Hotel Alte Post is a very traditional Bavarian hotel right in the middle of Oberammergau. Stepping out the front door is absolutely amazing, and the rooms facing the main street probably have a stunning view of the Kofel. In terms of decor, Alte Post is very traditional; from the thin green-patterned carpet to the glass half-divider instead of a shower curtain. Service at the front desk was pleasant enough, and the breakfast buffet was above average.
But Alte Post has two nice perks that definitely bump it above average for me for this type of hotel. First, it has its own parking lot, which is useful in a small town. If you are driving down Dorfstrasse from the main road (B23), make a left onto Sankt-Lukas-Str, then turn left immediately after the hotel. The gate will open automatically when you enter, and your room key will let you leave for free. Second, the rooms seem to be larger than average for a hotel of this type, which is always appreciated.
The only thing I'd change would be the showered, which in my room was pretty under-powered, but in the end the advantages outweighed that minor annoyance. read more
