5 Stars! Truly Exceptional Hospitality! I cannot say enough wonderful things about the outstanding customer service I received at Hotel Union Square, especially from Alfredo and Corina, the General Manager! I accidentally booked my reservation for the wrong week, and when I realized my mistake, the rates had changed. Although the error was entirely mine, Alfredo kindly spoke with his manager, and they graciously waived the rate difference! When I arrived, Corina personally checked me in and was incredibly warm, friendly, and accommodating. What could have been a stressful experience turned into such a wonderful one because of their kindness and generosity. What impressed me most was that they had absolutely no obligation to make this accommodation, yet they went above and beyond to help. It's refreshing to experience such genuine hospitality! Thank you, Alfredo and Corina, for making me feel so welcomed and valued. Your exceptional customer service truly sets Hotel Union Square apart. I'm incredibly grateful and would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel! Five stars without hesitation! read more

I visit San Francisco frequently and stay in the Union Square area most often. I prefer smaller hotels and have stayed at many of the area 'boutique' hotels. With a boutique hotel, I expect smaller rooms and quirks you won't find at a new or larger chain property. As I noted in the header, this property is decent, but has potential. I always ask for a room with two beds in a boutique hotel, it allows for more space overall. I'd read that not every room in HUS has air conditioning, I guess I was lucky, mine did, but I didn't need it. I actually found my room a bit cold (I slept in joggers & a long sleeve shirt); I think the windows are probably drafty and know the comforters are thin. That said, for its proxiy to Powell, it wasn't too loud. While my room could sleep 4, it's really a room for 2; any more than that and you are all over each other. The 'closet' is a rack about a foot wide and there was a shabby dresser next to it (not chic, finish worn and chipped); personally, I'd do a wardrobe and a narrow dresser instead. The floor was quite uneven in the hotel. The bed I slept in was hard, but most annoyingly slanty because of the floor. There was a little end table by the TV; the placement determined whether things would roll off. The bathroom needs the most fixes; most of which are inexpensive. The caulk between the sink and wall was dark with mildew. The toilet seat was yellowed and the plastic coating on top was bubbled and peeling, probably from regular scrubbing. The towel bar leaned; soon I suspect it will fall off when someone places a towel on it. The soap dish wasn't tightly screwed so the soap flew off every time I put a wet bar on it. And the oddest thing I've ever seen was the toilet paper holder was mounted 1' off the floor! (See pic) Inconvenient to say the least. It may sound like this place is terrible, it's not. It's a 3.5 star place. My room was clean, the staff is friendly, they have wine hour nightly, and the location is so convenient. I also loved the makeup remover wipes in the bathroom, every hotel should have these! I'm bummed i didn't notice the fridge in the nightstand until I was leaving. I think the only thing that really gives me pause about staying here again is how uncomfortable I found the bed and honestly, that's personal preference. My boyfriend would've loved it. read more

I always stay here when visiting San Franscisco. It's a superb location and I find it to be a small fine little place. Yes rooms are small but prices are good. Yes it's older but that give it charm. It has a little bit of a weird smell on the hallways but not in the rooms. The bed and pillows were very comfy but I'm not really a bed snob. Can pretty much sleep anywhere. Was not loud at all as we had an interior room. The bathroom was small bit clean and did the job for what we needed. Ceiling fan is a blessing to keep things circulating. Large closet and a desk were present t as well. read more

We loved this hotel, it's a little small but great location and beautiful decor, comfy beds and clean. Very beautiful hallways and main area. Free wine 5-6 every night. My only notes? there's not really a good spot to get ready at if you're trying to do makeup and hair. I settled for the floor in front of the closet mirror but there's not great lighting. There's also no fridge which was the biggest setback because we couldn't save any leftovers. also there's a $100 deposit which was fine but we weren't notified of this until we were checking in so it was a little inconvenient. You definitely can hear the city from your window but that is with anywhere in San Francisco, after the day of walking uphill everywhere you will pass right out regardless. Overall though we loved this hotel and everyone was very nice, the rooms were beautiful and quaint and the prices were fair. read more

1 1 1 1 review (single ones) goes to Hotel Union Square! Kasia, who was the lobby assistant during the time I was there, was very accomodating and friendly! The narrow hallways, reminded me of New York apartments. Their rooms and decor are modern and up to date. May I add, contemporary? I liked how they provided makeup remover wipes. That was special. Located in the heart of Union Square, it is super convenient to get around! read more

TLDR: Perhaps great for tourists on a budget, but horrible for business travelers. The Hotel Union Square is a barebones establishment (read motel). I arrived at check in to see another disgruntled customer talking to the front desk. She had found clumps of hair in her bed, the sink and the tub and wanted a refund. Great start. I finally get to my room and it's a tiny tiny 100 sqft corner room. It's hot and there's only a ceiling fan, so I open the window to find it's directly accessible to the fire escape with no security whatsoever preventing anyone from entering my room if I left it open at night. You may also find some rooms to be close to the trolly which runs during the night and early morning. If you're lucky you'll also get a homeless person shouting all night down at street level too. If you're traveling for business, don't stay here. You'll find the accommodations far below par. This is a 2-star hotel at best. read more

Hotel Union Square - No AC. The loud squeaky fan concierge provided. - Hotels Near Me - San Francisco, California

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights for a long weekend getaway to San Francisco. The website showed beautiful pictures of an old hotel that appeared to be impeccably maintained. Unfortunately that is not what we got. We were disappointed upon arrival to see the hotel completely covered with scaffolding and black tarp. The room was large but the paint was peeling on the walls and ceiling and the bathroom was tiny. There was mildew in the bathtub. Beware: They charge a $25 a night resort fee. There are no amenities that you get for this resort fee other than things that you would typically get for free at any other low end hotel. Half of the front desk staff were borderline rude. The only really good thing about this hotel was its location. The location couldn't be better. read more

Terrible experience! The worst. The hotel closed down and never bothered to tell us! I spent weeks planning this vacation, booked the room months in advance. Flew into San Fran and was dropped off with all our luggage to find the hotel boarded up! No phone numbers working, no one answering. Had to scramble to find a place to stay while standing in the street with all our bags. Zero customer service, zero communication to tell guests with confirmed reservations that the hotel was closed! Absolutely the worst. Do NOT give them your business! read more

This was my first time driving in san fran & I found it difficult to figure out which parking lot was a part of the hotel as I booked the Parking package deal. Frustrated of trying to figure it out, I called the front desk. The person working the front desk was pretty rude & made me feel "silly" for having to ask where to park. Was told to park the car in the loading dock & leave the key with them (car was not inspected so I prayed that when I checked out nothing would be wrong with the car). At this time I was so tired after driving that all I wanted was to settle in the room. Upon checking in, I was told I had 2 bookings (My first booking wasn't showing up when I had checked it a month ago & I had customer service cancel it; my 2nd booking I had booked since the 1st didn't go through). Getting to the room, I anticipated that it was small because it was called a petite economy room, but damnnnn the room was tiny lol. It was like a mini studio. But everything was clean. What was interesting was the room door had about an inch or 2 of open spacing at the bottom of it. So there wasn't entire privacy from the other rooms. What bothered me was the type of blinds they had on the windows because the light from outside shined right in and so we had to turn to the side when sleeping so that the light wasn't shining in on us. In conclusion, I was content with my stay because I felt like booking with the parking package saved me money if I didn't. But it just sucks how expensive it is to stay in san fran and not get that big/comfy of a room. I hope this helps you future visitors. read more

If all that matters is walking distance to great food and shopping, then this is a good choice. If, like me, you're gonna be here for a while and want to sleep, be comfortable, and watch TV sometimes, then look carefully at all your options. Some things: The staff here is friendly, hard working and they try to accommodate you. Especially the guy who does maintenance and customer service around the building: he's fantastic. The staff and their dedication to customer service are what make this hotel worth considering. The sounds of service trucks, police, homeless and mentally ill people are very real and nearly 24 hours a day. You will not be able to escape loud, disruptive noises. I got used to it but I also barely slept. Again, I suspect if you're looking at staying in this area, you're ok with noise and crowds but if you're a light sleeper, it's gonna be some miserable nights. Plenty of TV channels available but, even though the staff says it's due to weather, all the good channels will scramble during a cloudless day. It was almost like a bandwidth issue: can't watch a popular channel like Comedy Central but you can watch airport channels like HLN. Weird and almost not worth writing but look I did anyway. read more

Hotel Union Square is a strong four-star experience for me. In fact, I hemmed and hawed over whether to go four or five here, as it really is a nice hotel. As others have done, so shall I: Pros: -- Location is absurdly convenient - right on Powell near Market, in the middle of errything -- Staff is friendly and helpful, which is huge -- Rooms are clean, lobby is nice and decorations are chic -- My room (an executive on the 6th floor) was huge. -- I was welcomed with a nice little gift -- I like the style -- Did I mention the location? If you're a tourist, it doesn't really get any better. Same if you're doing business in SOMA -- Wine hour in the lobby with live music -- Concierge service -- Did I mention that the people who work here are rad?? -- Wireless internet is free, and that's how it should be at ALL HOTELS (Westin, are you reading this??) Cons: With location comes noise. But it wasn't unbearable. Honestly I have had some higher end experiences in SF but those experiences come at a much higher price. The rates we got here during the VMWorld conference (when all those other hotels were gouging with $500+ rack rates) were fair. Hard to say what I'd compare it to with all rack rates being standard pricing, but really it goes to about a 4.5 star experience and that's solid. So I guess I should round up to 5. Can't say how I'd feel about it if I were in a smaller room and it were really cramped. But based on my one experience, I dig it. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. read more

I stayed here for business. The desk staff was courteous. The lobby was pretty cool in its styling, fooling me into thinking I was being put up in a nicer facility. The $15 fee was off-putting. The room... Well... That's another story. Coming to the room they provided me was sort of a Machiavellian experience. I expected to see demonic twin girls randomly appear in the cramped hallways. The room.. Where to start? The smell? Let's start with that. The mildewy dusty wet dead thing smell is strong enough to suppress the faint aroma of pee that I assume is wafting up from somewhere below... The room lacks windows; at least ones that DO anything. I found this out when I opened the window and discovered where the wet dead thing smell was coming from. Hot musty air came blasting in; and the first word to come to mind was "Hell Mouth". There is no desk to sit at to get work done. There is no closet either - just some cast-off prop from an Austin Powers movie that happens to have coat hangers on it. The air conditioning unit is a rollaway thing plugged into the other not-window. And I suspect the smell may be from it and its siblings along the stank-shaft pouring their condensed moisture down the same hole. This is likely to feed Cthulu's love child from that time he was tripping on LSD with the hippies. Another note on the AC unit - you can either not get a good night's sleep and leave it huffing away all night like an iron lung, or shut it off and have the Hell Mouth eat you... The backing on the bed is where vinyl yoga rolls go to die. The mirrored wall makes me think I'm on the set of an adult movie. I'm not sure if it's obscuring glass that makes up the bathroom wall, or all the calcium deposits on them. The dark red paint make the tiny room feel more oppressive and claustrophobic. There's a flatscreen TV on the wall, but nowhere you can get comfortable to watch it... Battlestar Galactica 1980 called and wants its room service phone back. The broken outlet covers really give the room a bohemian feel of electrical shock hazard... I guess you could say I'm less than impressed with the facility. I don't want a contrived apology either. Just a different place to stay when I come back down for work. read more

LOOOOVE this hotel!! It was my first time in SF & this hotel was definitely a good pick. It was literally a 5 min walk from the BART station which is really convenient. It's smack dab in the middle of everything! Very safe area and it's near all the shops. Uniqlo and H&M are litereally across from it. Surprisingly there wasn't much noise coming from the trolley at night. We came here for our anniversary and Hotel Union Square made it so memorable :) We originally booked an executive king, but got a free upgrade to the junior suite. From the outside you might easily miss the hotel as there is no big sign. Just know it's right next to this thai restaurant (which we were tempted to try every time we walked back to the hotel, but never got the chance to). The inside was really nice and chic. When we arrived they had the table set out for free wine get together tasting. Anyway the suite was AWESOME. A lot better and more spacious than any vegas room I've got (well maybe except the Wynn, but it came close). The bed was comfy, we had no trouble sleepin at all and sheets were puffy just the way I like it. Bathroom was huge especially the shower. What kinda sucks is the bathroom has no suction vent, you gotta use the window, but most hotels are like that. We got a wonderful view of the powell street cable car line and stores since we got the highest floor. I swear this room could have easily fit like 8 people especially w/ the pullout sofa bed. TV was a bit small, but we were barely in the room to watch it anyway. Ok so the funny thing is you know how you see in movies where there are mirrors on the ceiling on top of the bed? Well, our room had these cool lights instead arranged into the size of what the mirror would be. At night, when you turn off all the lights, the lights on top stay dimly lit which made it very calming to sleep with instead of having to leave the bathroom light on or something. Very clean hotel, no bed bugs at all! Everyone from the maid to the front desk were very polite and helpful. OH AND DID I FORGET TO MENTION, another plus is that for our anniversary the manager surprised us by having Ghirardelli chocolates on the bed arranged with a note signed by him. It was a cute note, I'll have to post it later. Talk about customer service at its finest! By the way, the internet in the room was really fast surprisingly. Overall one of the best hotels I've stayed at. Next time we visit SF again, I'm gonna book this place or maybe at one of their sister hotels that have a gym. Yeah that's probably the only downside that this hotel doesn't have a gym. However, they do have a business center which we used to print our alcatraz tour tickets for free! Another bonus is that we had to check out around noon, but our flight wasn't til 5 and we wanted to explore more of SF w/out carrying our luggage around so the front desk was nice enough to store our luggage for us free of charge til we got back. I can't express how great this hotel is in terms of accommodations and room. read more

Went to SF for a business trip and ended up here. SUPER convenient location and cool perks like wine hour and coffee/tea in the lobby. They even have SF Giants themed rooms :) I liked how they provide makeup remover towelettes, don't see that very often at hotels. The only complaint is that it can get noisy (outside noise from being right in downtown and I was at the corner room) so may be advisable to bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. read more

I was very unhappy with this hotel. I booked the hotel through Booking.com but was forced to cancel my reservation due to illness. Now, I understand that the hotel has a 24 hr limit to cancellation but I was 30 minutes behind the limit. I called twice, emailed twice, and constantly received the run-around from staff that they would have a manager get back to me. They didn't. And when they finally did two days later and after my card was charged, they claimed that my cancellation was the day of the scheduled reservation. I corrected them and they backed down, only to claim that as I was half an hour late, they would not be waiving anything. I understand cancellation policies, but they wouldn't even confirm the cancellation, even though I was supposed to receive it within 24 hours. And no one would give me a straight answer until I pushed it. Overall impression was terrible customer service and incompetence. I won't be recommending this place nor staying here. There are far better hotels in the city that are quite nice and where you don't get the run-around read more

Great little contemporary decorated hotel ... the rooms are SMALL but cozy- as the the bathrooms! SF does not require that places, including homes have AC so it does get a bit warm in the summer time (we stayed here in June). Good customer service and the wine hour is a plus- featuring live music! Features by far the best water I have ever tasted in my life- with the coconut filtration; located on the 2nd and 4th floor- while they don't have water bottles like most hotels do in the rooms; this hotel offers you a collapseable water-bottle which you can keep and refill on these floors. You're close to great restaurants, bars, and shopping... huge plus! We booked through booking [dot]com and when we tried to upgrade to a two bed it was a hassle so we kept the single bed to share for both me and my best friend. The say was over all good, and nothing too stand out with the staff they were friendly but quiet. read more

This stay started out a bit bumpy which is why I am giving a 4-star rating. The original "deluxe queen" room was a disappointment. There was barely enough space to pull out an ironing board. We have quite a bit of luggage and although the closet was large, there was no light inside. We requested to be moved if another room opened up and by the next morning, Heather worked her magic and was able to place us in a new room with 2 queen beds and plenty of room for all of our luggage (plus an ironing board)! We were thrilled! Working with Heather and Jewel has been great. Heather has been kind and beyond helpful and accommodating! Jewel has been helpful, extremely friendly and hospitable since our arrival. Pros: Location Great staff Updated rooms (make sure to ask when you book since it seems there can be quite a difference between rooms). Nice lobby A/C in rooms Cons: "Deluxe queen" room that we were in was VERY small, simplistic and basic- not even a safe in the room. Overall, Heather and Jewel turned what would have been a 1-star trip into a perfect trip! read more

Dawn M. and I stayed here for NYE 2014. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay. There were a number of positives and only a few negatives. LIKES -------- -GREAT LOCATION. Hotel Union Square is perfectly situated in the heart of Union Square. Step outside and find yourself in the middle of all the action. -SUPER CLEAN. Despite being an older hotel, we were both impressed with how clean it was. Zero complaints. -FRIENDLY CONCIERGE. We were warmly greeted, had our requests promptly attended to, and didn't have any issues at check out. -AFFORDABLE. Booked our room for NYE 2014 in December for around $200. -SURPRISINGLY QUIET. No idea how our room was so soundproof given the hotel's busy location. DISLIKES ------------- -Maybe not a "dislike", but the bed was a little lopsided. -No mini-fridge or clothing hangers -The TV was awkwardly placed in one corner of the room We would definitely stay here again. The room was TINY, but then again, most standard rooms in SF are. Check out wine hour from 5-6 PM! read more

We got the Soak and Sleep room here for 1 night during the Yelp 10-Year Celebration weekend. The room was long but bigger than we expected. I feel like this place deserves 1 more star when compared relatively to the other options in the area (but I don't have enough experience to say that for sure). Pros: - Convenient location right in the heart of downtown. - Nice shower with excellent water pressure and temperature control. - Comfortable platform bed, which you can't even tell it's a platform bed. Cons: - Even though the lobby might look white and modern, the rest of the hotel looks completely different. The hallways are narrow and covered in red. Honestly, it look like some scene taken straight out from a horror movie. No joke. - Crappy air conditioning system, which is essentially a standalone space cooler. It was extremely loud and even though the unit is set to 62 (lowest setting), the room was still 75+. Turning on the ceiling fan and turning off the ceiling light helps. - There's this strange smell in the hallways and the room but we couldn't figure out what it is. Maybe burnt tires or some strange cleaning supplies. Either way, just like any smells, your nose gets adjusted to it after a while. - No exterior windows, which adds to the horror factor and the ventilation problem. Overall, this is definitely one of the worst (or most unconventional) hotel experience we've ever had. However, when considering how last minute we made the reservation and the fact that we got the room for less than $200, I think it's a win. The shower was nice and no, we didn't get any bed bugs. So if you need to stay in the downtown SF area and don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars for a "normal" hotel experience, I would actually recommend this place. DO NOT come here if you're claustrophobic. If you have a car, use one of the parking garage services near-by. There are many options within 2-3 blocks. read more

Perfect location, but hotel is very old and dark , the room not very inviting.... I will post couple pic and you all decide . I ask for an other room , but front desk , told me - nothing available. This hotel we booked a week ago and we arrived at 10 am, waiting for room to be ready .... I don't think I would stay in this hotel again .... Pic on website was beautiful, but in real life .... And it's not cheap . I I had respond from person who is working in this hotel. Telling me again , nothing was available at the time, when we asked to change the room , because room where they put us was disgusting! Point is -how room like this can even exist??? Is anyone pay attention to the chair in this room ? Is it not replaceable? Old, damaged chair ? Really? What about just to fix the door nub? Is it not possible? Really? But to charge $350 for night it's ok ? Really ? Shame !!! read more

We used to love staying here, but it seems with the daily amenities fees, and the very uncomfortable mattress we slept on - not worth it anymore. We had to call the front desk around 10pm about people running around the room upstairs for an hour, which didn't stop until around 2:00am. While that's not the hotels fault, it made our stay worse. Maybe in a pinch we will stay here, but unfortunately we were really let down by the hotel this time. For the price we paid we may stay at another hotel. :( Three stars because it was very clean and the staff is friendly. read more

We had a great two night stay here! The hotel staff was very warm, welcoming and helpful. Jewel remembered where we were from and playfully greeted us by saying "Good morning Sacramento & Indianapolis!" It was nice that he took the time to get to know us. Our room was beautiful - definitely what I picture when I think of a boutique hotel. Somewhat old fashioned looking but with plenty of modern touches. The room was clean and stocked with everything we needed. I called down to the front desk to request extra towels and they were delivered hot in about three minutes. The most notable perk for us was the location. Perfectly situated in the heart of the shopping areas, Union Square, etc. You can catch the famous trolley right outside the hotel door and Starbucks is on the corner. It's a two block walk from the Powell St. MUNI station, from which you can get anywhere in the city. We will stay here next time we visit. I do recommend getting a room with AC. Obviously it keeps the room cool but also allows you to shut the windows at night, eliminating street noise. Smokers be advised, you can smoke in the hotel's rear parking lot. read more

I stayed here a few weeks ago for three nights and it was A-OK. It was my first time staying in the city and I was there for work, but the big name hotels near the office were booked and I found a good rate here and decided to go for it. It's right off the trolley line so I was advised to request a room away from the front, which I received. It's a nice hotel, "chic" lobby with fruit infused water and the staff at the front was helpful with checking in and out. I overheard the concierge working with a few folks coming and going and he seemed very kind and helpful. My room was shockingly small, since I am used to oversized rooms for just one queen bed. But for my purposes of sleeping and showering, it was just fine. I also believe I got one of their run of the mill rooms (no frills double). There was no closet which would have been nice but I survived. Everything was clean, though there was a little musty smell to the hotel upon first entrance that went away after I got used to it. It was within walking distance to my hotel and if necessary, I'd stay there again. read more

Hotel Union Square is my favorite place to stay in the city: a charming boutique hotel just steps from the bustle of Union Square, the Powell St. cable car, the BART, buses, Chinatown, the Metreon, and the convention center. This hotel started out as the first boutique hotel in the city, and was revamped recently into a hip-yet-fashionably-old-fashioned modern boutique hotel. The location and value are hard to beat. The staff is fantastic, friendly and helpful, and the hotel is decorated in a lovely combination of warm hues - mustard, eggplant, burgundy. Local artists adorn the walls, and if you're a fan of "The Maltese Falcon," consider getting the Dashiell Hammett Suite. Can't bear to leave your pooch behind? Hotel Union Square is a member of the Personality group of hotels in San Francisco, which not only welcomes your doggy friends, but helps pamper them! Complimentary services include: WiFi available throughout the hotel; business center; safe deposit boxes at the front desk; nearby fitness center. There is on-site parking with in-out privileges (a *huge* plus in SF) - with parking and a gas card being included in some of the room rates - and they have a currency exchange right outside the front door. If you're a light sleeper, ask for a higher level room or one not facing the street - the cable car that passes out front can be loud. (Note: there are a couple rooms per floor that have windows that look into an air shaft instead of outside; take a look at the floor plan when they give you your key.) Rates start usually run $99-199; keep an eye on their website and sort through the different rates to get the one you want. The less frills you need - ie. their gas/parking package; some specialty packages like 'girls night out' - the cheaper a rate you can find. Great hotel, and one I love to return to. read more

This was the second time we stayed here. This time we upgraded to the PENTHOUSE SUITE. Huge space(700)sq ft and had a porch. It was very spacious and comfortable for the most part. The "living room" has a huge couch that folds out into a queen bed,and a small bar in it.Huge flat screens in both rooms! As you go up the small steps there's a desk for you laptop, love the free wifi! After that it leads to the bed room, has a door for privacy from the rest of the suite. There is one bathroom with 2 doors (entry through bedroom and desk area, both lock). pros: -spacious -privacy -comfortable -best beds! -cute decor -free tea in the morning and free wine at 5pm!! -parking lot in the back -close to the tour buses -Loris diner is right across the street cons: -bar area in horrible condition/cabinets falling apart -a large bulb was broken on our porch, there was glass everywhere. After I called to notify them they never sent someone up to clean it. -views are not that great from the porch area ,unless your into views of only the roof. -porch furniture was horribly uncomfortable and table was broken in half and held together with wires. I'm only deducting a star because of the decal on the wall. Surely I can't be the only one who is bothered by the decoration? I also didn't really find the coat hanger in the corner with a trench coat and fedora that nice because it just made me very jumpy haha. But aside from the decor I have nothing bad to say about this place. Service here was amazing. I arrived early on Sunday morning and since my room wasn't ready I left my luggages with the hotel concierge and Kasia at the front desk said they will let me know via text message as soon as I can check-in. Around noon, I got a text notifying me that my room is ready. Room was clean and had a lot of lighting. Bed is super comfortable! Definitely one of the best mattresses I've slept on - firm but still soft. Pillows are a bit meh but oh well. Bathroom was nice, had great amenities like shampoo, conditioner, soap etc but HUS went above and beyond and provided makeup remover :) Super nice, don't you agree? I didn't get to try the coffee in the lobby during my stay but they offer a variety of coffee every morning. read more

Got the night during the holiday Black Friday extended sale so for the price of the hotel and everything that came with it I have no complaints! I got to this hotel the night before thanksgiving where I was met by a bewildered and aggressive security guard with an less than helpful vibe and a go to hell attitude. Tried to call the number listed on the reservation and no one picked up.... finally got their reservations desk and the first staff member did not even know about the current state of the hotel, the second staff member was more helpful, AND NOW THEY ARE REFUSING TO REFUND ME!!!!! I can only imagine how incompetent their actual guest services must be whenever the hotel is actually operational. I rarely leave reviews, DO NOT BOOK HERE! I stayed here for one day because I was going to a show at the Warfield. The employees were extremely nice which made me enjoy staying at the hotel even more. They even gave me an upgrade by surprise. Location was convenient as it was walkable distance from everything (the mall, the park, the warfield, and many places to eat). The only thing I didn't like about the location was the noise level (all from outside, esp. in the morning/afternoon), but that was tolerable on the fifth floor. There was no fridge (which was upsetting because I had some water I wanted to keep cool). The bathroom was a bit small, but as long as there's a toilet and a shower, it's all good. Overall a great place to stay in the Union Square area. read more

I would mark 5 star, but people expect certain amenities for that. but this hotel was fabulous...it was a slice of SF life. It's a boutique Hotel, allot of character & flavor. It's just a couple blocks form the trolley turn around....100% enjoyed our stay....staff VERY helpful...it's right on the street; the windows actually open and pigeons will come sit on your window sill. At night you can people watch out your window. Our room looked onto the street which we liked...if you need uber quiet, get one away from street. You can also watch trolleys to your heart's content from your room if you have a street view room. read more

Small, loud, great location, old, nice... The back and forths of this place are plenty, I guess the bottom line is if you're here on business and expect to get good sleep then you're not gonna like it. If you're here for fun then this is the place for you. Between the trolley dings, bell hop whistles, drunk kids at all hours of the day, trash trucks at 1AM, transients doing what transients do, etc. It makes it hard for you to get good sleep and do what you need to do, but like I said if you're here for fun and you don't mind all the distraction I would stay here again. read more

This past weekend was my second time staying here. I came back for the familiarity, price, and location. The first time I had a queen bed but the room was quite small, I think it was a petite queen room. Well it sure was petite but still got the job done. I go to San Fran more for the city than the hotel. This time they upgraded us to a delux room and it was so much bigger. I appreciated the upgrade! Location is great, not far from most attractions/shopping/sights. However, just know Tenderloin is only a few streets away which is not a good area. But it is still far enough away that I felt safe in this hotel both times I've stayed. Parking! Ugh parking is expensive! The parking lot they use to have next to the building is now closed and they valet park only for $55/night which is actually $63/night after tax. Insane. However the garage right next to the hotel on O'Farrel is max $42/day and can leave your vehicle for up to 72 hours. I recommend leaving your vehicle and walking and/or ubering during your stay. Parking is not fun in San Fran and you don't want to have to deal with it. My vehicle was safe and I had no trouble. I stayed one night in the hotel and left my car in the garage for the next day while we went sight seeing. So from 1pm Friday to Saturday about 6/7pm it cost me $64 total. For the hotel I was told they would have charged another $55 for time after checkout or could not hold the vehicle after checkout. I would stay in this hotel again for sure and just park in the garage next door. read more

Got a room here in January for a getaway and it was great! The location is awesome, right in the middle of everything. The only downside though is that it gets noisy because the cable car runs on the street outside the hotel. But that can also be a plus because you are within walking distance of everything downtown. We got an upgraded suite with a king-sized bed because no one travels in January and things are pretty inexpensive around that time. The room was like a rock star room with mood lighting and a huge bed with mirrors everywhere....I know what you're thinking you dirty bird. They have a little cocktail hour I think from 4-6? The front desk people were great, really nice and friendly. A tip if you are staying here, upgrade if you can. Space is scarce in San Francisco and we saw what I think was a basic room and it looked like a dorm room/jail cell. read more

My boyfriend and I booked this hotel on an app called hotels tonight . We booked it 15 mins or less before arriving. The lobby was small, but looked really nice decorated with the Christmas tree. The lady who checked us in was very kind and helped us with anything we needed. When we arrived to our room, first thing I looked for was the view from our room. I was very excited about the view because the hotel is located right next to Union Square. I was little let down when I saw just a black wall as my view. The wall didn't even let any sunlight in. Besides the view, above the bed was a some padded thing on the wall, which was nice to lean up against while sitting in the bed. I gave this hotel 4 stars because it has an amazing location and friendly staff, but no view from our room. I would definitely return but request a room with a view next time. read more

Hotel Union Square - The most interesting bathroom door I have ever seen - Hotels Near Me - San Francisco, California

I had a wedding in Sonoma this past weekend and the wedding couple recommended staying at Hotel Union Square since they would have shuttles running from Union Square to the venue. Bad idea. Pros - In the heart of San Francisco - Super nice concierge who helped me check into my room early to get ready for the wedding - Relatively clean hotel room Cons - My hotel room had no real windows. Absolutely no natural light could get into the hotel room - The air conditioning was a space cooler that barely kept the room comfortable even when cranked up - The air conditioning unit drew air from a musty ventilation shaft giving the entire room a musty smell These cons were huge for me. I was in a one bedroom on the fourth floor and it was pretty miserable. I have never before been to a hotel that did not let in some form of natural light and the large space cooler (see pic) made so much noise that I had trouble staying sleep. Unless you're willing to shell out the big bucks for an executive hotel room, I suggest finding somewhere else to stay. The additionally high price for one night wasn't worth the inconveniences. read more

My husband and I booked this boutique hotel due to location and price- and it fulfilled those criteria fantastically. However- we won't stay here again. Despite the face that the hotel itself is easy to get to via public transportation and convenient, and the lobby is very well done, the room we stayed in gave us the creeps. The decor was slightly off-putting. Maybe I'm not trendy enough but when we first walked into our room, there were two fans going with dimly lit lights accentuating the eerie and overwhelmingly red color of everything. I mean, everything- the wall paper, carpet, and tile in the bathroom. In addition, there was an absolutely horrible smell in the room- somewhere between a musty old attic and something fermenting. After the first night, I couldn't take it anymore and bought air freshener since they wouldn't let us change rooms. The air conditioning system is a portable unit that sucks air in through the fake window. It's really loud and might be a contributor to the dank smell. Something else that struck us as odd was the lack of natural light. And by lack of, I mean there was none. The two windows in the room led to a dark crawl space like chute, which we speculated once was open to air. There's a tiny "window" in the bathroom that also leads to the same dark chute. This gave off a very claustrophobic vibe, despite the high ceilings in the room. We honestly could not tell what time of day it was, which made getting up in the morning a challenge. The staff was friendly enough. We didn't need anything beyond the typical check in. We did request a room change but they did not grant us that request, despite having open rooms. After reading other reviews, I think that if you have the money to spend for a nicer suite or a room with a window, it might be worth it. I am creeped out enough to avoid this place and stick to a Marriott or Hilton or somewhere where I know what I will get, even if it's a bit pricier. We almost joined the group of reviewers on here who left and booked another hotel, but since we had booked in advance and paid in full, decided to stick it out. read more

Great little boutique hotel ... the rooms are small but cozy! Only one disappointment... room 22 does not have AC and gets incredibly warm. Good customer service and the wine hour is a plus! You're close to great restaurants and shopping... huge plus! read more

Reserved soaker tub room, took or credit card at the higher rate, we get to the room, no soaker tub. No other room available, no price reduction or other compensation offered. See, you know how to take the reservation, you just don't know how to *hold* the reservation and that's really the most important part of the reservation, the holding. Anybody can just take them. After min and showing rooms available in website, we got an upgrade. Still no soaker tub, but better. This upgrade room still less than soaker tub room read more
