05/(05-06)/23 - Granada Spain - Hotel Alhambra Palace. WOW we absolutely loved it. The Hotel Alhambra Palace sits @ the top of the mountain very close to the world heritage Alhambra Palace. This hotel is absolutely stunning from the moment you walk in. From our third floor room in a corner suite you can see the city of Granada below. This hotel is very heavily influenced by the Moors that ruled Spain & Portugal Moors Ruled Spain and Portugal for 754 Years Before The Collapse of The Mali Empire Here are some facts about the Moors in Europe: The Moors Introduced Numerous New Fruits and Vegetables to Europe. The Moors introduced a variety of fruits and vegetables that were previously unknown in both Spain and Europe, and thus deemed exotic novelties. These items included peaches, lemons, oranges, saffron, cotton, rice, silk, sugar cane, apricots, figs, dates, pomegranates and many others. Although commonplace today, during the Middle Ages these items were almost alien to the Spanish. Today, centuries later, they have become staples of Spanish production and diet. The Moors Were Several Steps Ahead of Medieval Europe. At the time of their conquest of the Iberian Peninsula , the advanced civilization of the Arabs was renowned for its architecture, science, mathematics and exploration. Upon their arrival in Spain, the Moors introduced architectural techniques that amazed European stonemasons. One of the most impressive examples of Moorish architecture is the Alhambra, a palace complex and fortress located in Granada, Spain. Construction began in 1238, and it surpassed any similar palace in grandeur and beauty. Today, it remains one of the best-preserved palaces of the Islamic world. The Moors Were Very Strict About Their Hygiene. Education Was Very Important to the Moors. Education was of utmost importance to the Moors, who ensured that it was universally available to all within their realm. This stood in stark contrast to medieval Europe, where 90% of the population remained illiterate, and education was reserved for only the wealthiest nobles and clergy. In fact, there were even some European Kings who could not read or write. The Moors established 17 great universities in Spain, located in cities such as Cordoba, Malaga, Granada, Seville, Toledo and Almeria, among others.

The best, most palatial & exquisite hotel! I stayed at this hotel 25 years ago when I was twenty one years old and traveling with my family. I almost cried when we pulled up to the entrance with my husband and three kids a few nights ago, 25 years after my first stay. I had no idea we were staying at the same hotel!. Our wonderful travel agent through Spain Top booked our stay so this was a complete surprise. The glamour and elegance it possessed back then still prevails today. This hotel is THE EPITOME OF WHAT A FIVE STAR HOTEL should be. From the first class service of the INCREDIBLE STAFF to the gorgeous rooms to the grand amenities and stateliness this hotel exemplifies CLASS. Every staff member we encountered was INCREDIBLE and went over and beyond to take care of us and make sure our stay was perfection. The lovely hostess who welcomed us at breakfast each morning has been there for 31 years, a true testament to this hotel's magnificence. I wouldn't stay at any other hotel in Alhambra. If you want a hotel with unmatched charm, history, grandeur, spacious rooms, comfort and first class service look no further!!!!!

    Welcome to the palace

Note: this is the listing for the Alhambra Palace HOTEL-NOT THE MONUMENT We stayed at the Alhambra Palace hotel for two nights on a short visit to Granada as part of a two-week trip to Spain. We booked a "junior suite" room and stayed for two night in mid April. We've stayed in dozens of luxury hotel all over the world and based on our experience THIS IS NO 5-star hotel. BUT HEY, the Alhambra and Generalife (gardens) are probably on you bucket list and really the only reason to visit Granada, so you might as well stay close to the monument. The VAST MAJORITY of visitors to Granada stay ONE NIGHT. MY ADVICE: book the cheapest room and set your expectations low. The two best features to this hotel are the moorish style architecture and proximity to the Alhambra (across the street). I must admit I had high hopes based on the website but was VERY underwhelmed when shown to our room on floor -2 (yes that is minus 2) room 702. (There are 4 floors up and 2 below the lobby level-thinking we were maybe punished for not booking direct on hotel website. NOTE: we met another couple, from Scotland who also booked a Junior suite through booking.com and were also given a crummy room.) Pros: -adjacent to the Alhambra - 5 min walk. -great views from the room of the city -beautiful lobby -nice view from the bar overlooking the city Cons: -low quality and over priced food -40€ for two glasses of wine and a cheese plate -finicky Wi-Fi-difficult getting it to connect-I gave up and used my cell phone data package for most of the stay -not terribly noise-proof - fair amount of noise from above, doors slamming in hallways and water gurgling in the walls definitely-NOT soundproof as stated on booking website -tiny, cramped outdated bathroom in room 702-NOTHING LIKE THE MODERN up to date ones shown on their website-bordering on false advertising - bath was barely 6 feet wide and in their "renovation" they seemed to have added frosted glass panels to wall off the toilet-making a small room even smaller-toilet area similar to space on an airplane -English skills of waiters (very limited) and front desk (just ok) based on my experience -NOT A 5* or luxury hotel based on our two night stay in room 702 -front desk staff cold and NOT AT ALL eager to help guests or be at all friendly. Limited assistance from the concierge-not sure they even really had one. I'm sure once I post this there will be some apologetic response from the manager saying that's not the service they strive for, etc. etc since they know 99% of their guests will visit Granada for a day or two in a lifetime, they have nothing to lose by sounding apologetic. My advice-IF YOU STAY here, INSIST on a room matching the premium price you paid. Don't be like us here venting after the fact. OR just suck it up and accept that this is a 5-star tourist trap.

A cockroach at the bathroom door. Very interesting.

It has a cozy patio garden which provides a very to welcoming atmosphere for you to relax. First of all, it took a long time after we sat down before a staff came over to take our order. I do not blame them though because they were extremely busy. It was a fully restaurant but only 2 staff taking order, greeting customers and cleaning up after customers left. The food also took a long time to get to our table. We were worried a bit because we had a strict time to reach the Nasird Palaces and it was cutting close. The dishes tasted good but they were slightly warm, not cold but not hot either. For these type of dishes I would have expected them to be hot instead. Overall I think this is an alright place to eat. On the other hand though, your options are really limited anyways so maybe this place isn't so bad.

The restaurant in the little inner courtyard was beautiful, shaded and romantic and offered a respite from the withering sun. Touristy, unavoidable. The dishes were on the generous side, so don't make the mistake that we did by ordering so much. A few appetizers to share and an entree each would be to much food. The restaurant was already busy at 1:30pm so it depends on when you arrive. The seating was spaced out so you don't feel crowded. The waiters were friendly and soft, pleasant music played in the background. Our food came relatively quickly, given the fact that the restaurant was full. In conclusion, Hotel America is a quaint eatery under a canopy of leaves that would leave any tired tourist satisfied.

David, a front desk attendant, was super friendly and gave us super helpful recommendations for modes of transportation, restaurants, and other activities. And he was just always warm, kind, and patient with our many requests. Juan, one of the waiters during breakfast time, was always so patient and timely with our requests. We kind of felt we established relationships with the staff at the end. The hotel is beautiful. You feel like you are in Spain in the hotel. The plaza is so peaceful to have a meal or just to relax. The are several beautiful rooms and the hotel has a interesting history. The rooms are comfortable. I liked the bathroom because it's spacious and the bed was super comfortable. The only thing to consider is that only one hotel room has an outdoor space. We had dinner and breakfast. The dinner was good. Food was somewhat flavorful but again, the ambiance is fantastic and relaxing. Service was warm, patient, and timely. This is one of the few breakfast places nearby that provides comprehensive choices and an American style breakfast. The breakfast is tasty. The price includes both a buffet and menu choices. The only slight concern is the breakfast is approximately $30 per person which is very expensive compared to other options in the area and outside the area. I strongly recommend for any visitor to Granada to consider this hotel.

We arrived before our room was ready, so we were able to leave our luggage and come back. Before we left, the lady at the front desk went over the map with us in great detail, pointing things out, showing us where to catch the bus, and so on. She also showed us to the 'living room' on the fifth floor, which has some couches, tables and magazines. But the highlight is the patio, which has a view over the city facing the Alhambra. There are also a few tables and chairs outside, so it would be a great place to read or catch up on writing in your travel journal, or just to relax. Our room was big, our bed was big, and our bathroom was big. We both had a good sleep that night. We paid in advance when we booked and got 15% off the room. We had to leave early in the morning before breakfast started, but they do offer it for 6,95 EUR per person. Like I said, we were only in Granada for one night, but the location seemed great and quite it would be quite easy to get anywhere you wanted to, or there is lots to do in that area as well. The reception staff also ordered a cab for us in the evening to take us to the airport the next morning. The only negative about that was, as she was telling us our options, she said the aiport bus took 45 minutes, and a cab also took 45 minutes. In reality the cab only took 15 minutes, so we could have gotten that little bit of extra sleep in the morning!

We got interconnecting rooms, which are different from how I think of connecting rooms. Our rooms shared a short hallway, and both the hallway door and the individual rooms used the same lock. We were given two keycards, both of which were needed to keep the electricity on in the rooms. As our kids are young, this was not ideal, as it was too easy for someone to get locked out of a room. This would be a better set up for families with older kids or couples traveling together. The hotel was clean and modern. There's a very decent gastropub in the lobby. Our room came with daily breakfast, and we thought the breakfast was very good. Eggs and pancakes to order, pretty extensive buffet including serrano ham and pate, fresh honeycomb, decent fresh fruit options, churros, and fresh squeezed orange juice. The kids enjoyed all three morning breakfasts. The hotel location is within a 10-20 minute walk of pretty much anything you'd want to see in Granada (although the walk to the Alhambra would be steep), but there's also a taxi queue two blocks away if you're feeling lazy.

A careful renovation of an old palace has crafted a charming estate with picturesque balconies, stately fountains, and elegant furnishings, though its amenities are modern, sleek, and state-of-the-art. We checked into Hospes Palacio de Los Patos on a Thursday afternoon for our one-night stay - the lobby was quiet, and we were immediately greeted by the hotel's concierge, who spoke fluent English as well as Spanish. She pointed out some of the city's popular tourist attractions (namely la Alhambra and the Albaicín neighborhood), and then guided us to our rooms, which were located in a separate building. You can either take an elevator down and walk underground through a tunnel beneath the two buildings, or walk through an outdoor plaza with a bar to access the hotel's restaurant and elevators to the rooms. We had booked two rooms - one with a queen-sized bed, and another with two full-sized beds. The rooms are bright with natural light and have large windows overlooking the plaza area between the buildings. Everything is very modern, but we found that some of the room's amenities prioritized style over substance - for example, the showers were beautiful, but didn't drain well, as there's no slope for the water to drain into, the bathtubs were oddly shaped and not very functional, and the state-of-the-art door locking system didn't always work, leaving us locked out of our rooms on multiple occasions. However, the complimentary white wine, chocolates, and mixed nuts we were provided were a plus! We didn't eat at the hotel restaurant, but it looks like an upscale option with a wide variety of dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as room service. You also receive a complimentary hour's use of their spa/sauna - I didn't take advantage of this, though the rest of my family members said that it was quite luxurious! Additionally, when our flight to Barcelona was canceled before we checked out, we were very impressed with how our concierge booked us on a train to Barcelona within fifteen minutes. We were impressed with how efficient and professional she was! Apart from the minor technical difficulties and the fact that it's definitely on the pricier side, we really enjoyed our stay at Hospes Palacio de Los Patos - the building is beautiful and in a great location, service is absolutely stellar, and I would say that it's worth the splurge if you're looking for an upscale hotel in the area.
