I go primarily for yoga three or four times a week. Teacher quality is high, the main studio is clean and pleasant. There are lots of time options from early morning to evening. It works! I was at a dedicated yoga studio close to work, which I loved, but now, working at home, this location saves me on travel time, membership, and gives me options to try and do more things. There is a good booking app so you always know what classes are coming up, and availability, and if you wish it, paid options for one on one coaching. I have held gym memberships of one kind or another for at least 20 years (in different provinces,…read morecities and countries) and can say without any hesitation that this little gym is a gem. It's privately AND locally owned - that alone should be enough. Workout newbies get easily impressed by the latest trendy gyms but once you get a few years of experience you realize what's important and what's not. For the few months that I went (I found a gym closer to home), they often had new equipment. The place has very friendly staff - never pushy like those franchises desperate to meet quotas. It's very clean too. If I didn't have to lug my gear around I would be back there in a heartbeat.

That said, I've been working from…read morehome a lot recently and felt I needed something to help me get moving even when the weather is yucky outside. Elgin Fitness was a great choice for me because I don't feel any pressure from staff or members and there isn't a big financial strain. I was given a day pass to try out the gym before committing to a membership. There were no sign up fees and there isn't a contract (if you sign up for automatic payments, they want you to stay around for at least 5 months though) and no penalty for cancelling (just a 30 day notice). The rates are really reasonable--we got a couple's plan for $80 and you can't really beat that anywhere else. I really like that the membership includes access to yoga classes. I went to one today, my first ever, and found it to be a relaxing and invigorating experience. The instructor wasn't overly serious and she was open and made the environment feel safe. When I couldn't hold a pose for as long, or had to modify a pose, there was no judgement and I felt positive about my body. The change rooms have been clean and well kept every time I've gone. They even have hair dryers! There are showers, bathrooms, lockers, and a space for beautifying oneself. The change rooms have never been crowded and I've never had a problem getting a locker (free, just bring your own lock). The gym itself is everything that I need and nothing more. There are a variety of cardio machines--treadmills, stair climbers, ellipticals, upright bikes, recumbent bikes. I've never had to wait for a machine and everyone I've seen use them remembers to wipe them down after use. There is also a good assortment of weight training equipment and a stretching room. The stretching room has swiss balls and mats and the yoga classes are held here--which means the room isn't open to everyone when a class is in session. So if you're within walking distance of this gym, I would recommend trying it out.

I'd tried a bunch of the big corporate gyms and always quit. I'm not even sure why I decided to try Greco's 10-week plan. It's pricy, for sure, but some girls I work with had raved about it, and I knew a new one had just opened on Sparks. From the start, everything about this place appealed to me - knowledgable trainers, friendly owner, good space, short (45 min) classes. I wanted to die my first time out, but I slowly got stronger. And it's always fun. The style is crossfit-esque - weights and cardio mixed together - and the classes are no more than 25 (though if you pick the right times, you can end up with just 5-10 others). The change rooms are too small, but that's never been a huge problem for me. The location is great for those who live and work downtown. Basically, if you're willing to shell out some extra bucks, I can't recommend this place enough. I've been a member for six months now, and it's still never boring - and only annoying when Justin Bieber is on the music rotation.

While the gym itself has great equipment and trainers, the front desk experience has become consistently frustrating. Most (not all) of the front desk staff are unfriendly and rarely make eye contact or greet members. It often feels unwelcoming walking in. There are frequently no towels ready, which is inconvenient and reflects a lack of preparation. During the winter, staff don't ensure that people remove their boots, so the path to the change room becomes a wet, messy hazard. It's frustrating for those of us who follow the rules, only to walk through a slushy floor that isn't cleaned up promptly. I've also repeatedly seen staff making TikToks instead of helping members or maintaining the facility. Meanwhile, basic upkeep and member assistance seem to be neglected. It's disappointing to see this decline after being a loyal member for so long. I hope management takes this feedback seriously. A gym should feel clean, organized, and welcoming -- and right now, that's not the experience being delivered.

First time I called the owner Jen was super sweet and let me try out a different location before making a decision. Unfortunately the location near my new place just isn't as nice as Hunt Club's. I called again to cancel and this time Nik (also an owner) picked up. Maybe he was in a bad mood or it was too early in the morning, but from the moment he picked up, his abrasive and rude attitude threw me off. Anyways he said he would cancel my membership and then abruptly hung up on me. I'm just saying, it was uncalled for and very unprofessional, which is so unfortunate because it really ruined my perception of this place. Nik, if you see this review, I hope you had a banana and sat outside for a bit and I hope that helped.
