I stayed here last year on a work trip to Switzerland. I actually had meetings in St. Gallen, but there was no hotel availability, so I stayed in Zuerich instead. This turned out very well because I could do some sightseeing in the city as well.
This hotel still had availability when I booked online just two weeks before I wanted to check in, and it was rated pretty highly on trip adviser. I chose it primarily for the location- directly in the heart of the old town of Zuerich. I was so happy I chose it when I arrived! It's a bit of a hike from the train station (its much easier to take a tram if you have luggage), but it is tucked away on a small alley directly off the main street. You can walk less than 2 minutes from the front door and you are next to the river.
The front desk staff was not overly friendly, but they were not rude. The hotel itself is pretty narrow, so there's not much of a lobby, and the breakfast room is actually on the second floor. The breakfast is amazing- the best continental breakfast I've ever had at a hotel, and I stayed in a chateau in the Loire Valley the previous week. The quality of the bread was great, the coffee was good, with steamed milk available, and there was a large variety of sausage, cheeses, and spreads. I would stay here again just for the breakfast!
I stayed in a double room, which was surprisingly large. It was not particularly fancy (tiled floor, sparsely decorated), but it the bed was comfortable and it was very clean. Note that the buildings in this area are very close together, so if you have your window open, you will hear people in the next building or on the street. I'm not sensitive to noise, but if you are a very light sleeper, you will definitely want to bring ear plugs.
Hotel Roessli is not inexpensive, but considering it is in Zuerich, it is a good value. Everything is expensive in Switzerland! read more
