The amazing diversity of programming and depth of this station can catch almost anyone's ear. What is refreshing, is all the people playing the music are volunteers, who do not have to follow a corporate format. You will not hear a loop of the same songs day after day. Each 1-4 hour show has their own genre theme, but beyond that can play anything within their theme. I am always surprised by something new every time I listen. The one issue that is troubling is that their federal funds have been cut by 200k recently. Since it is a non-profit station, they rely heavily on listeners to help support the station, and especially during their funds drive this month. I really hope it can continue over the years. Check their website for programming and take a listen. It's one of those rare gems on the airways.

What once felt like a cultural cornerstone now feels like a platform for division. The constant use of phrases like "white people this" and "white people that" is not only inappropriate it's hypocritical. If any other group were spoken about in the same way, there would be outrage. Imagine the backlash if someone on the air said "Black people" in the same generalizing, negative tone. It wouldn't be tolerated and rightfully so. Hot 97 should be a space that brings people together, not pushes them apart through repeated racial generalizations and political bias. This isn't about politics it's about respect and integrity. Radio should be a place for music, culture, and conversation not stereotyping and division. Unfortunately, until this changes, I won't be listening anymore. We deserve better from a platform with this much reach and influence.

Columbia Radio! No, this isn't an all Shakira station, it's…read moreColumbia University's student run radio station. They mostly play jazz, but they play other stuff when they wanna. You can pick this radio station up on the FM dial if you're on the upper East side, but if not, you can tune it in on your smart speaker. Since this station is so far on the left side of the dial, it's a community run station, and therefore they can't play regular commercials like 101 Rock. Instead, they can only play public service announcements that tell you important messages like to look both ways before crossing the street, or don't huff paint. My favorite thing about this station is that when the campus administrators shut down the campus when they were having massive protests, regular reporters couldn't get in and see what was going on. That's where WKCR shone- their DJs acted like impromptu reporters, shining a light on what's going on around campus when it seemed like the dean was trying to cover things up and sweep away protests. CON: They repeat ads (is the ad team looking for new ads?) and the worst is KARS 4 KIDS, which you will surely hear with the earworm jingle if you listen for at least 15 minutes. WCBS should have the decency and dignity to refuse to air this commercial. KARS 4 KIDS is a very poorly rated charity (check Charity Navigator). By continuing to broadcast ads for KARS 4 KIDS, WCBS radio is adding legitimacy to this bogus charity.
