My wife and I were so involved in events in Texas, we both forgot our 24th anniversary. What to do? Where to go? We are weird as we like to treat ourselves to restaurants out of our own city. I had researched the Stebbins before. It seemed like a worthy place for our celebration. So we called and made a reservation (good thing we did, as they were turning people away without one); and took the scenic drive to Algoma. We got there early and sat at the bar. We told the barkeep we were there for our anniversary celebration. That was the right thing to say as the staff fawned us after that. We had a couple of Tanqueray and tonics that were sufficiently stout. The bar area was fairly raucous as the Brewer's game was on. Then we found out we could eat at the bar. So we ordered some onion rings. I know they're not that good for you; but they are my guilty pleasure. Their onion rings are pretty dang good. At our appointed time we were shown to the dining room, which we found surprisingly small. Our waitress was a perky and friendly lass and her service was great. 99% of the time I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. On that one percent I'll channel the pescatarian in me. So will my wife. So I ordered a shrimp dish and she ordered fish. Both of our meals were excellent. My side was baby red potatoes. My wife had a twice baked potato. Just a tip to the restaurant, the presentation and meal would have benefited with a green vegetable on the plate, broccoli, please. As I said our waitress was very efficient and pleasant. After our meal she said "I hear it's your anniversary, don't go away". In a few minutes she brought us a rather large strawberry short cake. It was delicious, the perfect end to a fine meal. It was on the house! We look forward to returning for another meal and perhaps a two night stay, as the hotel seems to be 19th century classic. All in all it was a great experience. I just stayed here for 3 nights and had a nice visit.. cute town, near beach, nice staff cute room, close to Door County for the drive up. I had a little issue with a noisy group shooting pool and playing music late but staff on duty took care of it. Maybe they could post a sign in the room that the pool room closed at say 10 pm on weeknights or just lock the door. As for the decor, I've noticed comments on here about it being outdated... that's the charm people! It's got a retro feel.. that's what I loved about it. We were there July 2017 for an evening meal. My wife, myself and our two boys. The menu says surf & turf but sorry-deep fried shrimp does not equal Surf. Surf is lobster, crab or king crab. The salad bar was very minimal but fresh. The meatball and pasta soup was good but the meatballs were exactly like IKEA meatballs- not freshly made. The Decor was from a different era but charming in it's respect and very clean. The bathrooms were elegant and very clean. The crabcake was a wonderful piece of breading but if you were expecting say a Maryland blue crab cake it was nothing of the sort. I had the salmon which would have been great but ruined by having sautéed onions put on top of it, what a horrible combination- you don't put lemon juice on steak, do you? My wife had the shrimp and lobster pieces in the fettuccine Alfredo. Wayyy too rich and saucy. The bread, served warm, was very good. The prices were reasonable, the service was excellent and for a small town it wasn't that bad. They need to rewrite their menu to be more modest and add a few more options. This review is for the restaurant not the hotel itself. We came here on a Friday night because we herd they had the best fish fry in town. Could be, because I have yet to find a knock your socks off fish fry in Algoma. We were a party of 4 with 2 kids. we got immediate seating in a medium sized dining room. The décor looked like it was the same décor as it was in the 1970s. The waitress was prompt and took our drink order as we were seated. The menu is modest with several steak selections and dinner entrees as well as seafood. We came for the fish fry so we ordered that. There was a salad bar included with the all you can eat fish fry. There was about 6 different selections. Perch, walleye, baked haddock, red fish, crab stir-fry with rice, and popcorn shrimp. there was another table with shrimp cocktail on it. The fish in the hot trays was ok, but nothing special. It may have been better if we ordered the fish from the menu and not from the hot tray. The breading was soggy and the baked haddock was dry requiring a lot of tartar sauce. The total for the buffet was $14.00 a person. For that price I expected better quality. We will take our quest for a great fish fry somewhere else. read more

I didn't eat here so I can't comment on the food or the bar. I stayed in the hotel for a night while in town on business. I had a room with 2 queen beds. It is in a historic downtown building and is the longest continually operated business in Kewaunee county. That should have told me something. The room was small. The beds were hard and squeaky. Not somewhere I would like to stay again if given the choice. read more

Staff was attentive and courteous. The building had character. The bar was friendly and the drinks were generous, well-made and a bargain. I had a delicious 'tapas' version of lasagna while my husband had seafood basket that was plentiful. Both entrees were hot and tasty. Our room, the Safari, was delightfully kitschy with gauze adornments and a dessert motif. The bath had been completely updated. While not perfect this establishment has heart and the staff is completely dedicated to service. Hotel Stebbins is now just "ho-hum" and there are better places to go for food, but the atmosphere is nice. The food used to be better but that seems to have changed in recent years, as evident of our latest visit. They are known for all-you-can eat fish frys on Friday evenings and offer a salad and soup bar with redfish and potatoes for $10.50. We had a party of ten individuals and most of us ordered the redfish special, but none of us asked for seconds on the redfish. The first batch was too "fishy" tasting, which is a shame. Hotel Stebbins used to be known for better quality. The salad and soup bar typically has a nice small selection. They always have food that appeals to the older-generations, such as pickled chicken gizzards and an assortment of other pickled food to eat with a salad, no no complaints about that. Even if you do not like the pickled food, there is a nice small selection to make a salad, plus crackers, pate and cheese. The soup they serve can be hit-or-miss. One week it could be excellent, another week it could be absolutely terrible. On our recent visit they served "carrot curry", and this was an example of a terribly made soup. We could choke down only a spoonful of it before our tastebuds were overwhelmed by the armpit taste of too much cumin. The biggest disappointment came when one member of our party ordered a "lite" meal and just wanted the soup & salad bar. One would think that a typical soup and salad bar cost for a restaurant of this type would have come to $6.95 - $7.95. Unfortunately, it was priced exactly $1.00 less than the redfish special (at a pricey $9.50). This just goes to show how little money they put toward their redfish special. Overall, the atmosphere is nice and friendly. The bar is a nice place to hang out prior to sitting down for a meal, as it is not too loud or crowded. The lobby is clean and well organized, with comfortable over-stuffed sofas to sit on. But if you're coming here for the food, you might want to look elsewhere until the quality improves. read more

Haters gonna hate. Never slept here, probably never will but hey it is what it is. I've sat in the bar for multiple drinks on multiple occasions so this is a review of the bar. The bar is kinda cool, classy in a Don Draper sort of way. Maybe Don wouldn't drink here but Dick would as it is more working man classy. But it is old and the prices ain't bad. So the town only has like a few places to drink at...this one is quiet and cheap, like a good Goma girl. read more

My husband had the Tuesday night Lobster special for $20. It was a nice big tail done to perfection with drawn butter, a potato, and vegetable. The dinners also included soup and salad bar with nice choices: patte', two different cheese spreads, fresh salad and fixings, potato salad, etc. All very good. I ordered stuffed shrimp which was excellent. For desert we had the red velvet cheese cake which was very good choice. And our waitress handled the entire room very handily without missing a beat. My stay at Hotel Stebbins. Great staff and a nice clean room. A great dinner with a salad bar with good variety. Spent the evening with a group of locals watching Wisconsin's Final Four game at the hotels bar after dinner. Kristine Ruehl the owner, bar tender, manager and hostess added to the evening with her fun spirit and out going nature. She is a bundle of energy and I wish her well in this business adventure. Stop by when your in the area for a drink and dinner from their great menu ranging from steaks to frog legs to a duck dinner along with a variety of seafood. I had the shrimp platter with the shrimp fixed four different ways. If your in the area stay a night or two. It is a well restored 1850's/1905 hotel redone with the nice period decor and up to date features. Check out the lobby phone booth. The pool table and game room. Notes on other comments: I do not eat fish fries unless it is lake perch as other can be 'fishy" tasting. My bed was fine. I am 70 years old and have had a full knee replacement and I handled the stairs. Remember the main part was built in 1905. I paid $60.00 for the night. Cheaper than a Hotel 8 with a lot more charm. My toilet seat had a cover but the seat was small. Most old hotel rooms are small unless you are staying at the Drake in downtown Chicago for $250.00 a night for a room with one bed. Remember from its beginning on New Year's Eve 1920 to today, The Drake Hotel has defined elegance and hospitality. Hotel Stebbins is in a small town and was build for travels and sales men of the period. That is why I stayed so I could get the flavor of the period and place it was build in. Have been coming to this place for years and its such a great hotel. The food is great and salad is fresh. The rooms are very roomy and certain rooms come with a mini fridge and a microwave both which are very useful and nice to have around. The bar serves very good cocktails and even has a kiddy cocktail for the little ones. (My kids favorite drink) Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere, can't wait to stay again! read more

Our room was very nicely appointed, clean and very quiet. Their dining room is spacious and has a great selection. The servers are very nice and personable. Cocktails in the lounge are very reasonably priced. Bartenders are great. Christine is a great proprietor. They allow dogs. Ours was treated like a king. Everyone connected with this place is a team player from the owner to the people who do the cleaning. It's so refreshing to be at a place where the help enjoys their job. The meal just didn't make it. We loved the room and location and will definitely be back. One hours drive to Green Bay and anywhere you want to go in Door County. Less than two blocks from a dozen great places: beach boardwalk, microbrewery, five star dive ( LOL), an amazing coffee cafe, fishing, antiques, wine tasting, and more. . I am not kidding it is in the middle of all of it. Back to the restaurant, it is unfortunate they were overwhelmed that evening. The hearty dinner would have been enjoyed if we did not have to wait an hour for our food. They just need to be honest with people and let them know what they can expect to wait. . Stayed two nights in the "safari" room. No elevator or skycaps, carried luggage up flight and a half. We managed, older folks, maybe a challenge. Room was small but adequate. Lighting was poor, one small table lamp and the overhead. Bedside tables tiny, but again, adequate. Bed was very comfy, we had a king. Brought my own pillow, but my husband didn't complain, so theirs must have been ok. Bathroom was small, door didn't close properly, a toilet seat cover would've added workspace as well as eliminated risk of toiletries ending up in the bowl if accidentally knocked from one small shelf above. Shower was very good, towels on the other hand were pathetically thin and small. In this age of Marshall's and Target, how much of a hardship would it be to provide nice thirsty towels? The water was heavy on minerals, bothered my husband. Didn't have a meal, but had an excellent Manhattan/rocks at the bar. For half the price, would've been happy here. For the $155 per night we paid, all my comments shouldn't be. Place has potential, needs more attention to detail. As it is, way too expensive. read more

We stayed at the hotel for one night while passing through the area. Nice location, you can easily walk to the beach, to Ahnapee Brewery's tasting room, and to a few restaurants- I'd seriously recommend Skaliwags (not kidding, awesome food). The hotel building is... old. We picked the room with king bed and it's on 1st floor which is weird because it's the only guest room on 1st along with the main dining room, bar, and a room with a pool table. They were careful to describe this. Bed was comfortable and room was clean, bedding was puffy stuff for your home and I just don't think it could get laundered enough for my taste - so take that off the bed. Our room was somewhere between wildly outdated and eclectic. But mostly wildly outdated, painted paneling on the walls and a drop ceiling and a really tiny / loud window A/C unit. Would I stay here again? Maybe?? Did it work well for one night? Sure. Staff at check-in were great, very nice. read more

A group of 14 of us came in after a family members memorial. It was after 8 pm. Only one other table there. Menu was very small. I ordered a burger. The bun was too small for the meat patty and was very hard. The same was said by the others who had ordered the same thing. I cannot speak for everyone but we have visited the Stebbins hotel every year for about 6 years. We stay there, eat there, and we truly enjoy ourselves. The people are friendly and helpful. The hotel is clean and well kept. The food is excellent. Could not ask for more. We will be back for sure. read more

A place so quaint and abounds in atmosphere with some of the best food you will find in the area. I have been staying there pre-the new mgmt. and staff. Since Ms. R and staff took over it has improved ten fold from what was "okay" before to now the best place to stay in the area. No other place where you can eat, drink, and sleep all in the same building, and only 2 blocks from the lake and Winery... and laundry... and Brewery... In 5 yrs I have only had 1 bad steak. She took it off my bill. With appreciation from me because I already broke the cardinal rule of dinning. Do Not fill up on the salad bar. But it's hard to stay away from as are their soup(s).. dips, and warm bread. RE: the rooms. Never a complaint from me, and I can speak my mind if needed. Not going to tell you my fav. room # as I re-book it every year.. RE: the bar. also great with great TV placement for games... finish drinking and walk to your room.. I have stayed at other places near by when Stebbins is booked and none compare to the whole experience.. flying solo or with a partner. Hence the Woohoo!
