Would you stay in a hotel, built in 1455?
Made reservations here about 2 months in advance of our mid July stay, based on Tripadvisor, which rated this the #4 best value hotel in Zurich, out of 305 places to stay.
The other three hotels rated better values, could not compare to the Hotel Adler which was rated as the maximum 100 for walkability, 223 restaurants within 0.3 miles, and 90 attractions within 0.3 miles.
We got in after 20 hours of flights and airport stays at Zurich airport at 8:30am, took the train to the main train station for 6.50 chf each, and walked 10 minutes to the hotel, towing 2 carry-ons and 2 daybacks.
Place is in the middle of old town, and had to draw a zig zag map by hand using google maps from home, as the streets in old town are only a few blocks long, with lengthy German names. Google maps would not work on the European cell phone app here in Zurich.
4 story old style hotel, with maybe 20 rooms per floor. Came dragging in, as it was 10am local time, or 1am California time, and no sleep on the red eye from Atlanta to Zurich.
We notified them in advance of our arrival time, and they had our room ready at 10am! On the way up, noticed the spacious lobby with plenty of couches and lounges for those unfortunate to have to wait for their rooms, along with a PC to surf the web or print out airline boarding passes.
Third floor room 9' x 13' smallest of the 5 hotel rooms that we stayed in our 2 week trip in Europe, and we paid an extra 30 chf for an extra 20 square feet of space!
Two twin beds side by side, with their own comforters and sheets. Did not try sleeping on the crack between the two beds, for fear of falling through!
Large window opened up on a square behind the hotel, where artisans set up their wares on this Saturday. Some of the units on the other side of the building had individual balconies. This was the only hotel in our stay without a balcony.
Room only had a shower in the bathroom, the only hotel in our 2 week stay without a bathtub. Wife stubbed her toe several times on the raised lip on the edge of the bathroom. Also very tight space on the counter of the sink, which looked like something from the 1950s.
Would have preferred to have the TV mounted near the ceiling, as it took up too much of the very limited counter space on the desk area. Nothing of interest on TV anyway, as everything in German.
Room came with complimentary breakfast, which included cooked hard boiled eggs, besides the usual fruit, ceral, pastries, and sliced meat.
The first night that we were here was Saturday night, and seemingly the entire town was up until 4am, celebrating our arrival with beer drinking, rowdiness, and singing from the restaurants on the bottom floor, on all sides of the hotel. Got up and checked the lobby area facing the front of the hotel, and the noise was deafening! All other nights were quiet. read more
