Thankful for this radio station which got me through a horrendous commute with its words of wisdom and sport-filled music.

If you are adventurous in your music searches and tastes, try taking a listen to WFMU.org 91.1 FM…read moreradio station broadcasting out of the NYC area and also worldwide internet. The amazing diversity of programming and depth of this station can catch almost anyone's ear. What is refreshing, is all the people playing the music are volunteers, who do not have to follow a corporate format. You will not hear a loop of the same songs day after day. Each 1-4 hour show has their own genre theme, but beyond that can play anything within their theme. I am always surprised by something new every time I listen. The one issue that is troubling is that their federal funds have been cut by 200k recently. Since it is a non-profit station, they rely heavily on listeners to help support the station, and especially during their funds drive this month. I really hope it can continue over the years. Check their website for programming and take a listen. It's one of those rare gems on the airways.

The music curated is a varied, eclectic, freeform heaven of sorts. You will be attracted to its organic community. There are events at Monty Hall where one can be an anonymous tourist. Check out the Record Fair as well. WFMU has broadened and inspired me in my own artful pursuits. So listen in, tune out the mainstream noise and dream.

Thank goodness for these guys!…read more I woke up one day with a burning desire to start podcasting - but had no clue how to do anything on the equipment / recording side. I took to Google, found Radio Free and booked a recording session. I have since been back multiple times and don't plan on purchasing any equipment because I Love recording here. Tom (the owner) is awesome over email, he has made scheduling (and rescheduling) completely seamless. He also was kind enough to give me some great pointers on how to launch my new pod. The studio space is clean with all the equipment you need, and they keep all of my recordings organized in a dropbox file. I cannot speak highly enough of Radio Free Brooklyn. If you're in need of a recording studio - this is your place!

Unfortunately Radio Free Brooklyn is not a place I would recommend to record a podcast at…read more The engineer interrupted the conversation a few times, and the host's audio abruptly disappeared about halfway through the recording. The conversation was almost impossible to salvage because of the gain issue. Also, there were constant interjections of "macbook sounds" throughout the file that was sent to us, such as popping, swooshing, and various other noises that come from deleting files. I hate to write this review as they were very easy to work with in regards to ironing out the logistics of the date and time. Unfortunately, we trusted them with our podcast, and it was ruined by Calvin the engineer. Absolutely infuriating.

WBGO FM is a wonderful non-profit radio station that not only represents the music of Jazz, but honors the artists and gives background stories and the history behind the music. That's a big plus. Here are a few famous jazz quotes from the legends: "Don't play what's there, play what's not there" - Miles Davis "If you have to ask what jazz is, you'll never know" - Louis Armstrong "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture" - Thelonius Monk "Jazz is a music made by and for people who have chosen to feel good in spite of conditions." -- Johnny Griffin "You can play a shoestring if you're sincere." -- John Coltrane Amen

WBGO doesn't have commercials because they are a public station. But the DJ's give you background & insight on the music they play. I live for that! And I love Jeh Johnson. He would do guest spots. He's Jeh Johnson former General Counsel of the Department of Defense! And he loves good music like us regular folk! Then they gave him some time of his own. Listen in. It's worth it! 1-31-2026
