantly hooked. But I'll be honest that I was scared to take this class. Yep even an actor can be scared to act. I have a big personality and in my early days with Bill found myself pushing to much. Each week in class I would be challenged,push and supported. Bill helped me to stop acting and just be! Be still,be myself and be captivating. So for me less is more and more powerful. Bill and Carla together have helped me become a more confident actor.
