This hotel's sole saving grace is its location: a few steps from the main train station, it is reasonably close (15-20 mins walk) to Zurich's many shopping areas.
Every other aspect of this hotel is appallingly bad. Guests are reminded at every turn to post reviews on TripAdvisor, suggesting that the property is confident of its product - that confidence is DEFINITELY misplaced.
Some reasons why this hotel is one to avoid:
1. Pitiful breakfast spread and appalling service.
Kathrin, the breakfast room server, has the demeanor of a prison guard. You can always hear her before you see her, because she wears loud shoes that go clop-clop-clop as she makes her rounds in the breakfast room. IMPOSSIBLE to read a newspaper at breakfast. I also saw Kathrin cough onto the jam (and not into her elbow as is customary), and she splattered milk onto my jeans as she was cleaning the countertop. She did not apologize and maintained the manner of a Stasi agent.
The food itself is similarly bad. I was here for a week-long stay, and the breakfast offerings did not vary. It was unfortunate having to eat the same thing every day. Muesli was much too sugary and did not taste good at all. I had better muesli on my SWISS flight. The scrambled eggs stank and the cheese plate (only 3 choices) looked sad. Honestly, the food hall at Globus carries such a wonderful variety of different cheeses at ALL price points - the hotel should have some imagination in selecting cheeses for the breakfast buffet and vary its selections by day. The bread selection is also sad. Indeed, I saw Kathrin take a loaf out of its plastic wrapper and plop it into the bread basket in full view of the clientele. Shocking. Bread should be baked in-house or, at the very least, warmed in the oven.
2. Surly front desk staff.
I attempted a request for a late check-out, owing to an evening flight. But I was told that the charge would be 20 Swiss Francs for a two-hour extension. Excuse me? I was astounded that this hotel had the cheek to ask for 20 CHF for a pitiful extension. No thanks. Similarly, the front desk staff was surly and had an attitude throughout my stay. Practice at this hotel is such that you leave your room key with the desk upon leaving the premises. Every single time I attempted to drop off or pick up my room key, the staff gave the impression that I was bothering them. Frankly, if staff feel so sensitive to being burdened with a three-second request, the hotel should not have implemented such a system. Please.
3. Terrible bed and comforter.
Bed was on wheels and kept swiveling about throughout the night. Comforter and pillow are a cheap down, and I had the most horrific allergic reaction. Pillow is also lumpy and gave me neck pain.
I can't comment on other hotel amenities beyond stating that they are minimal at this property. I did not use any of the provided toiletries but they did not look like anything special.
