The Hourglass Seating Arbor is installed on the property of the Austin Public Health Rosewood-Zaragosa Neighborhood Center.
It's been part of my walking route for the better part of two years as it's super close to my home and one of my work locations.
This is another one of those off the beaten path pieces of art that everyone should check out & appreciate (locals and tourists alike). If you're visiting Austin, definitely check out all we're known for but find gems like this. It's so worth it!
This sculpture was created in 2006 by Philippe Klinefelter as a part of the city's art in public collection.
It's nearly 40,000 pounds and made of steel and pink Texas granite (hand carved).
Philippe has said he created the piece with inspiration from local Native American mounds, volcanoes, and pre-Colombian architecture.
Though the piece was created in 2006, it wasn't unveiled to the public until 2007.
Like I said, if you're looking for more unique and hidden gems whilst visiting Austin, this is a good one!
Note: In addition to being an installation, it's also functional. The base center is carved out for seating. read more
