Louis R loves superstar treatment at hotels...in Sweden. This spot is money. From the hotel decor to the promptness of staff to the cleanliness of rooms to the stylish bar to the fresh outdoor patio on the 2nd floor facing the quaint park across the street...money. So money. It is located next to Old town, and the hip restaurant-laden side streets and boutique stores where locals shop...not IKEA. Be like Louis R, stay in a superstar hotel in Sweden.

During our recent visit to Stockholm, my husband and I stayed at Hotel Rival and enjoyed it so much that when we were supposed to move to a second hotel we reserved, we canceled the reservations so we could stay at the Rival for the remainder of our time in Sweden. We did not regret the decision. Located in the trendy but quiet area of Mariatorget, the hotel is situated with close access to the metro station, wonderful restaurants, great cafes, bakeries, and other points of interest. We appreciated the neighborhood feel of the general area and how quiet it was at night. Our room was well-appointed and fairly spacious with beautiful views of the courtyard and the roofs the nearby buildings (I believe we stayed in room 609). Each room is outfitted with a teddy bear whose whimsical presence will greet you when you enter. There is a mini bar, ironing board, blow dryer, wifi, and other basic amenities you would find in any and all hotel rooms. If you need access to a teapot or a computer, there is a coffee station and a small business center on the 4th floor. Depending on the type of room you stay in, breakfast is included which I would encourage you to take advantage of as the food is absolutely delicious. It is served from 7-11 a.m. daily. It is a buffet but there is a menu you can order from free of charge and the pancakes from that menu are not to be missed. The service at the Rival was some of the best we've experienced on our travels. Everyone was so friendly and went out of their ways to make sure we were satisfied with our experience there. The concierge, Sean, was especially helpful in pointing out different restaurants, giving us directions on how to get to the hotel via the airport train, and any other questions we had. The blog he maintains is also a great source to look into before you arrive- http://stockholmtourist.blogspot.ca/. Overall I couldn't recommend the Rival more. It was located in an area that was easy access to other parts of the city, the customer service was excellent, and the rooms were well laid out and met all our needs. And again, don't miss out on breakfast and those pancakes should you choose to dine there in the morning!

Hotel Rival is located in Mariatorget in Södermalm. Södermalm used to be the old poor working class hoods but have now turned into a uber trendy area. Södermalm is full of restaurants and a busy nightlife. Hotel Rival is a boutique hotel where a lot of effort has been put on the design of the rooms. Or lets say, the signature rooms. The standard rooms, at a boutique price level, are not worth the price, and they are not suited for business travellers e.g no hairdryer, no bodylotion or other amenities that you normally would find, no kettle in the room, instead you have go to the coffee/tea centre on the 4th floor. (The whole idea with an in room kettle is that you do not have to leave the room.) So, if you are in Stockholm for a holiday Hotel Rival is a really good place to stay at in a busy area of Stockholm. Just remember to spend some extra money and upgrade your room.

The rooms are plenty spacious for one person especially if you are traveling on business. My room had good wifi and a great shower (rain fall shower head!). My room is not large, but very comfortable as I plan to be out more than I'm in the room. My only two complaints are there is no refrigerator in the room, and there's no ice machine on each floor. This is important if you are someone who must keep items cold....medicine and infant formula are two examples that come to mind. I love public transport in Stockholm, so I decided to check out the ease of use from this hotel, and I wasn't disappointed. The tram stops in the center traffic island steps from the front door of the hotel! With one stop on tram, I had access to several metro lines to venture around the city very easily. I plan to eat breakfast away from the hotel on tomorrow, but I will try the breakfast before my stay ends. Breakfast is only 125 SEK (about $12.50 at the time of this review) if you book on a platform such as Expedia that offers a rate without breakfast. It is only my first night, but I am impressed and I recommend this establishment so long as having a refrigerator is not a deal-breaker for you.

The entry way to the hotel is stunning with a sweeping circular staircase, which is dramatic, but perhaps a bit scary for some people. large windows and a modern appearance made for an inviting welcome. As impressed as I was with the lobby, I was more impressed with the actual room, which was spacious and actually had room to unpack and store items. I loved the wood design (see photos) and the overall appearance of the room looked very Scandinavian. As noted by other reviewers, there is a hidden closet near the bathroom (which is also a bit hidden). The door swings out to reveal a hanging closet and a couple of storage drawers). The location of the hotel is perfect because it's very near the waterfront and very close to the old city. The access to restaurants and shops is close enough that you can walk anywhere. The included breakfast buffet was excellent with an egg station that made some of the best omelets I've ever tasted. I have nothing but good things to say about this hotel.

Nestled near the Slussen metro station, the hotel offers stunning views of Gamla Stan and Riddarfjärden, making it a perfect spot for exploring Stockholm's historic charm and Södermalm's trendy scene. Check-in was smooth, with the staff warmly acknowledging my Diamond status. The room was spacious, modern, and impeccably clean, with a comfy bed and those iconic floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing the waterfront. But let's talk about the design since nothing in this hotel is quite what you'd expect! Downstairs, the lobby and public areas are a maze of curves, with hardly a straight line in sight. It's like walking through a piece of modern art, which adds a fun, quirky charm to the experience. The room itself felt like a Jenga puzzle brought to life. The closets had an unusual, almost playful layout that made unpacking an adventure. The bathroom was anything but boring as its bold, unconventional design stood out with creative fixtures and a layout that kept things interesting. While the quirky aesthetics were memorable, they might not suit everyone's taste if you prefer straightforward functionality. The Diamond breakfast was a highlight, served in a bright space with a jaw-dropping view of the water and Gamla Stan. The buffet was fantastic, offering everything from fresh pastries and fruits to hot dishes and Swedish specialties like herring. The executive lounge, another great perk for those with access, was a stylish haven with tasty snacks, drinks, and that same gorgeous view. It was perfect for unwinding or catching up on work. The bar was a great spot for an evening drink, and the hotel's location made exploring nearby attractions a breeze. My only minor gripe was occasional Wi-Fi hiccups, but they didn't overshadow the stay. The gym and sauna looked nice, though I didn't get a chance to use them. For Hilton Diamond members, the breakfast and lounge perks elevate this hotel, and its bold design adds character you won't forget. The Hilton Stockholm Slussen is a fantastic choice for a unique, comfortable stay just be ready for some architectural surprises! I'd recommend it and would return, though I docked a star for the slightly impractical room layout.

The hotel is clean, the rooms are comfortable, and the breakfast spread is pretty amazing. Huge shout out to Gigi for being absolutely incredible - she was super friendly and warm as soon as she greeted me to check me in. The Cafe in the hotel was fantastic and convenient and offered a wonderful breakfast. The staff were also very kind. What we didn't love: apartment 5 was on the first floor and was very very loud. We heard delivery trucks coming in as early as 4:30 in the morning every day. We heard Tour groups walking right by our window every day at all hours of the day. If we opened the windows, the noise was very very loud. There was also a clock from the Stockholm church that rang 24 hours a day every 15 minutes. The bed in the apartment was two small Narrow beds pushed together. Unfortunately the shower did not drain and caused a lot of flooding in the bathroom every time we bathed. Anytime we used the bathroom automatic lights would turn on which would light up the entire apartment because there was glass around the bathroom near the ceiling. There was no way to control this. The lights would stay on for five minutes. There was a smell in the apartment that was similar to kitty litter which we were told was likely from the drains in the sink. Lastly a fire alarm went off one morning time is the fire alarm go off at 4:30am---we didn't hear this initially because we had earplugs on. Once we heard it we called the front desk staff and sadly they didn't answer---prompting us to get dressed and run across the street to notify them. One of the perils of wearing earplugs so you can sleep!! If you are assigned to apartment 5 we recommend ear plugs and a sleep mask over your eyes any time you attempt to sleep, flipflops for the shower as you will be soaked in water on the floor, a candle to freshen up the smell in the unit, and fans to try and remove the smell from the unit. This unit may be ideal for someone hard of hearing or deaf. Enjoy!!
