A friend and I stayed at the Hotel Stadt Kufstein one weekend for a ski trip at nearby Kitzbühel. Unlike the ski-in-ski-out hotels at 400 Euro per night and higher, the Hotel Stadt Kufstein was more like 150 Euro per night, and is a short 20-minute drive from the SkiWelt area, and maybe 40 minutes from Kitzbühel.
First of all, the town of Kufstein is very cute and picturesque. It has a medieval history, and more recently a big cement industry. The hotel is located in the middle of downtown, in a new building that is surrounded by older buildings. We parked on the street within a block of the hotel both nights, which was easy (although they also have an indoor parking garage available for a fee).
The staff at the reception desk was very friendly when we checked in, and struggled cordially through our elementary German (and helped out in English when we needed it). The room itself was clean, well-organized, and totally adequate. Nothing extravagant, but also not shabby or uncared for. The bathroom feels quite high-end in particular.
For the few hours that we spent in the hotel, I can recommend the buffet breakfast (5 Euro per person), which has all kinds of breads, pastries, müsli, fruit, meats, cheeses, eggs, juice, and coffee - the full Austrian breakfast experience. The other exceptional part of the hotel is the spa (or "Wellness" auf Deutsch), which has a couple of saunas, a steam room, some showers, and a few lounges for relaxing. Again, nothing over-the-top, but all very high quality and well taken care of.
Staying slopeside is always nice if you can manage it, but if you can't, the Hotel Stadt Kufstein is a great alternative. read more
