Centrally located, clean, cozy, quaint, and operated by friendly and competent staff (full disclosure: two of the staff are friends of ours, but they were NOT working during out stay), with the comfiest bed I have ever slept in, at any hotel, anywhere. There are tons of additional perks that come with booking a room here, and I am sure I missed many others, but the nightly "wine hour" (5:30PM - 6:30PM) is a great time to relax, and socialize with your party, or other hotel guests, either in the naturally-lit dining area, or any of the multiple patio areas (either up front with the fountain, or in back among the gardens and manicured private yard), while sipping on wine and nibbling on a self-serve charcuterie. There's brandy available in the library at night, should you be so inclined (re: I was), as well as a grand piano, if you fancy yourself a keysmith (re: I do not). Breakfast in the morning consists of many continental favorites, and appears to be a mostly DIY affair, although my wife and I were engaged otherwise, so I can't say for certain. Check out time is at noon, which is another added bonus! It's easy to forget that you're in the center of one of the world's largest cities, when staying at Parker Guest House: it's quiet, clean, serene, and a welcome respite from the chaos and clamor of a major metropolis, and was probably the most relaxing way to end what, for us, was a sudden, hectic and stressful impromptu trip to California. When we finally checked out and headed for home, it was probably the first time during the whole trip we felt rested and refreshed, and I think that says more about this place than any number of stars on a review ever could.

You can also easily walk or do mass transit to other places - I did a walk up to the Painted Ladies and then hung out a bit in the lower Haight and then easily walked back down to this area. The establishment also has a kitchen area so you can go pick up sundry and supplies at the local Trader Joe's (just 2 or 3 blocks away) if you want to limit how much you spend eating out (something I plan to do next time) and the kitchen has free tea and instant coffee so the basics if you want to ease into your day. If you want the full "bathroom in my room" sort of thing there are other places but this is my 2nd time here and it is still great - there are stairs and no elevator so keep that in mind but the price versus location is wonderful - if noise bothers you, then bring ear plugs for the weekend - not super loud but if you are not used to noise, it might keep you up a bit - but I've found it to be a super safe area - you can catch the Bart most of the way (to the civic center) and then you catch the 21 3 stops to this location. Do note, you don't have someone on staff there but available by text and you use a key app, that they notify the day you are checking in - which I think works well - it is nice to have an affordable way to get out of the heat in Phoenix, especially in the summer, and I'm not looking for a resort experience but a place to lay my head and keep my stuff while I go enjoy the sights and sounds, and amazing food and drink, of the local area.

COVID completely ruined this place and it seems like they're under new management because they have been completely unaccommodating. I booked under non-refundable and needed to change my dates of stay. When I rebooked, they charged me way more than the advertised price when I checked that same hour. When I asked about this price discrepancy, they just replied with "the prices change everyday". It's not even worth staying here anymore. The bathrooms aren't kept up as well, there's no front desk, and no breakfast spread. $535 for 3 nights vs the 410 that it was listed for? They're trying to take advantage of the fact that I booked non-refundable! I've been trying to get in contact with management and all I'm told is that management doesn't work at hours so I'd be unable to call the line. "Email them" is what I was told to do. It seems like they don't email back either. The Inn holds a lot of special memories for me but I will never go back.

Once a grand mansion for some turn-of-the-century San Franciscan elite, it's now home to a bunch of uniquely decorated rooms that each feel like you've stepped back in time (think grandma's floral wallpaper, elaborate drapes, and an occasional doily). If you can, snag one of the rooms with a deep soaking tub--best decision ever after a long day exploring the city. And don't miss the rustic in-ground hot tub in the back garden--it's a dreamy place to unwind under the stars. Plus, the small rooftop terrace is a total hidden gem with sweeping views of the San Francisco skyline--perfect for a sunrise coffee or a sunset glass of wine. However... as of 2026, I don't even know if it's open for business anymore. The website is dead, and people are saying they can't even get a hold of anyone. The building was sold in January and the business status is murky. All I know is, Marty and Connie were the beating heart and soul of this establishment. Unfortunately, people do age and eventually pass. I don't think that either of them has passed, but from what I heard, there was a sudden medical issue and they're not coming back. I hope that the new ownership can get it together and bring back this amazing place to continue as a gem of a place to stay in SF, but... not holding my breath. :-(

It is an adorable little apartment, full of charm, and with a gorgeous garden all our own. It has everything we need to live a normal life - to cook our meals, to relax, to clean up a little. And it has the sweetest owner who lives in the house upstairs and is both present and also un-intruding. I can't imagine a more ideal place for our first few weeks back in the states or a more charming landlord. I'm almost sad to leave it in another week and a half to move into our own apartment! This would also make a great vacation rental for someone who wants to stay in the real parts of San Francisco as opposed to the tourist centers.

The Mission Garden Retreat itself is a fabulous one bedroom apartment - a great space with new furniture and appliances. You can tell that Dan and his family (the proprietors) have put a lot of time and resources into making this place really nice. We ate out for pretty much every meal, but could see that the kitchen would be very useful for longer stays. The bed was really comfortable and the garden outside was beautiful. The neighborhood is very busy and bustling (only a few blocks from 24th St.), but the Garden Retreat itself was super quiet since it backs up to the garden and not the street. Besides the amenities, the location just can't be beat. The Mission is a fantastic local neighborhood with rich culture and some fantastic places to eat. El Metate was great. We like to eat at good beer restaurants when we're out, so The Monk's Kettle off Valencia was a short trip and was excellent. Dan was a great host. We felt comfortable and relaxed the entire time. If we are in the area again, we are definitely checking the Garden Retreat's availability.

Umbrella Bus barely got our passengers from Point A to Point B, did not do so efficiently, and arguably didn't do it terribly safely. We booked Umbrella for a 54-passenger shuttle to transport wedding guests from our wedding hotel to our ceremony venue, and then from the ceremony venue to the reception venue ($1050 total). I confirmed this itinerary with their staff by email and phone several times (at least three), because they kept sending me invoices that only showed a partial itinerary, but they assured me that they had the correct itinerary written down and would read off the correct itinerary on the phone when I called. On the first trip, the bus driver got the bottom of the bus stuck on a steep hill, rendering it unable to move. Guests had to walk nearly a quarter mile from where the bus got stuck to the ceremony site. The bus was also blocking the entrance to the park where the ceremony was held, meaning that park visitors and several wedding guests who were behind it were severely delayed in getting into the park. We had a couple of guests who missed some of the wedding ceremony because the bus blocked the entrance for so long. It would've been 3.5 stars if only for this, since it wasn't 100% the driver's fault, though he should really have known what the buses he drives are able to handle. On the second trip, though, despite me confirming the destinations in the itinerary with Umbrella MULTIPLE TIMES, the driver had somehow been given the wrong destination by their dispatch, and took guests back to the hotel instead of to the wedding reception venue. My family members had to argue with the driver, who insisted that he'd been told to take everyone back to the hotel, and "I'm only doing two trips, how will people get back to the hotel?" but he eventually relented and took everyone to the reception instead, but meant that most of the guests were delayed by quite a bit in getting to the reception. This definitely wasn't the driver's fault though, and was clearly the fault of the company/dispatch. He did eventually take the guests where they needed to go, which we appreciate.

The European Guest House is on the cutting edge of adventure lodging and extreme health risks…read more Upon your arrival you will most surely find it difficult to find anyone to answer the door, leaving you out in a crack-alley, waiting for someone to either rob you or let you inside. Upon admittance into this quality resort, you will surely wonder why it costs so much money as you are led down the corridor into a shabby room set aside for receiving guests. No need for a lobby or etiquette! This is adventure lodging at its best. Complete with exercise facilities consisting of STAIRS up which you will surely lug your bags (if you decline the creepy guy's offer to take them for you), getting the best workout that a rat trap can offer. When not lugging bags around, you may find exercise as you attempt to dodge the unsavoury individuals who enjoy hanging out in the lounge and looming in hallways in the wee hours of the morning. For those who think health is for sissies, the European Guest House offers up a rare treat: unclean furniture. It doesn't matter what; EGH doesn't cut corners here! Only the finest dirt and vermin on the couches in the lounge, or even in the beds! Unfortunately, the lack of furniture in the rooms prevents maximum dirt-exposure, but fear not! What you cannot pick up from your room will surely be caught in the bathrooms. From the mould covering the shower door and walls, to the bottle of *mystery* shampoo lovingly stored on the window sill for any unsuspecting... er, that is, as a courtesy for guests. What's in it? Well, it's white and oozing out of the top, at this point, it's anybody's guess! Take a gamble, take your chances (or play it safe and bring your own shampoo). Good news for all those bathers out there! Touching the shower walls is a guarantee!! Unless you stand stick-straight with your arms at your sides and simply rotate left-to-right under the shower spray, you are most assured to scrape some part of mould-encrusted shower with your naked body. WIN! I can hear what you're saying. "Oh, I can get this sort of filth anywhere. What else does EGH have?" Well, I'm glad you asked, because only the EGH can offer something no other lodgings offer: excitement and danger while you sleep! Forget bed bugs, how does an un-impeded risk of falling 4-storeys down to your death sound? Good? GREAT! With their patented no-window-or-screen technology and with a thoughtfully placed bed right against the window, guests who sleep on the 4th floor will be guaranteed night after night of gut-wrenching excitement every time they roll over in their sleep. "Will I roll out the window?" "Is tonight the night I die?" These are some of the questions they will ask themselves over and over again. If you're lucky, it could be you! Wait, you may be asking yourself, "Gosh, this sounds too good to be true! Is there anything you're not telling me?" Yes, I admit, I'm holding out. Here are some other fine features of the EGH you can look forward to, should you decide to partake in this adventure: - Tiny rooms - Fashionable hooks on the wall for hanging clothes and bags (who needs a dresser?) - Dirty bathrooms - No toilet paper (bring your own and keep it in your room) - Did I mention the questionable individual hanging outside your door for a few hours at 2am? - Carrying all your valuables with you when you leave your room Bonus adventures include: - Getting your deposit back for your room key - Avoiding the creepy guy in the lounge who might keep hitting on you if you are female - Visiting the other floors to steal the toilet paper from their bathrooms Guaranteed Questionable-Fun for the whole family! "I stayed a whole week and don't know how I survived!" - Caro. A Pictures have been uploaded for enjoyment and proof of this review, including the mystery shampoo. Author's Note: In all seriousness, this all happened to me and my friend while we stayed here. This happened a couple years back, but judging from the reviews here, I'm sure this experience could be re-created if I (or you) were to visit again. Yes, I did lug 4 suitcases up the super-narrow stairs to avoid some creeper being in my room with me. We were given poor instructions to find the place and so ended up walking a few blocks down a crack alley (past crack addicts) to find the place, where we were left waiting outside. And yes, at 2am we found someone hanging in the hallway outside our door (just... standing there for a few hours), making it difficult to slip into the bathroom. I did have to think fast to get my deposit back and then hang out outside the EGH to get a taxi at 5am (surprisingly, the crack alley wasn't as threatening at that time of night. Go figure.) What an adventure, at least it's a story to tell, right?
