The solo violinist and the female opera singer were true standouts. Their performances felt like pure magic and were among the highlights of the night. The Vienna Mozart Orchestra appeared in beautiful 18th-century period costumes, bringing the music and atmosphere of Mozart's era vividly to life. A truly unforgettable experience and one I would highly recommend to anyone visiting Vienna.

At first there was the idea of a coffee shop with "Jazz from the can". Together with Mr. Zvala, an internally well-known Jazz musician from Switzerland and professional member of the board of directors - department Jazz of the conservatory of the private university of Vienna the idea was developed to turn the location into a scene location with life-Jazz who also brought the first musicians to the ZWE. The location survived quite eventful times when we took over. With a lot of love, heart, patience and effort we turned it into what it really is today, an already very well-known Jazz basement and meeting point for musicians. For me it is something like a living room. The slipper idea was born - regular, plain simple slippers with the main visitors name on them and of course, especially for ZWE! - lots of people liked that idea. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays there are Jam-Sessions. Thus lots of musicians try out whatever is possible and liked. A location for young and old. This year, we created for the first time a CD, the ""ZWE Summer Sessions" that is presented on Tuesday, the 30th of August, 2011 at the ZWE. Jazz because I have always been fascinated by Jazz. Sometime ago I met Joe Zawinul's son, Anthony. Somehow you are reminiscent of Joe Zawinul, did you know him? Yes, I knew him personally, but only met seldom. 2) Do the instruments belong to the location? The piano is mine, some pieces are items on loan which is very practical and some belong to the musicians. 3) Have you got any visitors from the surrounding of the ZWE? Not really, but sometimes Mr. Wolfgang Katzer, very well-known as "Bamschabel" . What about the noise disturbance, because this is kind of right in the middle of a living environment and there are not many shops, restaurants, etc. around here? We are on good terms with everybody around here and have come to agreements with them concerning this issue. The Big Band, consisting of 17 men including the female singer was a great success and did not disturb anyone; on the contrary, it was very well appreciated by the people around us. Our location has also got a special social character. At Christmas we set up a Christmas tree and offer to lonely people and everybody who likes it a special Christmas atmosphere, no presents of course, but a really homelike atmosphere. Feel like at home, but don't behave like it. 4) What was your best experience? 2010 my wife presented me with Mr. Heli Deinboek, he came to play for us- that was a real highlight. There are so many Austrian musicians. We invite both, the well-known ones as well as the unknown ones, because we are of the opinion, that also young people should get a chance. Young musicians need the contact with the audience and also have to learn how to deal with criticism. At the conservatory the selection is quite hard, out of 400 only 20 are accepted. 5) What was your biggest challenge? November 2010, there was still a drive where Mrs. Sandra Rose had her events. Her visitors came to our location afterwards. It was hard to make up for that loss. "Donaukanal" a big competitor? - No, the opposite is the case. Competition stimulates the business. An access from our side of the "Donaukanal" would be great. But we manage. 6) What advice would you give to today's young people? You have to work hard yourself, in order to develop something and, especially to keep it alive later on. Without any education there is nothing. Attend school, learn something at first, get the right abilities, have a look into the business - the business "in action" and then go into business for yourself. Party is good, but party also has to be organized, but therefore you also have to work. Gastronomy is always associated with lots of work, many working hours, less money? It pays off, but first there is hard work. Lots of people open a business and buy immediately a Mercedes. That does not work. Most of the things that you can buy from insolvencies come from gastronomy. No matter what business you open, you have to keep your money together. 7) Would you change anything or open the business again? No, that's my life. "Moaning is the business man's greeting". Its a pretty ok place to go but is a little smallish for so many hipster/rocker/alternies. The music was okish and I guess it would be much better with a live band. The barmaid at the entrance bar is clearly in the wrong job as she was unfriendly, grumpy and rude and the barmaid at the back bar was a little loony. She had the prices of the most popular drinks written on her hands and arms and would flash the prices whenever you ordered. There is a non smoking area towards the back by the dance floor but I honestly didn't notice we were in it as the whole place was fairly smoke free. (unlike what some of the other reviewers say.) Overall its not the worst place to go but not the best either...

When the bartender at a 5-star hotel refers you to another bar, you know that it must be something…read morespecial. That's how I came upon Nightfly's. While staying at the Le Meridien, I wandered into the hotel's bar and asked for a Sazerac, and the bartender got a wistful look and smile and said that he didn't have all the makings of it, but he knew where I could go to find a true cocktail lounge. I wandered in on a cold and rainy night, and sat down at the bar. I asked the bartender if he had absinthe for a Sazerac, and told him about Silver Bar and Keita. He had a chuckle, and said that he knew Keita and respected his opinion, but that he made all the classics. As there were only a few other patrons, we had a chance to speak at length, and I soon learned that the bartender was actually Gerhard, the owner. For nearly 24 years, Gerhard has run this small temple to mixology, and he has stocked it with the finest of what the world has to offer. In particular the rums and whisk(e)ys span the world and the decades, with vintages I've never seen before (like a 25-year old Edmund Dantes Havana Club). In terms of variety, Nightfly's is maybe second only to The Brandy Library in New York City, but in a much more intimate environment. The space is dark and feels like you're walking into someone's den or study. The bar itself is underground, and the staircase leading you in is lined with boxes and bottles of glorious spirits that have been enjoyed by prior guests. The main seating area will be right in front of you, with small tables perfect for couples or small groups. To the right is the small bar, with room enough for 6 or so, and just past the bar is a sealed non-smoking room. Yup - Nightfly's is smoker-friendly, and you can either bring your own cigarettes, cigars, vape, or select from Gerhard's great stock of cigars for sale. If you sit at the bar, you can enjoy both Gerhard's company as well as watch the man at work. Each drink is made precisely, and will be mixed while the glass in which it is served is cooled down with ice cubes that are carefully drained so that you're never getting excess water in your cocktail. After each drink is made, Gerhard hands his tools off to his talented apprentice, who serves as both waiter in the main room as well as barback. Each shaker, blender, and stirrer is cleaned within minutes of being used behind the bar, and prepared for the next round. It's fast, efficient, and a marvel to watch. In my few days in Vienna, I managed to make it here twice regretting only that it could not be more. If you only have one evening for a well-made cocktail or top-shelf whisk(e)y or rum, Nightfly's is where you should go. If you actually live in Vienna, well then I can only congratulate you for being so fortunate as to come here whenever you wish. I wish Gerhard many more years behind the bar, and look forward to enjoying his craft again next time I'm in Vienna.

At the Kursalon, I understood what Vienna is about...it's glorious culture of music that spanned centuries is being performed on this stage for the audience to experience it's notes that stirs your emotion. It's spiritual as I felt a connection to the past, transported by the performance on stage. I fell in love with Vienna.

Disclaimer: I'm not heavy into opera or know a whole lot about them. However, this place was a WOW moment. Being in Vienna, the most incredible, historical, full of life, music and character, city in the world - a visit to the Opera House was needed. We are so glad we did! They have all kind of seat selections, balcony, floor and even standing for a more budget friendly approach. Our little balcony section was awesome though it had a heavily blocked view we were able to hear everything so clearly plus we had the little screens where you can follow along with the vocals. It was an unforgettable experience and so worth it if you're in Vienna visiting. You can also book tours and learn all about the history of the opera house which I think would be fascinating to learn.

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.

It was a little frustrating because the tickets had "musikverian" in all caps but the concert was actually in the konzerthsus down the street. Our uber was still outside when we realized the mistake so we hopped in and were at the correct hall in under 5 min. There were multiple performances going on at once and we accidentally got ushered into the wrong area. If you don't speak German give yourself plenty of time to find the correct hall. The concert we saw was open seating with no bad seat in the house. The room was small enough that you could see all the musicians very well. There was a brief intermission which served drinks and lite snacks. The program was one euro. Highly recommend so that you can follow along!
