Chuck was prompt, professional, and seemingly reasonable upon our first meeting.
However, when it came down to transferring our verbal agreed upon work and price to a legal contract, Chuck dropped the ball with a resounding thud. He forgot to add the closet door installation, decided he'd rather not be bothered with indoor painting, and refused to clarify which doors outside of the home I asked him to paint. Because there is a huge difference between painting a closet door or cabinet door and doing an outdoor garage, front door, back door and side door, I asked him amend his contract.
Clearly nonspecific, unclear language would have left me liable for damages had he chosen not to honor his word. So I insisted that he add specific language to the contract that addressed the outdoor painting.
All of a sudden Chuck's personality changed from a professional contractor to an argumentative, shady, slimy, and slithery, conman.
Chuck knew that I was on a deadline, and that I had hired him over someone else because his bid was lower. So he decided to take advantage of my circumstances and attempt to pull the wool over my eyes. When I demanded specific language he argued, balked and finally quit. But after he quit he continued to argue for nonspecific language. Needless to say, I hired someone else ASAP rather than continue to play Chuck's underhanded game.
