Everything about this hotel was 'OK'. We paid twice as much as we usually do for a hotel (it is Switzerland after all) and got half of what we expected.
The good:
The room was a good size and updated.
The bathroom was newly renovated with a walk in shower.
There was a small closet, an in-room safe and some shelving for clothes, etc. as well as a desk area with a good number of plugs.
The free wifi worked well.
The in-room mini-fridge included drinks and snacks for sale.
The TV had a few channels in English if you surfed through. They varied depending on the night.
They have face towels! The towels in general were a nice weight and texture.
There were shutters that could be manually closed over the outside of the window for privacy. According to others in our group, not all rooms had these shutters.
Our room had a small balcony with table and two chairs.
The bad:
Although not a big deal, the decor in the room is sort of shabby. Looks a bit like duct tape cut out and pasted onto the wall. Seriously.
There was a red light behind the headboard that was very irritating and gave me a headache if left on (speaking to other guests, the color changes from room to room). The lighting in general in the room was not very good.
The bed was a bit soft for my personal preference but it was really the pillow that stole the uncomfortable show. One of our group asked for a new pillow three times and finally gave up. They look puffy, but when your head goes down, the fluff all goes up around your ears leaving your head a mattress level.
There is no tub, something I personally enjoy. There was no bar soap or shampoo; something I have come to rely on since many airlines charge for baggage I tend to fly with just a backpack. Instead there was liquid soap dispensers mounted to the wall by the sink and in the shower.
There was no shower head in the shower. Just the hand held and a mount on a sliding bar that you could put up high and tilt to use like a shower.
We had no 'hot pot' or coffee/tea in our room. Others in our group who paid upward of three times what we normally pay did have coffee makers in their rooms, as well as slippers and robes - which we also did not have.
The flooring was an 'indoor/outdoor' type carpet and didn't get vacuumed during our stay.
The room was very warm. All of our group mentioned it. I suppose this is a good problem to have.
Our room, on the front of the hotel, did not include sound proof windows.
On check in, there was no mention of breakfast. We asked later and were told it is included with our room. The breakfast buffet included the usual: juice, fruit, yogurt, eggs, meats, cheese, breads and jams. One day there was a coffee machine and a samovar with tea selection, the next day there was none. The staff made it and brought it to us on that day. Not sure why the change.
The lobby has a couple of seating areas, with newspapers and magazines available (in French), and a bowl of apples at reception for guests. The staff we encountered were polite and friendly with the exception of the gentleman in the restaurant where breakfast is served. He had a very thick accent and I could not understand his English. The more he confused me, the more condescending he became. I appreciate that he was trying to speak English, but the attitude, I could have done without.
All in all, this was a good hotel. My experience was not 4 star, but they do seem to be updating the hotel and working toward that goal. Or perhaps if I spent three times my usual, I would have had a 4 star experience, or at least 3.5. read more
