My family and I stayed here a few months ago and it was one of the worst hotel experiences we have had. I would have written this review sooner but they overcharged us by almost $300 and I was waiting for my credit card company to close the dispute. The front desk staff and management were not helpful-- at check in the desk clerk was short, seemed bored and did not tell us about any of the amenities like breakfast, etc..., and our bill was an absolute mess. We tried to straighten it out with phone calls and emails but were completely gaslighted and had to involve our credit card company. I will say parking was easy and the cleaning staff was great. This hotel is a strange one to review, for everything good there was something equally bad. Hotel had a nice appearance but in an area where you feel something bad is about to go down. Room was nice and large but windows are so thin you hear every vehicle drive by the heavily traveled road (including the fire station across the street.). Staff was attentive but the walls are so thin I heard the guy in the next room clear is throat. They try to be ADA accessible but the shower seat provided was so comically small that my wheelchair wife has to sit on the floor to use it, something she can't get in and out of because, well she's in a wheelchair. If you're looking for a goodnight sleep this place is way to loud for that to ever happen. If you are in a wheelchair don't expect to be able to use the shower. At least staff was nice enough to let us depart early with no penalty. read more

What a beautiful place this is to stay at. From the moment you walk in, you notice how comfortable and spacious the front lobby is. Across the room your in the lounge, that has a wall mount flat screen TV, along with a station serving water, coffee and tea. Also on the first floor the featured restaurant and bar called HoL is located. The suites are huge, and depending on your room. You may have the open floor plan design. Clean updated rooms same layouts as former hotel. I love love the three huge sculptural anthracite chunks of coal in the lobby. Lovely lobby seating and dining is sufficiently appetizing. I have never had such an insane experience in my life. On Thursday night the GM of the hotel got drunk and went on a tirade screaming cursing and smashing glasses at the hotel bar. Friday morning I asked to speak to someone in leadership about the situation. In response, the GM (the screaming drunk man) called me to defend himself. I emailed two directors but no response. We are moving to the NE PA area and really wanted to love the Settlers Hospitality properties but we are stunned not only by what happened Thursday night but by the service recovery or whatever they thought they were doing Friday. read more

This hotel is honestly one of best I've ever stayed in for price. For a smaller town in the middle of PA- even if it wasn't - it's gorgeous. Staff is great. And they allow dogs. Which I have mine here- but I don't think I've ever stayed at a hotel that allowed. So you may think- oh you going to see dogs or hear dogs- no lol. It's very quiet. It is clean. And this is my second stay here and this time for about a week. I literally can't imagine going to stay at a days inn or Hilton whatever for probably more money. This is literally the best in the area. Staff actually is nice and the Kol restaurant is awesome. The town is what it is but has cute downtown aspects. And the street behind hotel- has a whole row of churches as it is called Church St. But whether religious or not- it's a nice walk. I have been driving here though wanted a place 15-20 miles in a different direction and all because it's really nice. Rooms are what you'd get at like a Marriott or Hilton in Manhattan. I literally spent more in an ehh place in Dunmore than I do here- and here the room is bigger and staff better and again I can have my dog. My original stay, the young lady that checked me in was great. The staff is all really great. read more

We love this place! Beautifully decorated with historical coal mine photos and huge boulders of anthracite in the lobby. We were graciously greeted by Michael the front manager as soon as we arrived and his exceptional customer service skills and professionalism shone through our entire stay. He treated every guest as if they were his only one and immediately responded to any requests or questions. Michael was very knowledgeable about the area and pointed out points of interest and things to do. The hotel offers a free hot breakfast with something for everyone. Marleen is there to greet you every morning with her warm smile and friendly personality. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and ours had a beautiful view of the courtyard. read more

I am impressed with the red carpet rolled out to veterans and their families at this establishment! At check-in, Dana was so helpful with information for an enjoyable stay. This beautiful hotel in charming Carbondale is one of Settler Hospitality Group's family members. Parking is perfectly situated behind the hotel, with a strolling opportunity from parking lot through a courtyard to the lodging and bar on one side, and a conference room on the other side. The rooms are lovely. Disability access rooms left ample moving space. The decor of this establishment is gorgeous. Enjoy food at an onsite steakhouse or room service. Quick food is available in the cafe. We enjoyed complimentary overnight accommodations and a hot breakfast. What a thoughtful, generous way to thank veterans for their military service. If I can give them less than 1 star I honestly would! The absolute worse staff I have ever come across in hospitality and I travel a lot. I only stayed in the hotel for a total of 7 hours and it was just a piss poor experience. We arrived at the hotel from a wedding at 4am. When we got there they initially couldn't find our reservation and was told it was not there. After explaining that we were charge for the reservation so it should be in the system it was miraculously found after 10 mins of time wasting. We were exhausted so we did nothing but go upstairs and straight to bed. We woke up late and barely made breakfast so after we ate, I asked if we could do a late check-out since we got in so late but we were told we could not. This was approximately 10am and checkout was at 11am. We went upstairs and got dressed because we had a decent drive back to NY. Upon check out, we were charged again with a higher rate than we were initially charged and when asked about it we received a signed receipt saying this would corrected by the lady in charge at the front desk. Less than 5 mins after walking out, we were hit with another charge but we were not sure what it was for and when we called the person on tbe phone said they did not know what the charge was and they could not provide any refunds without a manager. We were able to get someone the next day to tell us that we had received a smoking charge for our room and they had to bring in a special machine to clean but not no other information could be provided. WE DO NOT SMOKE!!!! We called tirelessly for almost 3 weeks and was told everyday that there was no manager and no one could help up. We asked for a time to call and speak to someone and for a call back but we received nothing. After finally getting in touch with someone we were told that within the 5 mins of us leaving the hotel 2 managers checked the room and found these allegedly cigarette butts that were never there and the room was uninhabitable for 3 days!!! To make matters worse we were refunded for any of the 3 charges placed on the card and they said they would not so now I will take matters in my own hand to get my money back from this scheme they have. I would not recommend anyone stay here if they have a choice. Staff is very unprofessional and incompetent and food is mediocre at best. read more

The hotel has been modernized. The Rooms are fairly neat but had a Sour and stale odor. The walls are paper thin so you can hear everything in your neighbors rooms. Just a warning about your conversations. The staff is very disorganized and almost next to impossible to find them when you need them. The staff was not rude, but Definitely need training. The restaurant is no better, there were three or four people working the floor and only 7 patrons. One server had a very loud voice and should learn some vocal etiquette. they were polite and friendly but very disorganized. We have stayed here several times. This place has gone so far downhill we had to leave our table for lunch after waiting 40 minutes with no food. They managed to serve those who arrived after us. Update: No coffee in the morning, no breakfast. Traveler's tip: Turkey Hill turn left out of the hotel second light turn right, but, if you take two cups to hold your coffee they'll charge you for an empty cup. Update: The elevator smells like someone threw up and the lobby bathroom toilet does not flush. Whoever owns this better get new staff and invest because all the local residents have stopped eating here already and but for being the only hotel for miles in any direction they'll fail. read more

Rarely leave hotel reviews, but this was a truly wonderful place to stay! We spent one night here before meeting friends for a weekend at an air bnb to ski Elk Mountain. First the parking is free and easy, a huge plus considering this place is right in the middle of town. Second, everyone working there was incredibly friendly and helpful, like bending over backward to be helpful! I'm training for a marathon and they helped me find a gorgeous and long trail not far from the hotel. The rooms and facilities were also very clean and well kept, the rooms especially were large, clean and welcoming. We would have been happy staying here for many days. Lastly, the included breakfast was large with many options and the area again was very clean. If you need to stay anywhere in the area, this is the spot! read more

Management was in a Transition that never should have affected my daughter's wedding. No one contacted my daughter to say her wedding planner had left a week before her wedding. No one at the Anthracite knew what was going on with her wedding rehearsal and reception. Bride and groom never had a complimentary room for wedding night. it took several trips from me to get that resolve. They double booked he rehearsal dinner with an offsite wedding. My daughters bridesmaid never had a room when she booked under the block, they told her she booked under the wrong weekend then said she cancelled. The bride and groom mailed the last payment for the wedding back August 1st. I was called repeatedly while my daughters ceremony was going on how I needed to make final payment. sadly, the list goes on. Complete lack of customer service. They promised to not charge for the rehearsal that was not done. Credit back the brides parents room that had to accommodate some of the party who they say booked wrong. I will not recommend this venue to anyone. My daughter experienced torture on what is supposed to be the best day of your life!!!!! Hurts me to see my daughter cry for days because of the hotel incompetence. read more

First off, I would like to say this hotel is an awesome property and very clean but the behavior of management was completely unprofessional. I was going to leave this alone until the manager, Chris, just called a co-worker of mine and left a message that was untrue and probably illegal due to the details he shared with him. I was never contacted once by the hotel. I arrived at 1:30am in the morning to check in and my card doesn't work. I called American Express and they inform me I had a fraud alert because I was charged s little over $700 four times by the same merchant so they shut the card down. I let them know it was in fact me and I needed one of the authorizations to go through. It goes through and I check in to my room. Fast forward to check out. I go to turn in my room keys and front desk informs me my card didn't go through again. I told her a brief description of what happened when I checked in and I had a few other forms of payment and not to worry. She was somewhat flustered and I was nothing but polite and did my best to try and calm her down. I told her to take her time and figure it out while I ate breakfast and I would come settle up before I left. When I get back she's on the phone again with the GM, Chris. I asked if I could speak with him and once again politely explained the situation. Long story short, I paid with another card and left after they tried unsuccessfully to raise my rate by $40/night. Fast forward an hour. A coworker of mine shares a voicemail left by Chris on his phone. Chris calls me out by my first and last name, says I was rude, and shared payments details with him on a recording. He reiterates that I have not paid for my room as well. All of this untrue. To my CO-WORKER. They have my number on file and could have easily contacted me. What does my co-worker have to do with a room I paid for. I have no idea what is wrong with Chris but this was completely unacceptable. Its a shame he is running such a unique and great property. read more

Came at noon and was told the room wasn't ready and I said we called for an early check in at noon. Some guy that also works there chimes in and says that doesn't guarantee the room will be ready. It would of been nice if someone told my fiancé that over the phone. The guy also said at 12:10 the room will be ready in 20 minutes. She is using a walker to assist with movement and has particular bedding needs (much of which we brought with us to accommodate the room we had selected at your hotel). We made a reservation at the Hotel Anthracite, as it was perfectly situated and had the room type we desired, a fine dining restaurant, and was in very near proximity to our family. Sarah booked your hotel room with a King suite which suited all of our needs (for bedding and privacy for Sarah and my wife and myself). We also made a dinner reservation for our family the evening of September 10th at the fine dining restaurant at your hotel. Upon arrival we proceeded to check in but were informed that our room - for which we had an email, documented confirmation of our reservation -- was not available and no other King suites were available. We were offered a small, queen double which was inadequate for our needs and not in line with the room we booked and had documented confirmation of its being reserved for our arrival on September 10th. When the check-in clerk noted that our reserved room was no longer available, she sheepishly looked toward the manager who came over and informed us that the King Suite was not available because of a computer "overbooking" error and we had no option but to take the queen double. We asked how this could have happened, as we had documented confirmation - and in a most unprofessional manner - your manager simply told us "it happens" and we had no alternative but to take the queen double if we wanted to stay at the hotel. No apology - no offer of other accommodation or courtesy - simply take it or leave it attitude that you would not expect at a hotel that holds itself out to be a boutique, luxury hotel reaching out to guests. Notably that weekend, the hotel was apparently fully booked, as there was a wedding party in the hotel. Upon further inquiry about how our confirmed reservation could have been ignored or "overbooked" (by the "computer system"), the manager changed her story and admitted to us that she had given the room to the Bride of the wedding party just a few hours before our arrival. The manager told us that the Bride had forgotten to reserve the suite, so the manager simply overrode our confirmed reservation and gave it to the bridal party. There was no effort before our arrival to inform us about this unilateral decision - which overrode our confirmed reservation - nor was there any apology or feeling of remorse for leaving us in this untenable position. We were left with no choice but to leave your hotel and book a room at another hotel 15 miles away. We cancelled our dinner reservation and were compelled to locate another restaurant at the last minute for our family gathering. My wife and I have traveled throughout the United States and the world and have never had a confirmed reservation purposely violated and taken from us. Exacerbating the problem was the emotional impact it had on our goddaughter - still recovering from serious spinal surgery and in need of assistance. Your manager showed no compassion, contrition - nor an ounce of professionalism throughout the process. You hold your Hotel out as a "tribute to heritage." Our experience of your "heritage" was among the most negative, unprofessional, and inhospitable moments of our travels. Not only was our confirmed reservation purposefully taken from us - with your manager initially and falsely blaming a computer error -- but your manager exhibited a lack of professionalism and failure to accommodate her serious mistake - a mistake she herself created. We booked rooms here weeks prior to arriving and have constantly checked to confirm our reservations, even during the morning before our arrival. When we did arrive, they told us that the rooms we booked weren't available anymore and they barely tried to accommodate us even though we had already payed for everything. They not only gave us attitude but they also called the cops like a bunch of wimps (specifically the blonde guy at the front desk), probably because we weren't white like everyone else in that area. Our room was large with a couch and the bed was great. We were on the first floor and the road out front was pretty busy with motorcycles and trucks even on a Saturday. I'd request a higher floor. i had an issue booking thru a 3rd party and getting a military discount. the mgr Robert was more than helpful. even though there was some miscommunication in the beginning, Robert personally called me right away to help resolve the issue. Hotel was beautiful, linens & beds fantastic, soap in the room high end, but sadly staff needs training and overshadowed all the positives. Checked in & hopped in the shower quick to freshen up before a wake. Soap in my hair the water shut off 30 sec in. I called downstairs & they said they probably should have mentioned the water was going to be shut off shortly. Tried Kōl for lunch - no steak on the lunch menu at the steakhouse. Caprese salad had balsamic glaze under the mozzarella that was so baked on??? That I had to rub a tomato back & forth to dissolve a little bit. Also the waitress never refilled our glasses. Asked questions about the menu & waitress couldn't answer any of them. Service was slow, there was only one other table occupied. Came back at 10:45 at night. Pulling into hotel is one lane. A person stopped to check in which ended up leaving 2 cars backed up into traffic waiting and stuck. Tried breakfast. Waited 17 minutes for waitress to come back/get her attention to tell her I would like cream & sugar with my tea. (Know it was 17 minutes because I was keeping an eye on the time because I had to leave at a certain time) Didn't even say sorry. Eggs were over cooked & potatoes burnt. The black bits are onion. Service painfully slow. Didn't understand why. Only 3 tables occupied. Can't imagine if they had a full service. read more

I was here over the weekend for an event and will not be returning if the event is held in the same space next year. I'm truly not one to make egregious complaints about mistakes or misunderstandings, but there was a serious attitude problem with 90% of the staff and that was not okay. Let me start by saying the hotel is beautiful. They definitely need some more basic amenities in the rooms (some rooms didn't even have coffee machines), but these are things that are easily looked passed. Let's get to the really bad. I've never in I've never in my life dealt with a staff so rude and unprofessional across the board. When we checked in, the man at the front desk told us we would be receiving $10 vouchers to use anywhere in the hotel. He SPECIFICALLY said that we would would get one voucher per person in the room. When we got to the room we realized we only received one voucher. The next morning when we went down to the front desk to inquire about the other vouchers so we could use them on the breakfast buffet, the same man at the front desk was incredibly rude and snarky responding to us about us questioning him. All we said to the woman at the front desk was repeating what the thats when the same man came out from the back and said "Well, I was the one that checked everybody in, so I highly doubt that happened." It DID happen, not only to our room, but I confirmed with a few other people in other rooms that they were also told they would get a voucher per person in each room. I can understand and accept if a mistake was made out of ignorance of the voucher policy, or even if he apologized for initially telling us the wrong information at check-in. Instead the front desk clerk basically insinuated I was a liar. In addition to this, there were multiple instances of some of the bartenders and servers acting inappropriately. Multiple staff members were seen and heard outwardly making fun of the event we were attending. One woman in particular with short blonde hair who was bartending the event was seen getting drunk at the hotel bar afterwards and complaining TO US about the ceremony and guests attending it. There were also EXTREME variations in drink prices at the cash-only bar in the ballroom. People were getting charged anywhere from $5 to $16 for basic drinks. After the way the staff treated us, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some of them were pocketing the difference. At one point later in the evening two staff members knocked on a friend's suite door where maybe about 10 of us were, and told us that we weren't allowed to have more people in the room than the number of people actually staying in the room. Mind you, this was a suite and our organization had booked out the entire hotel for the evening, so we were not disturbing other patrons. Then there were the fees. The room I stayed in was booked by my friend, so I can't speak personally on this, but he was slammed with a bunch of holding fees and other mystery fees that were not explained to him and heard the same thing happened to pretty much everyone I talked to about it. These are just a few of many stories I've heard similar to my own experiences with this hotel this weekend. Like I said, I can forgive miscommunication, mismanagement, or even incompetence as a result of not enough training, but it's hard to get past the staff's rudeness and complete lack of unprofessionalism. read more

Our stay was good. There was an issue with the bathroom lights. There is a switch on the OUTside of the bathroom that needs to stay orange and that controls the lights in the bathroom. That was a little strange. I had to get the girl from the front desk up to the room to show us that. She was not the friendliest person. Also the AC/Heating unit. Man that was a mess. We had turned it down as the room was hot (you control it on the wall but its actually a unit by the window) and the thing would NOT turn off. The girl who came up to the room was not much help either. And I guess they do not have a maintenance person on call 24/7 so that was odd. Dinner in the steakhouse was GREAT! Breakfast the next morning? Eh not so much. The town is cute and the hotel offers bikes for the guests. I wish it was warmer so we could have enjoyed them. Overall we would stay here again since the hotel is close to our client. Also I have been trying for DAYS to get a response about the pillows. My Dad loved them and I cannot for the life of me find out the brand or how to buy one. I got a response saying they are commercial and we could purchase one from them; but when asking about the price they have gone silent. read more

We stayed here for a convention in neighboring Wilkes-Barre and it is an easy trip to get to the Mohegan Sun Arena from here. We had two rooms, five adults. We enjoyed the Hotel Anthracite so much! It is a remodeled into a boutique hotel with thoughtful amenities throughout. It is super clean with wonderfully comfortable beds. Easy free parking in the rear. Our rooms both had a fridge and mine had a microwave. Theirs did not. There is a continuously-available Keurig station in the lobby but no coffee makers in the rooms. I actually like that better since those offerings in other hotel rooms usually leave much to be desired in terms of taste. We ate at the Koi restaurant our first night and the burgers were good and fries were actually delicious. There is no complimentary breakfast of any kind and they offered a breakfast buffet but you could not order off the menu. Not even toast, which was not on the buffet. No pastries either. I do not recommend the buffet for the money. Scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes. At 7:30 it had not been replenished and some of the food was actually close to cold. When we were leaving, hot food came out but I still paid $2.50 for coffee plus $8.50 for food plus tip and I didn't have time to argue about the cold food. Maybe breakfast is not their thing. There is a Dunkin Donut right across the street. I recommend it for breakfast. As for the hotel itself, it was a perfect weekend. Wonderfully courteous staff, both in the reservation process and in service while we were there. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel. read more

Do not stay here!!! I recently stayed here and was treated so badly I cannot believe they haven't fired the manager for the way he treats guests and charges them extra fees. I was accused of smoking in my room and charged $125. I DO NOT SMOKE!! When I told them they had the wrong room they told me I was a liar. They also said I was in a room with 3 guys. I was alone on business. When I kept trying to tell them the truth they were dismissive and told me I vomited on the bed and they were adding on fees and then they also overcharged me for the room. I am disputing these charges and will never pay them but the way I was treated is so unprofessional and rude I cannot believe that the manager Chris still has a job!!!! I saved all the messages of accusations and rudeness. I am in total disbelief that someone in the hospitality industry could treat me, as a paying guest on business, in this way. New owners, Settlers are doing a great job of renovating and making upgrades and have renamed this hotel as well. The new decor is very appealing. We have stayed many times here and noticed upgrades of new beds, linens, much more luxurious pillows. We were however shocked to see how much the prices increased. This is a blue collar hard working community - it's not a resort town. We hope prices will be affordable. Note to management - please get rid of the crappy hair dryers- they are absolute garbage and do NOT work. Bring your own hairdryer if you plan to stay! And upgrade the in room coffee pots to keurigs with better coffee. Even Holiday Inn Express has mini Keurigs! New Towels are nice but small in size or perfect for little people. Rooms were modern and clean, comfortable beds. Would of Appreciated an extra blanket to be in closet as it was colder when we stayed. Breakfast used to be included with room. We stayed here last night. It was a very nice experience. The room was modern, clean and well appointed. The rate was fair and the staff was helpful. We also had dinner in their restaurant, Amber's. The food was excellent and not expensive. A positive experience all around. read more

Liked this place better when it was a Best Western. Booked a room for 5 nights, awakened on second morning at 8 am by housekeeping who "thought we'd checked out". Received phone call on day 4 stating "you need to get your bags out of the room immediately as you have checked out"...rushed back to hotel, no one could figure out how system made mistake...had to "check in" again, get new keys etc. They were apologetic, but very inept. Will never stay there again. read more
