DoubleTree by Hilton Rome Monti

If you are wanting to stay at a full-service, Hilton branded hotel property while in Rome without…read moregoing bankrupt doing so, The Doubletree Hotel by Hilton Rome Monti would be a solid choice. By Rome standards for a full-service hotel, it would be considered affordable by many. But just to be clear, it is not ultra-inexpensive. For the money, it is firmly in the 4-star hotel genre (getting a 5-star Yelp rating from me within this category because I could find nothing wrong with it during my stay). So, while it may not have crystal chandeliers and butlers running around, it is definitely not a student tourist level hostel. It has modern, comfortable public spaces, elevators that hold more than 2 people at a time, a restaurant with a good breakfast spread, and well-appointed guest rooms with modern amenities and AC. I really don't need more than that when I am traveling solo for business so it was perfect for me given that set of circumstances. As a comparison, I have stayed at a 5-star Rome hotel which was absolutely a step up in terms of service, luxury features, and a sense of a personal attention. But when I am alone on business, that level of service is not necessary and can feel uncomfortable to me. There are plenty of cafe's and restaurants within a 10 min walk and it is a reasonable walk to attractions such as the Opera House, the Coliseum, and the Trevi Fountain. It is also a 10-minute walk to the main terminal Rome train station and the cool, local Nuovo Mercato Esquilino if you are into that type of thing like I am. I spent early mornings walking somewhere for coffee and then through the Mercato to watch the vendors work to ready their produce and meat to be pawed over by early restauranteurs which was a cool look at the underbelly life of this great city. I really liked that this hotel is not right up against the busy street and, on at least 2 sides of the building, there are streets that are not constantly jammed with the noise of traffic. My room fronted one of the quiet sides. It is unclear to me if I was upgraded to a nicer than standard room location because of my Hilton loyalty status but I had a very quiet stay in a room that was impeccably clean and could be easily darked out during the day if I needed a restorative nap for my jet lag. The gym was reasonably appointed and open 24/7 and the wi-fi speed was top notch. I had a great stay here for the money. Based on all of this, when in Rome in the future as a solo business traveler, I would be very happy to stay here again.

I think I received a very good deal and would most definitely stay here again. Rather than take a taxi for seventy dollars, we took the FM1 metro line (which is the main metro line) from the airport for 8 euro, and we disembarked at Ostiense station. We had no idea which way to go from here (although it's a block away) so we stopped in a small store (several were open after 10 pm) and realized that everyone around the station knows hotel Abitart because it's pretty big, and it's in the center of a lot of great restaurants. Walking…read moredistance to the Spanish Stairs at Piazza di Spagna, Via del Corso and Villa Borghese, but pretty far from Vatican Museum if that's your first place of interest. We chose this hotel because of the location and they offer triple rooms for families. From now I know, that next time if I'm looking for a triple room - I'll just choose a double room in the Intercontinental, Marriott, Westin etc. The beds there are pretty large and the standards should be on the level, not like in some dubious small hotel claiming itself as 4 stars. I guess they did all they could to get those 4 stars somehow. I would not rate that higher than 3. Breakfast is served in two separate rooms which is not very convenient - that you have to go from one to another crossing the reception. And it's always packed. The choice of the buffet in one room is larger than in the other, so if you sit there - you don't have to migrate, but it's very noisy and crowded there, so we sat in another room and had to travel for food. Forget about smoked salmon of course. Not much of a fruit choice, but altogether better than in the road motel. And it's included in the rate - that's very nice of them. There is an electrical kettle in the room if you want tea or Nescafe coffee. Mini bar. The electrical sockets were hardly working. If you want to charge your phone or watch TV - you have to make sure that there is a contact, cause otherwise if you just plug in and go - nothing will work. The shower was terrible. You couldn't switch it easily and the hose was leaking. The room as well as bathroom were really tight and poky. There is no fitness center or SPA of course. Among advantages: free wifi and not bad connection. Not enough for viber or skype call, but still. And the personnel was really amiable, courteous and helpful, that was really pleasant. If you have some extra spare $ - choose Westin or other chain hotel famous all over the world. But if you don't care about the comfort in the room and not on romantic escape, but just to sleep and eat breakfast - that's one of the options. Rome has a lot to offer.
