Have been traveling to NoVa for the last 7 months and spend a lot of time at the Doubletree in Front Royal, the home of Houlihan's. Breakfast is pretty decent. Have had the omelet and it's good. But the manager is amazing even with very little help. Have eaten dinner at the bar often. The wings are good, the shrimp tacos are good and the jambalaya is surprisingly good for being that far from the coast. I really enjoyed the steak house salad but they took it off the menu. Now I understand why the reviews are so bad. I was staying at the hotel and didn't want to go out. I went to Houlihan's in spite of the reviews and thought I would be safe ordering a salad and the chicken tortilla soup to go back to my room. The soup was terrible. A cup of bland broth with a few shreds of chicken and lots and lots of soggy either tortilla strips or soggy wonton hard noodles that were in the aisian salad. I ordered a small Aisian chicken salad. The lettuce was the smallest portion I have ever had and the lettuce looked brown and soggyI hot the dressing on the side. I also now understand why there were only a few people in the place at 6:30 on a Friday night. DO NOT GO HERE TO EAT IF YOU'RE SMART! I went back with the salad and said something to the supposed manager who had the worst attitude. The server who helped with my carry out order was very pleasant. Houlihan's is tough to review... let me start by saying I only went bc I had a gift card. As I stood at the front area near the sign that said, "please wait to be seated" I waited almost 10 minutes. No problem, as I wasn't in a hurry. I only saw 2 service people in the entire restaurant. One waiting tables, and hostessing when she has a second, and the other was the bartender who had the bar and all the surrounding tables. Because it was just me, I sat at the bar. I asked for a spicy, skinny margarita. It was a new item for this guy, so I gave him the recipe! Unfortunately, he gave the house tequila a VERY heavy pour. I couldn't drink much of it. For dinner, I ordered their loaded potato soup which was topped with bacon, scallions and cheddar cheese. It was very good, could have been warmer. Then I got a side Caesar salad. It was lightly dressed and the Romain was fresh. I decided to order dessert, since my drink didn't go over too well. They have 2 choices- a sundae and cheesecake. I asked the bartender which was better, and without hesitation, he suggested the cheesecake. It was also very good. Look...if you're going to open as a courtesy and you don't want to be there please let your patrons know so they don't try to visit. Honestly from trying to get a table there was an attitude. I get it you were open for breakfast and now you have to serve hungry people. But serving leftovers and reheats due to your lack of food items and not even telling your patrons that's something I expect from a smaller organization not a franchise but I guess that probably why the restaurant isn't open during lunch. Honestly I feel like our group patronizing was a chore for them. Not to mention that they had a bunch of people in the back and less people running food out. Just servers pointing in the back it was unorganized like it was soft opening. Now I didn't order anything crazy just a turkey club I have never had a sandwich that salty in my life. I mean don't get me wrong it was decent slices of turkey and ham and bacon but where was the Dijon mustard? None existent I had to ask for yellow mustard cause clearly it was plain. Trying to get water was a feet also I mean I only got one refill we couldn't find our server. Overall this place would be better to avoid unless you just want a snack maybe cause it's the weekend so they are not normally busy and their staff just relaxes. Either way not the best experience and I don't normally comment on service but just watching the chaotic circus makes me wonder how they are passing code and reflecting a franchise. The nachos looked amazing but were heavily coated in a salty dry ranch seasoning which made them inedible. The fish tacos were soggy and served lying in a liquid combination of lemon, salsa, and fish water. The prime rib dip wasn't awful, but the cheese wasn't melted and you could probably get something comparable at Arby's. The French fries and draft beer were great. We were a party of 8 who were the first guests in the restaurant when they opened. After a while we noticed tables who were seated well after us were receiving their meals and we hadn't even gotten our appetizers or salads. We spoke to our server who could provide no reasonable explanation for the delay and showed absolutely no concern nor did she offer any apologies. One guest ordered jambalaya to only be told once the rest of the meals were served that there were no shrimp for the jambalaya. The guest then ordered Buffalo wings only to be advised approximately 15 minutes later that there were no more wings. The manager offered a substitute salad and burger to the guest and comped the meal. Another guest ordered dumplings as an appetizer which were semi cold from sitting so long after preparation. Overall this was a very substandard performance by the restaurant. Not meeting basic expectations is one thing but it was the indifference of the staff as a whole that was the most disconcerting. Customer service and hospitality training is sorely needed at this facility if they expect to ever score better than 3 stars. read more

I don't think I have ever written a review as negative as I am about to write for any establishment. I have eaten at this Houlihan's for many years and have always been very happy with the restaurant. Last night, I decided to take my family out to dinner (I had a birthday coupon for a free entree). There were other parties already seated, including a large party that was being very loud. We (only a party of 3) were seated and looked over the menu. Our server was very inattentive. We ordered our drinks and we wanted to put in an appetizer because we were hungry. She eventually worked her way back to the table and took our appetizer order and then walked away without even asking if we were ready to place our order. When we finally got her to return to the table to take our order she brought us the check! I said, "No. we would like to place our order." The service was extremely slow for having very few guests in the dining area. The entree my wife wished to order was sold out for the night. The menu was not the full menu I am used to seeing at this location. There were fewer choices listed on the menu. My wife asked about the ribs (which she really didn't want to order) and asked if they were on the bone or boneless. Since they were bone-in, my wife wanted to know if the meat came off the bone easily. The server said that the ribs were her favorite item at the restaurant and the ribs do easily come off the bone. We sat for a while and our appetizers and salads did not come out. Also, they did not refresh our drinks. I asked for a manager and the manager came over and talked to us. I feel that this manager was very inexperienced. We were not happy at all and considered leaving. The manager reassured us that he would be taking care of us and that our food was almost ready. We decided to stay. When our food did come out we were very disappointed in the food. The ribs were not as described and were actually quite dry. We told the manager that we were leaving and he asked us to just pay for the drinks (one soft drink, two waters) and the appetizers. We were not the only party to walk out. I have been to the dining area before and the service and food were divine. This time my son and I chose the Bar and it was a mistake. One waitress for crowded bar, and very slow kitchen apparently. Happy Hour is great! The Breakfast food is really great too! I normally post my favorite menu items but there are so many great options I really can't for once. Food speechless... hahaha. In town for 69 nights and staying at the attached hotel which includes free breakfast (which is really awesome). Ladonna, Rain, and the other breakfast staff do a good job getting your day started. The breakfast shift manager is a really nice guy and he checks on us regularly to make sure our experience is as good as it could possibly be. Dinner: I've seen some great plates rolling out of the kitchen but I usually stick to the 1/2 price apps during happy hour. The restuarant was clean, COVID19 protocols in place, friendly staff. Our waiter Andrew was incredibly polite and attentive. The drinks were mediocre. The Cubano Mojito was okay. "Here we go...." Tonight was the first night I've come close to walking out of a restaurant. What happened to this place, it used to be good?! There were a total of 4 people sitting at the bar tonight, plus two tables I think. I saw at least 5 different staff members walking around, yet it took forever to get our beer, forever to get our water, and eternity to get our food....you get the point. Once the food came it was horrible. I got the pork dumplings and they were undercooked. My boyfriend's spinach dip was sitting under a heat lamp for probably 20 minutes while the bartender was yapping away to another server. I wanted another beer but never got a chance to ask for one. Those servers must've had some interesting shit to discuss I guess because they were completely ignoring their guests. While the food was generally good, it did not leave much of an impression on us. Our visit did not start particularly well, as there was a miscommunication between us and our waiter, during which he thought we were still waiting on another person and thus did not visit our table or make eye contact with us at all for a prolonged period of time. That was unfortunate. When our food did come, I had the Brentwood Chicken Sandwich, which had a fairly strong charcoal taste. The french fries were fluffy (which I tend to like) without much in terms of seasoning. My wife had the steak wedge salad. The steak was tender and flavorful, but she was a little disappointed how none of the components of the salad were cut up (the wedge, steak, or polenta). By the time she finished cutting it all up, her wrists were hurting and others were already well into their meals. Of note, she had a side of asparagus that was really bland. We would recommend steering clear of that. Overall, we are happy that we tried Houlihan's, but will not be going out of our way to return. read more

Over the past 5+ my group has eaten at this restaurant for 2-3 meals over a couple days when we stay at the holiday inn during a canoe trip weekend. Typically the service and food are excellent. This past weekend was terrible. Friday night there were 3 of us, sitting in the bar area and we ordered 2 steaks and 2 appetizers to be served as mains. Somehow, in a restaurant that was not even busy, it took almost an hour for our food. When it arrived the steaks, including a filet mignon was tough and tasted as if they had been cooked while still froze along with them tasting as if they had been cooked on top of a burnt grill. The flatbread pizza came out black burnt. When it was brought up about how burnt it was I was told it would be another 15 to 20 minutes for a new one. But considering I was starving at that point we just let it go. Saturday night there was a large group of us although it took a long time to get our checks. When a couple of our group came back down later in the night they had a ROACH crawling on their table during the meal. Also the buffalo sauce they serve tastes almost as if it is bad, but buffalo sauce doesn't go bad so this sauce is made tasting terrible. They also seem to have taken some of the better meals off their menu which is sad. Hopefully they get their stuff together as its super sad the quality has gone so badly.
