This is a roadside motel kind of area. I was driving as far as I could and ended up with a room here and was surprised to get a warm and professional greeting by not one but two paid staff at 11:00 PM. The hotel is basic, but the room I got was in splendid shape, was spotless, and miraculously had maybe the first time I've ever seen the AC work too well. I had to turn the temperature up a bit despite the muggy South Carolina conditions. I've got a cheap SC hotel horror story and I'm sure there are many others, and while this place was not as cheap as the context suggested, it was worth the stop for me. read more

Clean, simple, quiet! It is conveniently right off the main road but set far back enough to be very quiet. We have stayed here several times and have always been impressed by the efficient and pleasant welcome. There is coffee ready early, although the breakfast itself is quite modest. If you are looking for an easy no frills place to comfortably lay your head, this is a good choice. Love the groovy 1960s HoJo colour palette as well. read more

I travel for a living & stay in a lot of 2-3 star hotels. Very seldom stay at a HJ. Needless to say, it was my last choice of hotels at this exit (other hotels had TERRIBLE reviews). So, I chose HJ & was glad I did. My room was clean & furnished nicely. It was fresh looking .... not the typical bland room that I'm accustomed to. My ONLY negative ... Customer service. There is a "gentleman" used loosely, who is very abrasive. I understand his point, to a point. Here's what happened. We were traveling for work & had 2 Government tagged tractor trailers. We were already booked at the Hampton across the street but they had no reasonable parking for the trucks. Howard Johnson's Has a three or four section parking lot which is massive considering the sides of their motel. There were literally three vehicles parked up by the hotel. We parked well out of the way in one of their parking lots, not knowing we were going to be approached rather abrasively by this person and told we could not park there unless we had a room booked at their hotel and had a parking pass. He said the trucks would be towed and it would cost thousands of dollars to get them out. I don't think he understood they were federal vehicles and he would probably go to jail if he did that but still the same. We managed to move them and find a place on Hampton's property. If he offered an option of us, perhaps paying for a parking pass, we would've done that since it was much easier to park there, and given the fact that the very next morning there were still only three vehicles in that massive parking lot. With this, I wouldn't recommend Howard Johnson's to anybody for anything and after reading the reviews already for this location I doubt there's much chance they will have much business anyway. read more

Second time staying here. An older building, but perfectly fine for a stop during travels. The breakfast is good and seating area comfortable. There is just hard boiled eggs, but more of other things. What is striking here is the staff, which makes all the difference. From a pleasant late check-in by Kia to an equality pleasant early checkout by Amanda. Byron was quick to replenish breakfast items or cleaning tables in between, along with helping with breakfast machine instructions (he noticed I needed assistance). Francis R. who was just waiting in the breakfast area apparently for her shift to start, gave her valuable grits making advice without asking. Another worker, Retha, also helped us outside without asking. There is lots of lodging options nearby, but it is the consciousness work of these nice staff members that makes us comfortable and happy to return here! read more

For under $100, Ive been here two times in past 5 days. You are greeted with air set to 72 in room (nice) clean and updated. The staff around 11pm is friendly. The parking lot is well lit. 2 soaps and shampoo. Tub has a no slip matt. Bed neatly made with an abundance of pillows. TV, cable and small refrigerator. Breakfast is just enough and has an assortment. Plenty of hot coffee. From parking lot, to checkin and to room you can't help take notice that they are serious about making you feel at home. read more

We stopped here after 10pm while traveling, and the staff was very courteous. The room was clean, quiet, and very affordable for 2 queen beds ($80 after taxes). We got everything we needed, and the morning staff was just as nice as the night shift. read more

Was on a road trip from Atlanta to visit family. The last leg of my trip was in Florence, SC. Booked my room on bokking.com. They had the best room rate at the time of my booking. Which was $75 for the night. I checked in at about 7pm on Saturday no wait. Room was clean and right where I asked the front desk staff. Hung out with my family had a good time and checked out the next day no problems. I would recommend this place again. read more

This should be called the crime scene hotel, The door had damage like it was broken into and smears all over it, like a mechanic who works on your car and Leaves grease all over your steering wheel , the dark red stains could be blood.., The plastic holding the threshold of the door down Was disconnected in the middle creating a major trip hazard. The bathtub had black mold on the grout along the edges . My wife did not want to stay at the first room we were given because of the smoke smell, I did not notice. I stayed in here because it was called a Howard Johnsons, which normally would have a Howard Johnsons diner, NOT , please rename the place to CSI Florence. read more

Stayed in room 1215 on 11/16/2021.  Check in (no reservation) was fast but not particularly friendly. SC is apparently only allowing hotel stays to truckers and interstate travelers. The room was gorgeous and the bubble mirror totally my style. The room had a fridge, microwave and coffee and the beds were very comfortable. Some Yelpers are just snobs. This place is above and beyond for $80 a night! I usually stay in $150-$200 hotels and while this hotel lacks many amenities by comparison, it was perfectly clean for a one night stay. Seems newly renovated. Clean rooms. No weird smells. The surrounding area is a bit sketchy, but the parking lot is well lit. I was approached by beggars three times between picking up food and getting gas. The restaurant staff had to run one of them off. Lots of loitering and meandering pedestrians. To the poster that said the lamps had "blood stains" on them; it's rust. The lamps have some rust on them. So what? It's the south, it's humid, metal gets rusty. Also, there is no black mold in the bathrooms. I saw some gaps in the silicone caulking that could be mistaken for black mold. No bed bugs either. I flipped the whole mattress over and went searching through all the cracks and crevices. They have a 8.8 rating online for a reason! Would stay here again! read more

All I want is a clean place to sleep and take a shower. This place delivers on that at a reasonable price. It has a strong Wi-Fi signal, which is always good. My only complaint is that it is a bit noisy; the walls are a bit thin and it is near the train tracks. read more

2 stars and this is why. I was somewhere between 3&4 stars because first you have to get past The exterior of the place.! It's scary and looks abandoned. There is chaiinl Fence in the parkinglot, and it would appear portions of the building has been destroyed. I went off the reviews on Hotels.com and booked anyway. The room is clean and spacious. Well appointed and the tv has lots of channels. Since this has been newly renovated there was no musty smells. As seen in the pics posted the colors are bright and cheery. They have provided basic toiletries. The room does have an ironing board, and closet/ storages space for hanging clothes. There are plenty of . The reasoning for 2 stars instead of 3 In what world should a hotel/motel only served breakfast til 930? Like really? The common areas could use a little TLC. A fresh coat of paint would definitely add some curb appeal. With so many obviously more appealing options why not stand out from the rest in some way? We would not stay again. 2 hours before checkout housekeeping was banging on doors. When I opened the door and asked her when check out was she said 11. I asked her the time...she said after 10. So why are you banging on doors? I called the front desk and asked why? The young lady that answered the phone was very apologetic. When I checked out the same young lady from the phone was again very apologetic. I asked to speak to the manager and she couldn't have cared any less. The staff is friendly and courteous...very very happy to be making me sleep and wake, happy. Denitra last night at 10p.m. was really exceptional on check in...Joenitra was attentive and quick keeping the waffles, eggs, and sausage, along with coffee and fresh juices (more stuff at this full, fresh, continental breakfast, but these are the things I ate and drank.) Customer Service means a LOT to Me and Mine. ...oh, yeah, the room and king bed are large, the bathroom...huge and clean, and all well appointed with adequate seating and wall sockets for port charging. Easy in and out off i95. My only personal criticism...the room and bathroom trash cans are too tiny for my taste. All in All, wonderful stay. The hotel looks kinda abandoned but our room was partially renovated (nice bathroom and sink area) basic amenities, the part under the sink was dirty and dusty and it's obvious they half clean the rooms, honestly all would've been fine for a quick stop as we drove the east coast and just needed some sleep except their was a freaking ROACH in the bathroom late at night. I woke up my husband screaming to kill it and we got our kids up immediately and left in the middle of the night. Now I'm all skeeved out. I think many of the negative reviews are from 5+ years ago before the maJor renovation. Surprised by the cleanliness, quietness, friendliness and updates. Honestly, we only booked this hotel as a one night stay bc we were driving back from Florida to NY, this was a last minute book a couple of days in advanced and I thought, oh crap, not many hotels left with a decent price and good reviews. Bc it was $84 a night I was kind of really worried it would be a crap hole, I can't remember the last time I stayed in hotel under $150, I'm very paranoid about bed bugs and safety and cleanliness so I usually shell out the extra money for guaranteed comfort, hotels on the way down cost is about $270 a night, this $84 book is A GEM. Perfect for the tired cross coast driver on I-95. Newly renovated and very clean! New bathrooms, beautifully done rooms that echo back to hojos mid century American kitsch with the teal, white and orange colors. Surfaces that aren't upholstered and can be wiped clean like vinyl headboard and bench. Don't judge it by it's dated outside, the inside is great. Guy in lobby was wonderful. Parking runs around the perimeter so you can see your car from your window and its steps away. Cracker Barrel, gas stations, fast food restaurants right next door, quick hop back onto the I-95. I do a lot of traveling and I would say this is THE perfect overnight stop hotel with unbelievably fair price. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! This place is awful! It is in a nice area with nicer hotels around it, yet it still ends up being shady and almost scary to walk around outside. We had to find a hotel that allowed dogs, so I'm sure we were put in the worst set of rooms due to pets. However, we we t through 3 keys before we got one that worked on our door. Then, when the lock opened, the door was stuck and we had to kick it open. We get inside, and the lights by the bed didn't work. One just wouldn't turn on and the other didn't even have a bulb in it. Switched bulbs around and we got one of them working eventually. They have us cups, tea bags and coffee..... There's no coffee maker in the room. I lost my head and stepped on the carpet barefoot... It was sticky! Yuck! The bed itself wasn't too bad, but the pillows are uncomfortable squares that I couldn't use to sleep (luckily we brought our own. The tub was also lately disgusting! My hopes for a nice hot shower were dashed! I'm writing all this, and we have only been on our room for half an hour. I will NEVER stay here again. If you need a hotel that allows pets, keep looking. The hotel is partially under renovation but our stay was not affected by any noice or inconvenience. New rooms are really nice, clean and spacious. Everything is brand new and updated. So just I contacted Wyndham first behind the whole COVID-19 issue and to ensure that I would be safe to see my two (2) newborn grandsons. Their response was 'their hotels are "individually" owned', so could not speak to the hotels cleaning process. WHAT??? So...I contacted the hotel...The young gentleman that answered told me 'the rooms are cleaned every day'. Got that but...not what I asked...How are they cleaned? Response: 'They are vacuumed, and things are wiped down'. Me: "Wiped down with what?" Clerk: 'We have hand sanitizer at the front desk.' SERIOUSLY!!! I then asked if there was a manager on duty in the a.m. Clerk: 'Yes, there is a manager on duty in the morning.' I then thanked him and hung up. Now, because this is what I expected, I've already started packing and have Clorox Wipes, Lysol and gloves. The fact that Wyndham and Howard Johnson, individually owned or not, needs to take responsibility. WTH! read more

I understand they are remodeling but the rooms heater barely kept the chill out and the thin blankets and a half inch gap at the door with no weatherstripping letting in the below freezing air didn't help. Rooms can be cleaned better without someone's hair sticking on a door and bathroom floor. During morning breakfast the restroom needed paper towels and was told they had to wait until the cleaning person come in to fill it. THIRTY (30) MINUTES! So everyone in the breakfast room that uses the bathroom are Without paper towels to clean/ dry their hands!! Room was clean. Big dirt stain on a bed cover. Torn piece of carpet edge at bathroom. Stepped on exposed carpet edge strip nails. Hope I don't get tetanus. Needs to be taken care of. The remodel is done really well. It felt very modern then most hotels. Just that orange was a weird color for a hotel room. The bathroom was very small, the blow dryer was really nice quality. Overall great experience. read more
