This hotel has the potential to be great, but right now I don't feel it's quite managing to fulfil it. The location is really convenient for the U Bahn, or underground as we call it in London and we had no problem getting around while we were in town. You can walk from the station at Alser Strasse in less than 5 minutes. Breakfast was above average, a good spread of pretty much everything you could imagine on a breakfast menu, they even serve sparkling wine. It's buffet service but it was never overly busy during our stay. On the Saturday morning we were treated to a pair of violinists playing for us as we ate, and very good they were too. The staff on reception were courteous and helpful and all spoke impeccable English, which is good as my German only extends to useful phrases like "Where is the youth hostel?" So far so good, right? So why have I only given them 3 stars? The room. The room was tatty, the hallways leading to the room were tatty. We were on the top floor and the higher you went it seemed that the worse the state of repair got. There are gouges in the walls and doors, torn wallpaper and general signs that the place really needs a bit of love. The second thing which I didn't like was you have to pay for WiFi, this really annoys me in hotels. I expect to have free internet, if you want more money put your room rate up... Anyway, don't get me started on that or I'll never stop typing. There are signs up which say they are in the process of carrying out improvements to the hotel, and once they get all the rooms up to the same standard as you experience when you walk into the lobby it will be a wonderful place to stay. Right now it's good if you just want a cheap place to sleep but don't expect to be wowed with it. read more

Checked in to the BHD for a 3 day stay in Vienna. The hotel is a boutique hotel currently going through some updating with a location right off the 44 line. Miryam and Mary greeted us warmly upon check in and toasted our arrival with a glass of sparkling! While husband got the key and info from Mary, Miryam pointed out the sites, how to use the transportation system and recommended places to eat. As is with any boutique hotel the rooms were modern and even had a sound system and iPhone for you to use while out so you don't pay roaming charges. Going through a remodel is tough, some noise during the day but as evening approached it was quiet. 24hr bar and dining in the lobby with buffet breakfast you can add on. Okay the photos of this hotel online are totally misleading. Essentially they make you think that the rooms have been remodeled recently. That is certainly not the case- there are signs everywhere saying that they are remodeling. We had a tiny room with a double bed. The bathroom was literally the size of a cruise ship bathroom. The key to get into your room is an actual key- not a key card. You have to lock yourself in the room with your key after you enter, seems to me like a major fire hazard. The flooring seemed dirty- it was original hardwood flooring and I honestly did not feel they were very sturdy. It's very noisy if you have neighbors. We literally could hear someone zipping and unzipping their items. The hallway was SHAG CARPET! how gross! The pros of this hotel are that the reception has been updated and the staff was friendly. If you're an English speaker visiting Austria, this is a great place to stay! Vienna is a really easy city to visit for outsiders, and Hotel Donauwalzer makes your visit even easier. Not only does the hotel sit just a two minute walk from the train/subway station, but the staff speaks English. Hotel Danauwalzer is a very old building that has survived a lot of history. It's currently owned by a young couple who you'll see around the hotel (as well as their massive dogs in the courtyard or stairwell!) The rooms are nothing too special, but overall are very nice. I went with a group from college and stayed in a room with two twin beds. You can open your windows to let in some air or to look out onto the bustling streets of Vienna. We had a room with a very nice bathroom - both the toilet and the shower were in the same room, which was not the case with some of our colleagues. It's a large walk-in (very European) shower without a tub. As an added touch of old-school charm, they don't use plastic hotel keys. Rather, they use traditional keys and locks. You'll need to check in your key each time you leave the building, but the staff is quick to assist you and there aren't that many guests. The breakfast is exceptional - there is a full spread of yogurt, breads, cheeses, coffee, pastries, meats, and even champagne. Don't eat out - this is a terrific breakfast! Finally, be sure to have some beer off the tap and some strudel when you visit the lobby. When in America can you check into a hotel at the bar and sit down and have a tap beer? Hotel Donauwalzer is a unique place to stay with excellent access to one of the world's great cities. read more

This is a great experience for the price we paid. If you are looking for a cheaper place to stay, with great service, this hotel is a perfect choice. The subway is two blocks from the hotel and it's about a 15 minute ride to the city center, where you can transfer to whatever subway line you need. The rooms are simple and straightforward. The staff all speak English, which is helpful, and are great at recommending places and answering questions. The breakfast was on the high end of affordable, so we did it one day for a splurge. It was amazing! The spread was incredible and a live violinist played while we had breakfast. It was really lovely. You can see the owners around the hotel, and it is nice to see that they are visible, helping staff and helping guests. I would definitely recommend a stay here! read more
