I booked two nights at Hotel Vondel through a travel website but was pleased when I received a message back from the hotel when asked about the bed sizes. They had the room listed as a single bed which for US standards is a different size than what they call a single. We would call it a double bed. It was fine as I was traveling alone. The hotel is in a great location just off the main tram route and the canals. It was walking distance to the museums and other Amsterdam attractions as well as the public transportation system. Shopping was not far away and there is a beautiful park nearby as well. The hotel is older and has character. The entrance is up a few steps from the street and opens to the main desk, a small lobby and a breakfast restaurant on the other side. The hallways are narrow and have uneven floors with steps here and there. There are a couple of tiny elevators. My room was overlooking the street with a window that opens. This was a nice feature as it was early fall and it was nice going to sleep with the evening air circulating. The room size was adequate and there was a TV and desk. The closet was a cupboard with a hanger bar that was way too high for me to reach even at 5'8" tall. The room was with black pinstripe rug and dark empty walls. No pictures or a full length mirror so the elevator had to suffice for a full length look. The bathroom was black tile with a very large shower and double sinks that were about 2 inches deep. Lighting was dim. The hotel Staff were friendly and helpful with directions, suggestions and calling for cab service. I arrived early and they took my luggage to store for later while I explored the city. Overall I thought it was a good choice. read more

Really and truly disappointed with this hotel chain and service. I used them in Barcelona, and they were good. We checked on June 10, and our AC was broken; they didn't do anything to fix it Saturday and didn't do anything Sunday. They said they were fully booked and nothing could be done. How do you let two guests stay without offering them a room elsewhere, a refund, or fixing the AC in the middle of summer? I won't be back. Service and attention to our situation were lackluster. I understand lots of people were and are traveling this summer, but why did they do nothing? It seems very sketchy and like terrible business decision-making. I will not be back. read more

I love a boutique and I love any building that has character. That being said, sometimes character is just another word for "low quality". That's where I stand with my stay at the Hotel Vondel. First, the location of the hotel is it's strongest asset. We were never too far from a great place to eat, the museums we wanted to go to, or anything else in the city that we yearned to visit. This proved to be my favorite part of staying with the hotel. As far as our stay itself, nothing was especially amazing. It was certainly a place to lay down at night, but shower situation was cramped and tight and uncomfortable, room was very small with odd views, and the bed itself was much less than what I am used to. The employees at the hotel differed, some were exceptional and some didn't have any care for customer service. I'll chalk this up to a difference in culture and that I don't really know what expectations for service are here. For our stay in Amsterdam we were at Hotel Vondel. We stayed in the triple room, it was like 2 double beds together and a twin to the side of the room. The room was a very nice size room and had plenty of outlets for everyone to plug in their items. It had a nice size desk and closet with mini bar. The bathroom was huge, a nice big walk in shower and a deep bathtub. Check in and checking out was easy and staff was friendly. Hotel Vondel is in a great location too, everything was close to us and yet we felt kind of tucked away from the main street. This was a great hotel, we enjoyed our stay. read more

The staff at Hotel Vondel saved the Amsterdam leg of our trip last week. I am forever grateful. We'd originally booked with a different hotel that was, quite honestly, the worst hotel experience of my life. We tried to live with it, but around midnight, the desperation kicked in and we started trying to find a new place to stay. I am beyond thankful that Hotel Vondel accommodated us. They took us in late at night, helped us quietly check in, and the feeling of being able to close the door to our clean, cool, peaceful room was a relief beyond anything I can say. Unparalleled friendliness and customer service..I loved our shower....Close proximity to Vondelpark and a great little pancake place....Our time here was brief but very nice. I see on some other reviews commentary about the size of the rooms. I will say that ours was on the small side, and our bed was a double. In the US, we're used to larger rooms and queen- or king-sized beds. Honestly, that's just as likely to be on offer in Amsterdam. Also, our room had a few odd bits to it, born of being an older building, but they weren't a big deal. We didn't hear our neighbors, everyone we met was nice, and our gratitude for how they saved us is profound. Thank you thank you! read more

The Good: Very convenient location, friendly staff, clean and comfy beds, close to public transportation and attractions, nice bathtubs, AC. The Bad: room smelled musty/and of mildew, was downstairs under the kitchen/dining room so very loud from chairs raking across floor/people walking, no remote control for TV, no way to open windows, bathroom sink drain did not work, water pressure and temperature was not consistent, staff could not make recommendations about good places to eat near the area (we asked three separate people), breakfast was okay, but pricey, staff was not knowledgable about tours offered by hotel. read more

Hotel Vondel seemed like a great solution for a trip to Amsterdam with three kids, because it's one of the few hotels with three full beds in a room. The central location, however, is a double-edged sword. As I write this at 4:30 am there are many drunk and raucous people singing and shouting outside the room, and it's been like this all three nights of our stay. Easy walking distance to the Van Gogh and Rijksmuseum with plenty of decent restaurants around and our room, an executive suite, is only about 150 euro a night and very large and comfortable for a European hotel room. But without better noise protection I would pass on ever staying here again, because a good nights sleep has proven impossible. read more

I enjoyed our stay at this little, charming Amsterdam retreat. For a hotel with this many rating stars, I probably would have expected a bit more space in the rooms, but that is really the only thing I can complain about. The hotel entry is modern and inviting, with a nice restaurant/bar adjacent and the front desk has multiple types of refreshing, citrus/infused water. The staff was immediately responsive and I have no doubt we would have been attended to whatever time of night we arrived. The staff also was willing to hold our bags in a dedicated luggage closet while we explored the city after checking out the next day. The rooms themselves are composed of what seems to be several houses that were purchased and repurposed for hotel accommodations, and the effect is something along the lines of walking through a maze out of a willy wonka movie. We were told the styling and steep staircases were traditionally Dutch, but it came off to us as Americans feeling pretty intimidating and dangerous. I did enjoy the hotel decor, particularly in the hallways. Our rooms were also very nicely apportioned and had great wide-windowing with in-room temperature controls, as well as a pair of seat with an end table and a true desk, which made up for the undersized television. The bathroom was exceptionally modern and the shower was recently renovated. I will say from an American perspective, this was a notably smaller than usual hotel room. Given experiences as subsequent hotels in Amsterdam, this may actually be bigger than usual, but even in major US cities (New York, Chicago, DC, San Francisco, Seattle, LA) that I have spent a lot of time in I would never have expected to see rooms of this size. So if you're a foreign traveller, particularly from the states, keep in mind how different cultures may have different expectations on how big a hotel room should be. read more

Hotel Vondel is in a great location and our room looked out over green space so it was easy to keep our window open at night. We only stayed there for one night, and I'm glad it wasn't any more, because it was quite claustrophobic. There was a big desk/table at the foot of the bed that partially covered the end of the bed that made it hard to move from one side of the room to the other. The bed seemed even smaller than all the other double beds we'd slept in in Amsterdam that week. The room was very cramped and small and our two large suitcases were more than the room could handle. The bathroom was actually very spacious with a great shower head, even though the water flooded a little of the bathroom during each shower. There was great counter/vanity space and good lighting in the bathroom. read more

From reading reviews, I arrived expecting this "boutique hotel" to be a bit on the smaller side; however, it was even smaller than I imagined. I'm 5'4" & hit my head pretty hard on the ceiling beam in the tiny shower. The beds were two twin beds pushed together, which were very uncomfortable. Additionally, construction/upgrades were taking place during our stay, which also made it slightly less enjoyable. The staff, on the other hand, were excellent. They provided us with a super handy map, made restaurant recommendations, and even assisted us in getting to the bottom of a miscommunication with our transportation company. My work requires me to travel a significant amount all over the world and occasionally to some poverty stricken countries. This hotel without question was by far the WORST hotel that I've ever stayed at. A few facts; - the hotel is located just off a busy street, so throughout the night you hear drunk people walking back to their rooms, ambulances and police. Without exaggeration for the 2 days that I stayed I heard sirens at night at least 8 times. - the walls are paper thin. The TV in my room didn't work, but I was able to hear the neighbours very clearly (I.e. people talking, toilets flushing and showers running). Your also able to hear people in the hallway and walking up the stairs. - the room size I got was less than 120 square feet. I had a single bed that was pushed up against the wall. From the edge of the bed, I could open the clothes cabinet in the room and reach the desk. For space consideration, the desk doesn't have a chair but rather a backless stool. There is no counter space in the bathroom, so you need to use the desk for toiletries. In the shower, the ceiling tapers off dramatically, so you actually need to hunch over when washing yourself. - the bed wasn't on a box spring. It was a foam mattress that was on 2 stacked cushions. Your actually unable to sit on the edge of the bed without the other side lifting. - I paid in full before I arrived. 2 weeks prior I contacted the hotel and informed them I would be leaving a day early. I was unable to get a refund for the last day that I paid for.... All around (location, room, comfort, service), the stay was horrible. I would highly recommend going most likely anywhere else. read more

Perfect location on a quaint street in Oud-west near museums. I suggest venturing 15-20 minutes away for restaurants to avoid the touristy areas. The beds were comfortable but the rooms themselves are tiny, or at least mine was, and long and narrow like a hallway. Barely wide enough for a queen-sized bed and knees almost hit the wall while sitting on the toilet, which you have to step over to get in the shower. I understand hotel rooms in Europe can be small and quirky, and the boutique-like atmosphere of the lobby and building make it a pleasant experience. The walls and finishes throughout are in real need of touch-ups and a deep clean. There is a lot of random art, which could be more focused from a decor perspective. There is an elevator but the steps, should you choose to take them are small and steep. The staff was friendly but often seemed annoyed. The hotel is busy even in January, with a lot of guests coming and going - mostly late 20s travels from other parts of Europe, so perhaps they are just hurried. We were given good recommendations and directions for lunch. I did overhear a little over-booking conversation as they tried to refer guests to their "sister hotel" for "bigger rooms" for the same price. But they allowed us to check-in earlier in the day before the official check-in time of 3 pm with no problems. read more

Unfortunately, we did not have much more choice for our hotel booking, so we ended up while searching for a centrally located smaller hotel in Amsterdam with Hotel Vondel. Located at the edge of the city center the main shopping streets are nearby as are the museums quarter as well as the Vondelpark itself. The hotel itself comes with 78 double rooms and 3 suits. As I had expected just double rooms I made the mistake to book via their website the early bird rate. It was stated that they would assign you at least a small double room. However, I did not know that small means tiny in this case. The room was just 12 m2 large and it was nearly impossible for two persons to move around outside the bed. The bathroom with a mere size of 2-3 m2 made this also for one person impossible. Breakfast is way overpriced with EUR 20.00 so we skipped this and only once came to the bar to redeem our welcoming drink voucher - actually this was the only meaningful benefit you receive when booking via their website. You should also look for another hotel when you are there by car as the parking rates outside on the street - in case you get a parking lot - are quite high with EUR 36.00 per day. read more

Vondel Hotel is a nice small hotel very good located close to main attractions as well as shopping high streets. Just around the corner is the Vondel park, very good for a run in the morning/evening. For its price per night, the rooms are pretty small and so is the bathroom. Breakfast provides you with all you need, but nothing spectacular and quality isn't outstanding. All in all a good business hotel without offering too much comfort and quality. read more

Fantastic hotel, just on the edge of the city centre. It's only a short walk to all of the main attractions of the city. The hotel itself is very warm and very strangely decorated - all black and purple. The stair cases can be very steep for those who are a bit unsteady on their feet but there is a very small lift with a window which was very strange to see. The rooms are quite small but you have enough room just for a shork break. The staff are very friendly and the bar is very reasonably priced. read more
