As a minister and as a Disabled veteran I have had numerous opportunities to interface with the national cemetery staff and honor guards. They take their commitment to veterans seriously, and treat all family and mourners with great dignity. The grounds are well maintained and I have arrange my pre-need with them. My family can not thank the Houson National Cemetery enough for the outstanding ceremony they gave our father on July 16th, 2024. We had absolutely no idea what to expect as our grief was so tremendous but the Houston National Cemetery and the U.S. Coast Guard gave our father a first-class ceremony. The entire staff at the Houston National Cemetery are professional, knowledgeable, respectful, curtious, and extremely kind-hearted. We just visited the niche where our father's urn and our mother's urn are resting in forever peace. The niche is absolutely beautiful with exceptional craftmanship. A very sacred place and where my dad is interned. The grounds are pristine and immaculate. Layout is very easy to navigate and there is an electronic locator to locate grave sites. Knowing my dad is not alone and here with his fallen brothers and sisters gives me comfort. I am not familiar with all of the commerative events the cemetary honors the fallen here but I did have a chance to the wreaths for Christmas. Very beautiful site to see bringing me to tears. I highly recommend taking some time out to visit even if you don't have a loved one here. read more

WTH!!! I was so disappointed with the service/ Non received today. We were taken to the exact lot to lower the casket into the ground, to watch them. No military, Taps, no flag present or over head cover. Bad enough a 21 gun salute is no longer being used and taps being faked/played. That's a sad Honor for a Soldier that voluntarily gave his life to protect this Divided country. So disappointed with that VA and the Country. read more

it is not a beautiful cemetery right now.i was there today visiting my husband. This is the 3rd visit in the past 3 weeks and the grass is not cut, weeds growing between the headstones. Flowers were to be picked up on the 9th, there are dead flowers all throughout the grounds.. I was told today they do not have a contract and it is the end of the physical year. I don't understand how you can let a contract expire or not have one lined up if you are not going to renew the existing one. The men and women buried here fought and died for our country, or died from complications due to what they were exposed to fighting for our country. Some have died from accidents or natural causes but they all deserve the highest of high respect and the condition of the grounds is not acceptable. Who can help fix this problem? read more

This federally sponsored national cemetery is home for many military veterans as their final resting place. Some died in peace, some died in combat. However they all wore the uniform and took the Oath to defend our country. On Memorial Day each year, there is a US flag on every grave. It is so touching to see all of the people come here on that day to pay their respects to a relative or friend. I recommend visiting this cemetery on that day if only for a few minutes. It will cause you to reflect about those resting here, the people who come to pay tribute to them and your own life and mortality. This is sacred ground. read more

Houston National Cemetery is different. I was expecting to see the perfectly aligned white markers; and I did. But, I also saw lots of open green space with randomly placed bouquets or flags. I think this is the first national cemetery I've visited that had nearly as many in-ground markers as above-ground markers. It was a sight that made it harder to visualize the enormity of what it represents. There's a strange symmetry about the mix of white markers and the slightly-below ground flat stones. A unique feature here is the hemicycle memorial with the carillon and chapel. Houston is one of only a very few national cemeteries that has it. As I walked around the grounds, I heard the patriotic music from the carillon echoing around the area. The hemicycle and the small rotunda hold the Veterans and Memorial Day ceremonies. It's a peaceful location. The one disappointment in this place of memorial is the empty bottles and cans and fast food bags littering the parking lot, under the trees, and near the edge of the cemetery stones. I found it disrespectful in a place that should be honoring those buried here. read more

I've been here many times now. It is a beautiful cemetery that is well maintained. If you are a veteran then you and your spouse can be buried here. My grandparents were buried here many years ago and now my step mom most recently. One thing I noticed about this visit was how organized the processions are to the pavilion where the family has the service. It is quick because by this time we've already had the funeral services. This is a quick burial service at the pavilion before the body is buried. If you are a veteran i hear this a good deal to get buried here. It's a beautiful spot and meticulously maintained. It is definitely a site to see the headstones lined up perfectly and orderly. I wouldn't expect anything less from the veterans. read more

There is no place so beautiful where one reflect and appreciate the sacrifice there brave souls did for us. Such a peaceful place to pay tribute to our brave soldiers that once had their life on the line or that sacrificed their life for our country. I love coming here and see how nicely maintained, cleaned and decorated. My kids love coming here to find some peace and yet have pride of their paternal grandfather, it is a great joy that they get even if they never had the chance to meet him. My Sweet brothers earthly body rests here. He had a heart of Gold and I miss him so much. He received the Purple Heart for combat in Vietnam. He loved his family and animals. He was a Shierffs Deputy for 27 years too. He had a beautiful service and full Military Honors & Shierffs Department honors. He is in Heaven with all the family & Jesus. We all miss him every day. I attended a military service yesterday for my uncle. The grounds are well kept and there are an abundance of grown trees throughout the cementary. This was my first military funeral to attend and it was beautiful. I didn't know what to expect except what I have seen on tv and it surpassed everything I could've imagined. It was truly perfect. You could tell that everyone that played a part in the service truly cares about veterans and the service they provided for their country and their fellow Americans. Many services go on each day and you can tell the staff are very organized. Everyone was friendly and compassionate. I highly recommend Houston National Cemetery. read more

God bless America: home of the free, because of the brave. This is a well-maintained and beautiful final resting place for our veterans. My cousin, though she did not serve in the armed forces, was the wife of an Air Force vet and was eligible to be buried here. She was a fighter in her own respect. She waited 7 months for a heart and liver that never came and fought the battle as best she could. I was overwhelmed with emotion visiting her here; it was only a year ago that I was sitting beside her in the hospital, spending as much time as I could with her since I was visiting from Singapore and couldn't be there all the time. My aunt and uncle visit her regularly, so I always see photos of the cemetery on various occasions. December is a special time to visit since everyone gets a wreath thanks to Wreaths Across America. I want to provide a realistic account of what a service at this cemetery is really like. My dad was a retired army colonel buried here. Contrary to what one might expect, it's not a grave side service. Very brief services are held at various pavilions throughout the Cemetery. After the short memorial service, the coffin is loaded into a maintenance type vehicle and speeds off. The family is told they can't go to the gravesite until the late afternoon. Well, we tracked down the gravesite and found a mass grave. The workers had already put my dad in the ground and my brother is sure they just threw my dad in the ground unceremoniously. I walked to the open grave and saw some kind of plastic looking board thrown carelessly over the coffin. I didn't know what that was about. It was clear they would be throwing in body after body in the long pit for the the next few hours and that's why they tell families they can't go to the gravesite until late in the day when it looks more civilized covered up. I was completely horrified by the undignified way my father was transported to the gravesite and by the gravesite itself. Every person, and especially someone who served his country, should be treated in a dignified manner. He or she should be carefully loaded into a respectable vehicle and be driven slowly to the gravesite. He or she should be carefully lowered into the ground. My father would have been outraged to see himself or any of his comrades treated this way. My family was very upset. Had we known this is the way the cemetery operates, we would have buried him elsewhere. I encourage military families to think twice before going with this option. I do appreciate the young servicemen who handled the flag and handed to my mom. read more

My mother was laid to rest recently at veterans memorial. My father was the veteran so she is joining him. They treated us/her with upmost dignity and Deon was extremely courteous and helpful. He answered all our questions and even helped us with things we didn't know to ask. They treat you like family there. You know they will look after your loved ones. My father was laid to rest this past Monday. The service was incredibly moving. The cemetery staff were friendly and professional. The Marines that performed the honors, and I do not give this compliment lightly, were perfect. The opposite of going through the motions. I can't thank them enough. I've never been so proud and sad. My first time to a veteran cemetry. My friend's husband passed away 2 weeks ago. And I am here today for his funeral service. TAPS was played in the beginning of service. During the service the only upsetting thing was the silent folding of the U.S flag. The guards didn't do it properly. It was very loosely folded. But overall it was a good service. I was appalled at the uncaring attitude of the cemetery staff in the person of some woman standing impatiently during my son's burial ceremony on October 14, 2014. He is Francisco Bernal IV. I have been to many funerals in my life and quite a few burials at veteran cemeteries. But never have I felt we were given a bum's rush to "get moving, people, so we can get Mr. Bernal in the ground!" I have never been so hurt by any funeral employee's attitude. This was my son she was talking about as though he was a potato needing to be planted. How dare she! She just kept rushing us. Perhaps she should get this same type of treatment should she have to bury her only son under the watchful eye of a cold, uncaring wretch. My son's death due to an aneurysm or blood clot was difficult enough to take without having him insulted. My son meant nothing to her, but he was the world to me. My husband is one of the thousands laying at rest in the cemetery and every time I go to see him I am amazed at the number of new graves going in every day. The cemetery is beautiful and as the second largest National Cemetery in the country very well maintained. The staff have always answered any questions I had and the services they have are beautiful. I have been to two services within the last year and both were carried out with much respect and caring for the deceased and the family. I noticed another review on the site that stated they didn't understand why some markers were ground level. My granddaughter and I asked and were told when the cemetery was first started this is how all graves were marked but one of our Congressmen said that the soldiers should be standing erect and therefore the later markers were like the ones at Arlington. There were too many graves to change them all so they were left as they were. Nothing is more beautiful than the wreaths at Christmas and the flags on Memorial Day. read more
