Thwarted camping plans and lack of initiative left us stranded an hour into our 24h trip on Lana'i. When picking up our rental we were warned that camping was not allowed on the island, on pain of a $500 towing fine. We hiked a 4mile portion of the Munro trail, explored rocks at Garden of the Gods, off roaded for 2 hours to Polihua beach, whiled away time at Hulopoe beach, passed a police checkpoint coming back to town, and at 8pm when all dinner options had closed, decided we needed to do something about our situation. With hotel rooms starting at $350 (sans kamaaina), complimentary parking, the restaurant open until 9pm, and an unwilling to pay the $700 a night stay at the other hotel options, the Hotel Lanai was our first choice. + The Gouda Mac and cheese at the restaurant was excellent + 2 bottles of complimentary water a day + Free wifi + Soft beds with 4 pillows to each bed. The lack of firm pillows meant I stacked 3 pillows to make one firm pillow. + The rooms are gorgeous, clean, and relaxing. Kind of feels like something out of an onsen. + The room is for the most part, electronically controlled, from lights to temperature to the toilet. The bathroom features Japanese-style toilets with a seat warmer and a built-in bidet. + Concierge is so helpful and friendly. Thank you for your assistance! + Complimentary parking + Complimentary continental breakfast from 0600-0900; for COVID times, a to-go box of banana, pastry, and creamer is provided. Coffee is self-serve. Overall, a delightful hotel. Would be happy to stay here again.

Cute little hotel in Lāna'i City! From the outside you wouldn't think much of it, but the rooms are nicely renovated and feel very spa like. Lights, temperature and shades are controlled using electronic panels in the room and the toilet was a Toto! Bed was super comfy. Staff was friendly and check in was easy. It's right by the town square and in very short walking distance of the island's stores and restaurants. While not inexpensive it's the island's "budget" alternative to the four seasons. Grounds are meticulously maintained and rooms are very clean. Why I didn't give this property 5 stars - they need to do better work with sound reduction. The first night the restaurant was closed so I didn't expect noise. I could hear the neighbors talking in their room, when they passed in the hall and it wasn't muffled. You could literally hear word for word. I had to turn my tv on just to muffle what they were watching. The second night the restaurant was open and it was SO LOUD. It sounded like there was a band playing in my bathroom. After the band stopped, there were some noisy patrons that took a while to clear out. Fortunately with corona restrictions the restaurant couldn't stay open super late so we were able to get to bed at a reasonable hour. It just made it hard to enjoy the room which you'd want to do because there isn't much going on at night. Ask for the rooms furthest from the restaurant and you'll fare a little better on the noise. Also, the continental breakfast was far too basic for the price point of this hotel.

This hotel is a little gem, surrounded by the most lush landscape and flowers. It's like a small cabin in the tropical woods. The staff is so friendly and attentive. The hotel is incredibly clean and well kept. The rooms are simple but beautifully decorated with wood trim. Each room has a high-tech toilet/bidet that "greets" you by opening the lid and lighting up with a heated toilet seat. The kiddos got a real kick out of it. The beds are some and comfortable. We went during COVID times and the staff took extra care in making sure the place was clean and disinfected with all the proper social distancing requirements. Your stay comes with breakfast and coffee in the morning, they make each breakfast to order with real plates and silverware so you can take it back to your room and open the windows and feel the fresh ocean breeze and enjoy your food. There are no microwaves but they do have a mini fridge. We will be back fo sure!

Huge comfy bed!

I stayed in Hotel Lanai for the first time earlier this month and it was great! The place was recently renovated (still smelled like new paint in some places) and it is apparent there was a lot of attention to detail in the selection of the artwork, materials, furnishing ... even the restaurant was excellent! A place to get gourmet meals on Lanai! Got inside and outside dining seating. Upon check-in by the friendly staff, they walked me to my room, gave me my complimentary chocolate chip cookie (really good), and showed me how to operate all the fancy controls. Everything electronically and remotely controlled. 2 type shades (sheer and solid), lighting, climate control... all from a panel just inside the door. My only complaint is that it would be nice if there was a more easily reachable light control when lying on the bed. Some rooms got a lanai but regretfully I was not one of those lucky ones. The lanais got stairs going down to some nice walking paths, and there is a fire pit (I did not get to check it out in the evenings), but looked nice! Bed was comfy, big ... somehow too big (and high) in a way! It pretty much filled up the room, so there wasn't any space to put a nice chair to sit and relax. TV was huge and probably heaven for TV lovers. But for myself, I turned it on once as I'm not much of a TV person. Bathroom was nice, walk in shower ... and an automatic toilet that opens up when you walk up to it, complete with seat warmer and bidet (if you choose to use it)! The hotel is just at the end of the main drag in Lanai City. Stores and restaurants all within 3-5 minute walking distance. Gas station a 2 minute drive from the hotel. Parking is right outside the hotel and they did not charge any extra for that. There is a breakfast buffet that was really good. Portugese sausage, other meats, potatoes, rice, fresh fruits, yogurt, cereals, bagels, bread & toast, coffee, hot water & tea, fruit juices ... so a nice variety! A very nice (and much cheaper) option right in Lanai City as compared to the $1,000/night room rate quoted for Manele ! Would definitely stay here again!

Behemoth TV. Pic doesn't do it justice.

This was the old place to stay in town, but then Larry Ellison bought it. He sank money into a big renovation. It is lovely, sitting at the end of the town square. You could easily walk to anything in the historic downtown. The price of a room comes with breakfast, with hot and cold selections. You can eat there or grab things to go. There are happy hour specials in the evenings from 5 - 6:30. Thursday nights are $2 tacos; the pork tacos and the chicken tacos were both very good and tasted totally different from each other. If you miss happy hour, expect to pay a lot. My friend had the truffle risotto and unfortunately neither of us particularly liked it. (Several other good and less expensive places are close by.) This place is hoppin' at night with tourists and locals. The lanai is open on weekends and there's live music. The rooms are secure. You need a key card to get into your room wing. Nearly everything is automated. There's a panel next to the door that controls lights, a/c and heat, and shades. You can decide if you want daytime or nighttime lighting. There's a remote for the celing fan and light (which you will need to read in bed). There are blackout shades and regular ones. I had to put down the shades early because everyone going in and out of the front entrance could see me. The toilet opens and closes when you get close, and flushes for you. There's a walk-in shower with bottles of body wash, shampoo, and conditioner. You have bathroom lighting options: day, night, nightlight. Oh, check the drawers in the bathroom: That's where you'll find tissues, washcloths, extra soap and TP, etc. There's a small fridge with two complimentary bottles of water and a big white chocolate cookie. (Yummy!) The TV is a hi-def behemoth. It's awesome. Watching golf, I could see individual blades of grass and sweat stains, which I've never seen before. Your TV welcomes you; your name is written in the upper left hand corner. You can access Netfix, Pandora, YouTube, and more. But somehow all HBO channels were always "temporarily unavailable." There's a shared lanai with four rocking chairs, a small table, and mood lighting. I had the smallest type of room, in the front. Great view of the town. Plenty of storage space. It was more than enough room for two adults and maybe even a little one. Free parking in front and overflow parking next door. So why on earth a 3-star rating? Insane prices. No discounts for kupuna (seniors), state workers, kamaaina (locals). You must prepay at least one night (maybe entire stay? Not sure as I stayed only one night). Strict and punitive cancellation policies. They would not work with our travel agent so I had to front nearly $350 and wait to get reimbursed. I'm not even in here for 24 hours. (I checked prices right before I left. The same room was already $375/night, before taxes and fees. All that money spent on renovations - and the place is not accessible. If you cannot get up and down stairs, forget it. You can't stay here. Heck, you can't even eat here. I had a terrible time with the stairs. There's a little stool to put your suitcase on, but not a single chair in the room. The matress is so soft it's like squashing a marshmallow. If you weigh 100 pounds, it's probably fine. For a heavy person like me, it was miserable. It was so hard to get in and out of the bed or just move without potentially hurting myself. I could not find a comfortable position to sit in bed; I kept sinking and sliding down. (I also kept sliding toward the edge.) I ended up with a backache. There were lots of pillows but all of them were very soft. I wished so much for a comfortable chair. I did not sleep well and was tired and sore in the morning. My 20-year-old chaise at home cost less than one night here and is far more comfortable to sit and sleep on. There's a peep-hole, useless to me because I'm barely five feet tall and it was up several inches over my head. If you do not have a disability and have the money, it may be awesome for you. For some of us who are kind of beaten up and don't have much money, it's can be really difficult.

Entry area. Nicely decorated.

Loved this beautiful charming hotel. It's a bit pricey but common for Lanai, and less expensive than the Four Seasons. My room came with breakfast at the Lanai City Bar and Grille located in the hotel. There's a shared deck, perfect for sitting in the morning with coffee and reading the paper.

We LOVED our stay at Hotel Lanai. From the delicious buffet style breakfast, warm hospitality, to the well appointed, modern rooms. We enjoyed watching the sunset through the Pines in front porch rocking chairs. We would highly recommend a night or two at Hotel Lanai before splurging on the rooms at the Four Seasons. Lucky for us, we enjoyed the best of both worlds :)

Ever want some peace and quiet when you visit Lanai, Hotel Lanai is the place to be. Soon as i arrived, i was greeted by birds of paradise on my path towards the lobby. The rooms are very well maintained and the staff are very helpful. The continental breakfast varied daily which i really liked. The garden grounds and lanais were well kept and cleaned, and i often found myself sipping my coffee enjoying the tree lined view of the town square from my lanai. This hotel is perfect for guest who needs to just relax and unwind from a very busy work week schedule. Hotel Lanai is within walking distance from the town square, where you can find shops and cafe's and meet friendly locals.

Hotel Lana'i was perfect for our little anniversary getaway. We were looking to get away from the busy life of Honolulu and Lana'i was exactly what we were looking for, peace and quiet! With no kama'aina rates for this hotel, it was still much more reasonable than the only other two hotels on this island. This hotel is in the heart of Lanai City, so everything you need is within walking distance. They do offer a unlimited use shuttle for an additional fee which takes you between the two resorts and the airport. The room we booked was about $180/night and had a king size bed. It was a cute room decorated with tropical flower paintings and a beautiful Hawaiian quilt. The bed was super comfy, in fact too comfy that all we wanted to do was sleep all day! The bathroom was a little small, with a tiny shower. There is no air conditioning, only a ceiling fan which lucky for us we came in February so it wasn't a problem. It was at a perfect 66 degrees at night. There is no TV, but who needs a TV when you have the whole island to explore? You're on vacation. They do offer a continental breakfast which was okay. There was coffee, tea, orange juice, and some pastries. It wasn't enough to fill us up. If you're looking for a true relaxing, comfortable, quiet vacation, I suggest you stay at Hotel Lana'i.

We were staying at the Four Seasons and looking for a alternative for dinner. The city of lanai does not offer much, but this was a jewel. Our server was friendly and could not have taken better care of us. We had a lovely bottle of Rosé (dry yet full body) which went well with the roasted chicken (my personal fav - fell off the bone) and bone-in grilled pork chop. I insisted on ordering the bread pudding - and thank god I did! Yum - top notch! FYI - I would skip the spicy lobster shrimp bisque unless you like sweet. They make it with coconut milk. But it did have nice heat.

The communication with Sensei before and during our trip was terrible and pretty much non-existent. We stay at Four Seasons resorts often and never have I had an issue with communication like Sensei. The miso cod at the restaurant was extremely fishy tasting and not fresh. Pretty disappointing for such a pricy place.

We ended up staying in the Kaiholena Suite, and loved the balcony, bathrooms and living room with the games, very large screen TV, and comfy sitting areas for working and relaxing. I really liked the beautiful chess set which we made use of. The Sensei team was amazingly attentive, addressing all of our needs, and making us feel completely welcomed. Everyone from the front desk, masseuses, transportation, restaurant staff and everyone in between, we greatly appreciated their kindness and service. Special thanks to Elliott who assisted us with a minor thermostat issue in our room which was resolved without issue. Sensei by Nobu was a wonderful dinner with a relaxing ambiance and delicious entrees and desserts. We opted for a custom massage, snorkeling, and some hale time, well worth booking ahead of time, thanks to the wonderful Sensei experience team. Everything was seamless, from the transportation from Lana'i air to the resort, transportation to the snorkeling experience from the lobby, shuttle service to the other resort for dinner, to checking out and departing at the end of our stay. We loved the library and spent some time playing billiards and shuffle board. Some favorite things about Sensei vs the Four Seasons beach resort (based on my observations: -Slower pace overall -Mostly adults, no kids under 16 -Feels geared more towards relaxation and wellness experiences -Still have access to the beach resort via the shuttle that runs every hour -Feels more like a tropical hidden getaway Pros: Exceptional staff, gorgeous well kept garden and grounds, delicious restaurants and food options, beautiful suite, and seamless transportation. Cons: Having to leave.

The Innkeeper Isabelle did a great job, preparing very good breakfast and keeping a great company. There are 4 bedrooms in the house. Noise level depends on who you are sharing the house with. There is no Kamaaina discount for this B&B but price is reasonable $129/night. They do not charge for unlimited Shuttle Service. You need to deal with the Shuttle directly. On our most recent trip, we stayed for 3 nights, and would've been happy to extend for another night. This is a great spot if you just want to live the resort life and relax by the pool. There are also activities that you can do off site, and a shuttle that goes into the city every hour. The downtown is small, but is worth checking out if you have the time. There's a handful of restaurants, a grocery store, a new retro-themed bowling alley, and movie theater. There are also a couple of hiking trails by the hotel. If you walk towards the beach, towards the left there's a short hike, and on the right is a longer hike along the water. The hike on the right is much harder--I'd describe it as an ankle breaker. It's mostly hiking over a lot of rocks, so you'll want to have the appropriate shoes, plenty of water, and go early in the morning to try to avoid the sun. On site, there are plenty of great views of the water, and five excellent restaurants to eat at: 1. The Break. Great casual spot for coffee, breakfast sammies, musubis, and acai bowls in the morning. Also serves lunch and dinner. 2. Malibu Farm. Nice restaurant by the pool for breakfast or lunch. Fresh, healthy, and local ingredients. This was my favorite spot. We came for lunch our first and last day. 3. Osteria Mozza. Italian restaurant by Nancy Silverton. Tasty pastas and pizza. 4. Views. This spot is a short car ride away, near the golf course. Nice spot for lunch for the scenery, but I prefer Malibu Farm for the food. 5. Nobu. We didn't visit this resaurant. In addition to the food, the rooms were spacious, and the staff was so friendly. I called to make a room reservation and was delighted to speak with an amazing front desk reservationists, someone actually on Lana'i. While I didn't catch his name, he made it a point to address me by my name. He answered all of my questions and explained many of the perks to our stay. Prior to check in, the Four Seasons Customer Service department emailed me a reasonable amount of times, to ensure that we knew about the group activities available and dinner reservation options. In addition, they did a superb job with handling our flight information in order to coordinate shuttle times to and from the hotel. There is a gracious driver that will pick you up from the Lana'i Airport or Manele Bay harbor. As a result of their helpful emails, we indeed booked a group activity (clay shooting) and dinner reservations (Nobu). We were also contacted before our flight to confirm arrival and departure times for their shuttle service. All correspondence was detailed and professional, warm and welcoming. On the day of our arrival, there was a uniformed shuttle driver waiting for us and I'm not sure how, but he knew my name when he welcomed us to Lana'i. He handled our luggage with care and escorted us onto the shuttle. In a few short minutes, we arrived to the resort and was greeted in true Aloha Spirit, with gorgeous shell leis! First time to Molokai, honestly didn't know what to expect. Quiet, local and laid backstarts to…read moredescribe the Island. It's Hawaii 50 years ago. Spent copious amount of time looking up where to buy food and things to do. Sadly, talking to some of the locals and further reading some of these things weren't available. Part of the reason to go to Molokai was to visit the leper colony, Kalaupapa but it was still not open to tourists. We did go to the lookout for a view. Absolutely stunning.... Got sidetracked back to the condo. It was very affordable at $124/night, staying 4 nights. It was also clean and well supplied for beach items, bedding and towels. The kitchen was a bit short on supplies but we made it work. The condo was very quiet, which was incredible, listening to the wings, which never seemed to let up. Each morning we were greeted by the rooster walking around, welcoming the first rays of light. Along with the rosters, there were hens, turkeys, peacocks and a few cats that stopped by during the week. Grocery shopping was done in Kaunakakai, 20 miles away at Friendly Market or Misaki's. Prices were expensive but that was to be expected. We also got some local food from people selling on the street. The laulau was amazing. The bread from Kanemitsu's Bakery was amazing and affordable. The beach at the resort wasn't bad, but the surf was very rough, crashing right at the beach making our tough to get in and out. The beach itself was nice, quiet with very few people. Some nice trails to walk, including the now defunct and overgrown golf course, carts paths are still intact. This isn't glitzy and glamorous. No 5 star hotels or restaurants to eat at. Still sold good local island food can be found at the poke trucks in town and at Mana'e Goods & Grindz! Can never go warring with a moco! It was my speed, enjoying every moment of it, more than Maui, five days later. No commercialization and very few tourists. Rental car was cheap, and the flight runs trip on Mokulele was fun. You want retro Hawaii, this is it! Great time, friendly people. This is Hawaii!

Gorgeous well maintained facility with friendly staff. The workers kept a distance (perhaps because…read moreof covid) but we're very courteous when we did interact. They did an excellent job of keeping the place clean! The grounds were well landscaped with large grassy areas and lots of native flowering plants. We also enjoyed seeing the wild turkeys, peacocks and deers. There were wonderful trails to walk on along the road and previous golf course. It is located along a beach that has amazing sunsets. You can walk to the beach from your room and walk along the beach but the water is not for swimming. It is too rough and rocky. The pool is great and even has a hot tub. We also enjoyed the various grills and trash cans across the grounds. They also had a tennis court and library! We will be interested in returning again!
