we found a fabulous deal on expedia.com for a one nite stay at €54 (approx $72). when we arrived, early in the morning from the train station, there was no one at the front desk to let us in, so we went to the cafe next door for some breakfast.
an hour or so later, we returned, and fortunately, someone was at the front desk. although she found our reservation, she told us that the hotel was overbooked for this day and there were no vacancies. how could this have happened considering we pre-paid with credit card a few months back???? fortunately, she was able to find us a room at a nearby hotel and told us that we just have to show the manager the receipt that she printed out and he would allow us to stay there.
i asked two questions: 1) how far is the other hotel (in kilometres) and 2) would we have to pay a surcharge since it is a different hotel with a last minute booking? the answers? 1) 3 minute walk (only a couple of blocks) and 2) no surcharge, room rate is the same since it was their fault not ours.
i took the receipt, and my husband and i set out to find the new/replacement hotel, and fortunately, the concierge was correct, it was very close by and we did not have to pay any additional fees. it was definitely an inconvenience to not be able to stay at the hotel we originally booked, but i was glad that they found us a suitable replacement right away. read more
