If you like character over franchise, can deal with a little shabbiness, like to chat with staff and wouldn't mind running into a Hemingway/Pat Conroy type character in an old southern town's bar - this is your spot. Stay in the main building. If you room faces the street, you will not hear the bar. The elevator is an antique and must have the reception come run it for you. The stairs make you feel you are in a fabulous time warp. Also the 12' ceilings, giant windows, and excellent period architectural details. It also really looks the part for the ghost rumor we heard. Downstairs with lobby entrances are a bar and an Indian restaurant. The exit out back through a very New Orleanian crumbly terrace was packed with people from 6pm on. You can walk all over from here but must like shabby chic and Southern friendliness. Our AC worked fine, room was old and clean, plenty of towels, toiletries and breakfast. It reminded us of shabby fabulous places in NYC and New Orleans. And, a surprising bargain (2bed room + breakfast + downtown parking= $78.) for the center of town. read more

It's a clean, inexpensive motel, downtown Aiken. Literally a few steps from The Alley, it's not bad. Definitely 2 Star, simple, Super 8 level amenities. We did not rent the room ourselves, but a friend did, and we had a little party. I was surprised how nice it was. I think the room cost around fifty bucks. read more

Never again! We stayed here for my cousins wedding and what a nightmare. Rooms are very dated and our first room had a dead cockroach on the carpet. We had no working AC in our room so the friendly staff offered to switch us to a better room. Well that AC unit didn't work either and no one seemed to know how to fix it. They blamed it on us saying we pushed the HOLD button. Well that wasn't the case because I wouldn't have touched it knowing the first issue we had. We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights ----- all we got was a lousy $20 credit off our entire bill. What a joke. Did I mention how hot our room was while trying to get ready for a wedding!!!!!! The tiki bar at the hotel Aiken is great for people watching. The tiki bar is small but next door they have a huge projection TV that they point at a giant brick wall. This is absolutely great if they are showing the game you want to watch. I'm not sure if they do a movie night there but they should. All in all a fun bar with spacious outdoor seating. There is also indoor seating where a live band played and then another indoor room with just a bar. The place is deceivingly large. The crowd spans the decades which adds to the people watching. I saw a college guy, who could barely stand, well he couldn't, he was using the chair for support, try and hit on a woman in her late 40's. She was definitely amused but that's where it stopped. Don't expect fancy, y'all, but do expect fabulous. If you want a sanitary suburban experience don't come here. But if you want to stay in a historic building from 1898 with South Carolina's oldest operating elevator, then definitely come here. You can walk to multiple locally owned restaurants (The Stables OMG), be surrounded by the lush green of an old downtown, and the staff is SUPER friendly. I dabbled between a three and four star but ultimately decided it had to be three to be fair. My cousin had a wedding in Aiken and we all stayed here. We tried to use the bars after the reception but it was too crowded, so I can't say too much for the bars. They gave us two free drinks at check-ins, so that's all I can vouch for. When I asked her what she had in red wine, she said Chardonnay, so do with that what you like. There are two main buildings, the older historic building and the just old strip-mall style hotel building. Most everyone stayed in the historic building, but my room was in the strip-mall building. If they spent money on renovations and cleaning mold off of floorboards, this could be a gorgeous, super-fancy, super-expensive hotel. As it were, bathroom doors were missing pieces (as in while I was using the bathroom in my brother's suite, anyone in the room could see) and there were gross tile/popcorn ceilings. They warn you extensively about the noise levels from the bars affecting the rooms until 2am. This appealed to us since we knew we would be causing said noise. We were hanging out in my brother's room in the old historic building. At about 1:30am, management came to warn us that they had received a lot of complaints, but it was okay until 2 - after 2, they had to call the cops on us. (They were super nice about it). But they also let us know that the strip-mall section had no such limitations, so we were able to go over there and hang out. We didn't stop until around 4, and I know we were noisy because my ears were ringing when I went to sleep. House-keeping came by several hours before check-out while we were still sleeping, but it's okay, because house-keeping also found my ID and debit card and turned it in. Rooms were pretty cheap (mine was $77), considering, and parking was free. Didn't make it to breakfast, so I can't say. They ran out of coffee and milk, too. read more

While visiting Aiken, I happened to run into Hotel Aiken. I stopped in for happy hour, which was dead, but the bar had amazing specials. As an avid drinker, I'm always looking for good specials. Even though it was just me and a friend, the bartender Rebecca made it an enjoyable experience. I had a $3 bloody mary, which was delicious. The only drawback was that all the garnish weren't available. being new to the town, she explained a lot of the things to do in the local area and gave us a lot of ideas. She is definitely knowledgeable about the area and the bar. If your in the area stop in for a refreshing cocktail from here. read more

Have stayed here several times. The location is possibly the best in town. For the money this is a bargain. The rooms have always been clean. Slightly on the shabby side. The demo and construction on the historic inn has begun. My room in the courtyard annex had a fresh coat of paint and a new huge television. Parking can be tricky. But you have all the shopping,food and beverage you could want in a short pleasant walk. Am excited about the new hotel. Will not be the bargain price these rooms are but should be worth it. The staff are always friendly and Stayed here a week ago for 2 nights. Room has been painted. Always clean! And the staff are stellar. It can be noisy. But for the money and LOCATION just suck it up and play music. I can't wait to stay in their $200 rooms. Not a better location in this town. Staff are always friendly and accommodating. A.K.A. Holley House. This was my first introduction to nightlife in Aiken, and it is definitely a fun place. Local and regional bands play Friday and Saturday nights inside, but most people tend to hang out in the back near the tiki bar, or just inside the door to laugh at the people playing with the punching machine. As soon as you walk in there is an "old" smell which ends up being thru out the hotel. Staff was very friendly. Elevator had to be operated by the staff only. Wi-Fi only worked in the lobby. We had a "King Suite" but wouldn't call it that compared to other hotels. Very old and very dated. Wouldn't stay there again even if it was free. Needs either to be torn down or SERIOUSLY renovated. read more

DO NOT STAY HERE IF YOU ARE NOT INTERESTED IN THE "NIGHTLIFE" OF AIKEN If you are booking this on Hotels.com, or any other travel site, make sure that you do not pay up front for a stay over the weekend.. Unless you are into a Friday night DJ "spinning it up for you all night" (or at least until 2 am.) If you are a light sleeper do NOT accept a room on the second, you will feel the floor thump all night long and then at 2 am when the bar closes downstairs, along come the folks that want to continue the party "upstairs" ;-0 if you know what I mean. And Saturday was worse, or perhaps you might enjoy the cover band belting out their renditions of Tool, Sound-garden or some of your other favs from the 90's. I actually like Tool... This was not a great tool cover band, I mean really, it's Tool in Aiken.... It did manage to keep me awake on the third floor. When we asked about checking out a day early after 3 nights, "we cannot cancel it but you can check with your online booking service, they can cancel it but we can't" GUESS WHAT, that statement was meant to be misleading and to pass the buck, the online booking states they cannot cancel it without the Hotel Aiken ok'ing it. SO, moral. DO NOT expect quiet on the weekends until 2am. And if you haven't been through it, don't book all of your nights at once, check the fine print and if it says "not refundable".... Hotel Aiken should advertise the fact that it is a historic hotel that is pursuing sales at the bar over the actual hotel business, especially on Hotels.com. read more

This hotel was recommended to me by a local, so I booked for two nights on the weekend of a very popular event. When I received my e-mail confirmation, I saw that it was for just one night so I e-mailed back and asked them to make a correction and confirm. When I received no reply, I called and asked them to correct the reservation, which they said they would. Shortly thereafter, I received a call informing me that only the first night was available and the second night had been overbooked by four rooms. Left with only half of the weekend, I was obliged to cancel. The attendant made no apology and hung up quickly. read more

OK so first thing you need to clarify is whether you're booking a room in the actual historic main building or one of the "courtyard" rooms...which is basically a motel that is a separate building. Hotel staff was very good about forewarning about noise coming from the bar, which wasn't too big of an issue. We had a great time at the bar inside the hotel. I was a little put off by the bar outside though. We got free drink vouchers for being hotel guests (limited to bottled beer, wine, and soft drinks). When we asked the not-very-busy bartender what bottled beer they have, his response was "man...we got so many different types it would take forever to list them all." Umm...thanks. read more

I am appalled and embarrassed that I recommended the Hotel Aiken to friends of ours from out of town, and I will NEVER do so again. The Willcox, while lovely, was a little rich for their blood. When I told them about the Hotel Aiken - historic property, convenient downtown location, and half the price of the Willcox - they were sold. When we stayed 1.5 years ago and recommended it for our wedding guests, our experience was ok. Not great, but ok. We had personally been in to the hotel 6 weeks before our wedding and the manager gave us a tour of the rooms so that we could pick the perfect one for our wedding night. We put down a cash deposit to ensure they would hold our room. Well, our room was given to someone else and the hotel staff, while apologetic, really did nothing to make up for the mix-up. Fine. I was disappointed, and it was a pain to find a refrigerator for some of the things we'd brought with us (champagne, midnight snacks) since the room they gave us didn't have one - the one we'd reserved DID have one. But, fine. The room was clean even if the furnishings were showing their age, and the bed was comfortable. I was disappointed on my wedding night, but I continued to recommend the Hotel Aiken to friends. NEVER AGAIN! Our friends showed us photos our their room - not at all clean, and roaches on the wall! I had warned them about the noise from the bar and although they requested to be far away from the bar, they were placed on the 2nd floor just above it. When they complained they were offered another room far away from the bar - which they should have gotten in the first place - and not offered a refund for their second night even though they only stayed one night. Truly, the photos were disgusting and if that is the state of this hotel now, there is no way I will send anyone there again. From what I understand when they asked to talk to the manager, she yelled at them and said, "you'll never come back here again so why should I care what you think?" Um, maybe because you are the service provider? It is truly a shame that such a historic property has fallen to this. It could be such a quaint hotel and with their location, they could easily get twice as much for their rooms if they'd just put some money and care into it. Never, ever, ever again, and I will tell anyone who is thinking about staying there to steer clear. The Hilton Garden Inn doesn't have the location, but is a far better hotel for the money. read more

This place had a great pic online and the lady on the phone e was so nice. We came in from out of state and when we arrived the hotel looked nothing line the pic, the room sure ad heck didn't look like the pic and the staff was rude. The night club was so loud we could not hear the tv in our rooms. Cabs parked in our parking space and wont move. The staff won't help us. Then we got blocked in by 2 cabs. They changed us as much as the brand new holiday Inn and the tv didn't work have the time. Plus no wifi and the breakfast was some few day old bagels and juice. read more

Well ... It is quaint & has some charm. It could use some updates and deep Cleaning but it is clean " enough". Sitting outside at the bar was nice and drinks were not expensive. My complaints are small but important (1) TV remote in bedroom wouldn't work so had to keep getting up (2) air conditioning set on 65 but room read 75 all night and was locked so couldn't adjust & (3) no one answered front desk any time called to discuss the above. read more

I stayed at this hotel because of it's pet friendly policy. I was not told there was a fee to keep the pet there although I did call to confirm that I was bringing a pet. If I had known I would have mentioned it again upon check in. After calling the hotel to ask why they charged my card an extra $250 they told me there is a pet fee which we did not pay. The normal pet fee is $10 per day which I am willing to pay. However, $250 is excessive. The manager absolutely would not budge or act reasonable so we are taking up the dispute with our credit card. We were in town for an event that took us away from the hotel all day long and took our dog with us so the dog really didn't stay in the room much. I knew this was a dump of a hotel based on the reviews but was willing to overlook that based on the location to the downtown area. There are exterior corridors to the hotel and various persons were hanging out on the exterior corridors for cocktail hour into the wee hours of the morning. The next morning there was a full glass of beer about 25 feet away from our hotel door. The "check-in" area is a hotel room and the "continental breakfast" is in the same room. Basically a box of cereal. I am sure it will be beautiful when the renovations are complete but I certainly wouldn't stay here due to my experience with the manager, Mr. Patel, who I feel was very greedy in this situation. This is the worst hotel that I have ever laid eyes on. The entire room was absolutely dirty! Under the bed looked as if it had NEVER seen a vacuum, broom, nor steam cleaner.The wallpaper was peeling off the walls. The bed had ANTS in it and the wash cloths had stains and hair all over them. I called down to the front desk and a woman named, Cindy picked up. I informed her that the wash cloths and towels were nasty. The response that she gave me was that she doubted what I was saying because they cleaned their linen everyday. I felt as if she was trying to paint me out to be some type of liar. Her little comment was rude. The toilet was almost impossible to flush. I had to basically push down as if I were going to break it, just to flush it. The blanket that was on the bed when we arrived? It looked as if it had bodily fluids on it. The ceiling within the bathroom looked as if the hotel had a good deal of plumbing problems, with the water stains and all, the paint was peeling off of the door, and the bathtub itself was stained. Just staying in that one room made me feel as if I was going to get sick somewhere down the line. I regret not continuously urging my boyfriend to get his refund back. I would've given this hotel ZERO stars but that isn't an option. If you are visiting Aiken and come across this hotel, stay away....It's not worth wasting your money on. There are a LOT of better hotels in the area that you can always visit. read more
