For anyone interested in reducing carbon footprint, some of the best options are liquidation centers. You may not always find what you need, but you just might find something you didn't realize you wanted, at a fraction of the cost of splurging on new. Yes, some items are coming from hotels, such as what you find here in Van Nuys, but those also can be items built a little bit better that mass produced cardboard. Not always, but sometimes. I love Hotel Surplus Outlet as a place to peruse a few times a year, especially if I want an interesting piece of art, or a chair I won't find at....Hmmm, where DOES one go to find a chair these days, Wayfair??? Anywho, HSO is also a good place to pop into if you host gatherings more than a couple of times a year. They have quite a few items from hotel kitchens and room service, think chaffing trays, as well as dishes of varying styles and sizes, all usually in multiples. If you need to furnish an apartment or home on the cheap, maybe starting with dishes and utensils, this is a good option. Also, check them out for used weight room equipment, treadmills and stationary bikes. Some of my friend's best long-use bowls, I recently found out, came from HSO. I didn't even know she enjoyed coming here as well! If you work with electronics, there are many kinds here and I would think at least some could be used for spare parts for repair shops. Patio furniture? Lighting? Bedding? Artwork? Mirrors? Hey! Need a landline phone??? Come check out HSO. When you walk in you will see a few pieces to gradually introduce you and prepare you for what's to come. There's also a front desk if you were wanting to ask about something in particular. If you just want to leisurely walk through and get inspired, you are welcome and not trailed with a salesperson nagging at you. Some days I don't find anything but inspiration for what my house COULD look like if I cleaned it, but most of the time I just like seeing if there's anything I didn't know I needed. Last September I was looking for a MCM style bar cart. HSO had quite a few, but not exactly what I was looking for. Tip: If you do see an item, make sure there isn't more than one. They'll each have a slight flaw, but some aren't as obvious as others, which gives you options to choose what you like best. This is also a good source for used work desks and chairs, if you need something simple for a small space - think hotel room desk areas. Also, they do have some interesting headboards and living room consoles. Hotel Surplus Outlet is an interesting - and HUGE selection. This place is the absolute BEST! Many (many) years ago, I had a friend with a lamp I just could not get over... I recognize that sounds a bit silly, but every time I was at her house I commented on how much I loved that lamp. For years afterward, I was always on the hunt for a standing lamp that was similar, but the best I could ever find were poorly made and flimsy by comparison. That tragedy aside, she told me she had purchased the lamp at Hotel Surplus, and while they no longer had the "lamp of my life" (as we affectionately referred to it), it was how this gem of a store was put on my radar. Hotel Surplus is unlike any other home furnishing store around... with both new items (at some absurdly low prices), as well as hotel liquidation items from high-end boutique style hotels, you can find a variety of really well made, original pieces to complement your space. That said, if you need to furnish an Airbnb, or stage your home in order to get the perfect pictures to sell it for top dollar, this should be the FIRST place you go. They have particularly amazing deals on large mirrors and wall art- which even if you just purchased for the frame the art piece is housed in, are at killer prices you cannot beat. They have outdoor furnishings, one of a kind pieces, and it's a great place to grab a small fridge for a dorm room. I check their website all the time and stop in as often as I can, since their stock is always rotating- and when the Eaton and Palisades fires devastated our Los Angeles community at the beginning of the year, Hotel Surplus immediately offered emergency furniture accommodations for those affected- which I thought was above and beyond. This place (while huge), has a real mom-and-pop small business feel- everyone is kind and welcoming, they give you information on how to make the most of your visit, are available for all questions you might have, and they never trail you, trying to make a sale (which I have always hated about other large furnishing stores). I cannot say enough great things about this place- I recommend them to everyone I know. read more

The dude with a beard is rude as hell. He is the one that brings out the furniture. Rolled my bed frame out while rolling it falls on the floor and doesn't say sorry or nothing. Then I was told the bed frame needs to be reassembled so he did. Gave me all the pieces from his pocket not even sure if he gave me all the pieces. Service was excellent. They greet you upon walking in and are all very helpful. We were able to get some great pieces for very reasonable. They're very honest in letting you know if a piece isn't perfect condition or sun damaged which I appreciated. Great selection of items. I've heard of this business for a long time and we were finally in the area to check it out. Nothing is wrong with the service or how you're greeted as I can see, and there are new items in the front of the store. I was expecting things to be in used condition or slightly damaged given that the items came from hotels. What I was not expecting, was the insane price ask on furniture that was stained, ancient, the dust was not even cleaned off. It's an absolute disgrace and unrealistic the price they're asking given the condition. I would expect to find these items at Goodwill for $50, not a stained, ripped, old as hell armchair asking $300. Are you guys serious ? Even the dish and serveware jn the back room that were covered in dust and grease were asking $20 for drinking glasses. I can get them at Home Goods for a fraction. Would like to give this place business, but your prices are ridiculous and unrealistic. There's a line between what's appropriate pricing for used items and what is not. 90% of the items here are in the condition of Goodwill (sometimes there are even better things there !) while having an asking price of new furniture. read more

All of their furniture is fantastic... except for their bed frames! I bought a bed frame from them back in July (to be fair the model was discontinued so they maybe should have been a warning) and now about a month and a half later it is breaking. One entire side of the bed is practically on the floor. The lamps I've gotten from them are amazing. The two table set I got from them looks fabulous. Wow - I wish I had known this place any earlier. For my wife's birthday party, I bought extra champagne glasses - I just hate plastic. As we had 20+ guests, .... I believe I spent $5 per glass. Then, someone told me to check out this places - and got Schott Zwiesel glasses for $1 - as they were on sale. I was stunned. This place sells, as the name says, surplus stuff from premium hotels - Beverly Hilton, SLS, Four Seasons - the works. Some is worn, some feels brand new. We went for the Philip Starck chaise longue - a custom design I would expect to sell in the high $$$$ range - for less than $500. You gotta check out the place again and again, as they get stock every day. Some one wrote "Thing is they seem to be a bit understaffed as we waited 15 minutes to get help from an associate to check on a price and ended-up leaving. This business sells garbage furniture and you should not purchase anything from them. The styles are intriguing and the prices are impressive but at the end of the day, you really only received an extremely cheap piece of furniture that you will have to replace within a year or 2. My wife and I bought a mattress here a few years back and after rotating and flipping it every other week for a year, the mattress became so lumpy that it was simply intolerable. We attempted to replace it and get some sort of refund from the retailer and they were entirely unresponsive. Do not spend your money here. read more

Here's what I know so far ... I own a rental that I furnish and I found three wood luggage racks for less than the price of a single rack at a consignment shop in Indio. They had some scratches that I easily covered with wood pens from Home Depot - and they frankly look brand new and quite elegant. While I was there - I saw pictures that looked nice, outdoor furniture, side tables. I can see coming here as one of my options when decorating my furnished rentals. Prior to coming - I called and found the lady on the phone quite polite and helpful which is nice before I made the drive. Nicest folks ever. Really. Yes, I came on a weekday at around 11ish, so it wasn't busy. However the sales team were super supportive and helpful and willing to "Let's Make A Deal" without me even asking. + 1 Star - Easy to find. I cannot tell you how much it sucks to drive around the heart of god-forgotten East LA and look for places. This place is easy to get to off the 405 or 170 and then you just jump back onto Sherman Way to escape the Valley. Easy Parking too. - 1 Star - No delivery. Meh. You can get a list of names from them. + 1 Star - Good Stuff and Cheap. I got an entire living room's worth of nice stuff for only $980! And it looks very spiffy. I'm psyched. - 1 Star - Website. At some point in her adult life a girl must become a woman. An important rite of passage: she must give up the Ikea bedroom and move to something a bit more ...substantial. Now don't get me wrong, Ikea is great for temporary and cramped living situations but when you have been living in LA for three years it's pretty much safe to say you are going to stick around for a bit. Unfortunately most of the bedroom sets I looked at were either really ugly or really expensive, neither of which is going to work for this girl-turned-woman. (on a budget) Enter Hotel Surplus Outlet. You walk into one big warehouse and it's filled with sofas, chairs, TV hutches, dressers, bed table, end tables....all from hotels that have either gone bankrupt or re-furbished. Because of this you get a great deal on some solid pieces. I walked out with a queen bed, a dresser and end table for about $700.00. That's the really good part, you really can't even get a decent bed for seven hundred these days (believe me I looked and the one I fell in love with at first? 1600.00) The bad part is the lack of delivery. They give you a list of people who you can call and pay to deliver to you but I was just around the corner and stubborn. So I enlisted the BF to help and bless his heart help he did by carrying all these heavy wood pieces upstairs with my weak-gal self (excuse me, weak-woman) . The problem came when I put my bed up and realized they had given me a twin, not a queen. Their mistake. You would think that with this they would come pick up their mistake and bring me the new one but no, I had to take the twin down on my own and enlist the help of another good soul to take it back to the facility and get the right size. The owner/manager did apologize profusely and offered a discount on another purchase but I was already in pretty deep and couldn't splurge. What would've been better was if they had switched it out at their inconvenience (not mine). (What did work out for me was having great people in my life, I'd give them five gabillion trillion megaillion stars if I could) Bottom line: Good place to shop for a deal on good quality furniture but be prepared to either shell out extra for delivery or haul on your own. read more

Again, this particular review would be better represented if Yelp would allow half stars for the review. On that note, here we go.... Years ago, HSO was an amazing place to shop. Many, many furniture and decor items that were very reasonably priced and I didn't mind driving across Los Angeles County to go for a shop a few times a year. Well, things changed... like locations (2 moves that I can think of) and they seem to be settled in for the long haul where they are now. Where is the "but" of all this... well, here it is... While it is true that HSO does still buy and sell furnishing and accessories from hotels, some of the properties very well known, it appears that over half of their showroom is dedicated to new furniture that I don't think was intended for any hotel, anywhere. Its really kinda odd... like a mom and pop furniture company is selling their new products in a mom and pop retail outlet with low overhead. I mean, thats fine for comparison decision making with some pieces, but if your wanting to come to a place that solely deals with reselling of furnishings from recognized hospitality chains, then HSO is not the shopping experience you may be looking for. All that comparison aside, the hotel amenities that they do sell (think lamps, end tables, pictures and limited pieces of furniture) are the run of the house from really affordable to really obscene. If your looking to refresh the art on your walls and lamps for the room, then you will find an almost overwhelming choice to choose from at quite reasonable prices (some as low as $5). As for the hotel furnishings the pricing goes from fairly decent to obscene depending on how much they have in stock of that particular piece and where it came from. Pricing is sometimes negotiable but not guaranteed. Oh, don't expect an over abundance of assistance when your in the"showroom" For those that don't like to be "pestered" this could be a good thing, but if you have a question to ask someone you might want to pack a lunch and wait it out. read more

This place is a great idea in theory. They have some good finds here but we've looking for a bed/headboard for three months to no avail. I like a lot of their stuff and there is a wide array of items but something always falls short. We went in and were helped by someone pretty quickly. We picked out a few beds on their sales floor but the staff member had to go check if they had them in an eastern king. He disappeared and didn't come back. After 15 mins of waiting, we went to the desk to find him helping someone else. So we asked another employee to look it up for us but it turned out none of them were available in an eastern king. For some reason, everyone in California thinks they should only get a California king. There were some other styles we could order from a catalog but they were 3 times the price of the floor models and not a good deal at all. I subscribed to their newsletter but nothing new EVER comes in. They have the same beds but, again, none of them are available in an eastern king and nobody can tell us if they will ever get them in the size we need. So while I believe they have some good deals here, it may take years to find them. read more

There was a lamp that intrigued me, but I found the price unreasonably high. Some of the stuff was very nice, but if you don;t have access to s van & a staff to move it, it's probably not for you. If you DO have access to those, you might really find some bargains. read more
