Making Sourdough Pancakes from provided batter on a provided griddle. Ask the story of the sourdough starter!! Its an oldie!
    Kayli T.

My first hostel stay was here back in April 2012. Good place to ease into it!! I loved the environment, the cleanliness, the adorable house, the people. Met some cute European guys at breakfast....there are worse things than eating scrumptious sourdough pancakes (batter & griddle provided then, and I think still are) whilst conversing with a man from France, one from England, and another from some other European country. Great hostel! Small.

We love it here!who knew we could have spent our old rougher nights as a couple just houses down in distance to old home in the most peaceful place we've slept in all of slo thus far. If only we knew now what we knew then...we'd be rich famous and on a yacht...but for now here will do.

This is a very cute and welcoming hostel. It's within easy walking distance from the train and a nice walk from the little town.

Location is amazing, a short walk from the train and a cute little park. And it's a nice walk Way from the little town with awesome restaurants and shops. The hostel is really welcoming and it's quite clean. They have Sourdough pancakes in the morning and they are very interesting. Beds are softer than average.

Picture I took of the front after my stay. Beautiful place. -Joseph

It looked super cute, but it seemed unconventional. I might be okay with it, but would my husband be? (The answer is yes- we loved it!) There are six rooms. It is self check-in. It used to be an auto repair garage. I can attest that everything in the photos look just as lovely if not even better in person. I booked a room exactly a month in advance. Everything truly was done electronically. The access code to the hotel and room is emailed and texted to you. I have to say that I loved not having to grab a key to put in my pocket every time I walked out. We had our pup with us, so we took quick relief trips outside. I didn't have to worry about getting locked out. When you walk in, you immediately notice the different art pieces placed around the hotel. There are also paintings in the rooms. There are two bicycles near the front door for you to use (I'm assuming, but we didn't utilize them). Everything was immaculately clean -- everything in our room & bathroom and the shared kitchen and lounge space. There is hand sanitizer in the shared spaces as well as a hand soap by the kitchen sink. The soap and shampoo brands are great quality. There are extra blankets in your room as well as in the lounge (I noticed them neatly folded in a basket. I was up early Sunday morning to take my dog out for a walk. I came back to make myself a cup of coffee w/ the coffee and individual French presses provided. This is when I met Kelly, manager of the Butler Hotel. In a word, she's fantastic. She is friendly, kind, and truly made our stay even more special. I mentioned that it was our 20 year anniversary. Later that day when we got back to our room, there was a small bottle of champagne, glasses, caramels, and a sweet note wishing us a happy anniversary. On the weekends, they bring in fresh baked pastries from The Splash Cafe, which is directly across the street. In the afternoons, there is complimentary wine. We stayed in Room 1, which is the first room to the left. It was comfortable and the size was great. I think it's one of the bigger rooms, according to the website. The bathroom, in my opinion, was large. It had the ADA roll-in shower with an adjustable height and removable shower head. I read that there were complaints about the noise, but we didn't experience loud noise from the street nor from within the hotel. We could tell there was another dog next door, but it wasn't noisy in our opinion. For anyone worried about no on-site staff, do not worry! I accidentally knocked over a glass in our room. Kelly leaves her phone number if you need anything. In that instance, she offered to come right away, but we opted to wait until we left for the day to have it vacuumed. Can you tell by the length of this review that we loved our stay? Lol

We passed by it and immediately wanted to get a room after seeing how cute it was! So, we called, asked about any openings they had, and they had 2 rooms available so we asked for one of them. It all went downhill from there. Upon arriving, the door was locked. I suppose this isn't that big of a deal, but you are to call the number of the inn and ask them to open it up for you. We checked in, got our key, and immediately regretted it. This place is not just dirty, disgusting, and filthy; it also flat-out smells. Not to mention the place is just...creepy. The entire b&b just smelled grotesque. I couldn't quite place it -- maybe a combination of old, used cat litter and something rotten? The place was dirty, stacked high with old magazines and newspapers, the carpet was absolutely the most disgusting carpet I have ever seen. And it doesn't stop there! The room we got was the White Lace room, and it wasn't much cleaner than the rest of the house. The curtains were dirty, the bed was creaky, the shower was moldy, everything had obviously not been cleaned in a while. The bed covers were absolutely disgusting, like genuinely felt gross, sticky, and dirty to the touch. The room was cute, but gross. The creepy part was that the room key is the same as the front door key...so, yikes. It seemed as though there were some long-term residents there, one of whom had their door open and was coughing and hacking...ew. The guy kept talking about ghosts, which we were just not into. Not to mention the service -- the guy made a comment, and asked if me and my long-term girlfriend were sisters. We just nodded and agreed, as we're not from around there and just weren't really sure what reception of us being gay/queer would be. But what a presumptuous comment to make. So, after all this, and after we put down $200 towards this awful room, we decided that no way were we staying in this bedraggled, disgusting room. We left. We were there for no more than half on hour, and I am not exaggerating. So here's the real kicker; the owner of the b&b called us, claiming that we had left "disturbing stuff" in one of their showers. Again, we were there for no longer than 30 minutes. We didn't even use the showers. It was obviously a gimmick to get us to pay even more money for "damages." We froze our card (just in case) and didn't take their calls. Out of all the nastiness that went down at this place, this was the thing that left the worst taste in my mouth. Anyways, because this place hasn't had a review in over a year, I can only imagine that whomever stayed here has been silenced with financial threats, like claims of leaving something nasty in the shower. Either that or they have been silenced in other ways. I don't know, but I would never in a million years recommend this place. Go literally anywhere else.

Just off the 101 north heading towards SLO or Paso is the famous hotel, Madonna Inn. The last time I've visited the place we stayed in their Kona Rock Room. A fun caveman style room with boulders as the walls. Also the funky shower made out of rocks. The whole concept of rock room. Not just that, each room has a different theme so whatever mood you like, the place is your oyster. We stopped by just to show the property off to some friends who's never been but have alway wondered about the place. It's off the freeway so you won't miss it. The cute facade and the massive grassy knoll out front. Big decent size parking lot utilizes more for the restaurant as there's another lot heading towards the room. Of course everyone comes for the hotel but you can't miss the funky pink restaurant. A staples at the property. Let's say valentines on crack times 1000. It's funky but the cutest. It was closed when we arrived but I believe it's more for dinner. The cafe to the side was packed so that does get utilized often. There was a major line waiting for a table. You could walk through the restaurant to check it out. They were setting up the banquet room for a wedding reception happening later that day. Right when you walk into the restaurant, you're greeted with the pink room. Beautiful pink tufted booth similar to old school Vegas mob vibes but hot pink. Behind that is the bar with similar concept. A beautiful large stone fireplace situated in between the entrance and the bar area. There's a staircase that leads you upstairs to the shops. To the left is the main boutique with pretty much everything. Dresses, apparel, gifts, male and female clothing, costumes but really are gowns, shoes and so on. Cowboys vibes with a lot of the clothing. Some things are very eccentric but quite funky and cool. The more upscale of the boutique. The opposite side is where you find more of the souvenir and kids items as well as all the sweets and toys. There's also a cute little secret garden behind the property. Of course we happened to walk in while they were setting up for a wedding. It's nothing too crazy but a cute garden area with beautiful plants and colorful bold choices of colors growing. Of course the main focal piece, the cute lake right in the middle. Most wedding will take place near it. If you haven't been here, it's worth a stop and wander through. Grab a meal at the cafe if you fancy a more elegant night, dinner in the main pink room. If you get a chance to stay at the property, the many funky rooms to choose from. It's a cute and fun place that's a staples in California. Everyone knows about the Madonna Inn. Love it. I'm not a big meateater, and I realize it's a steakhouse, but every other good steakhouse I've been to has absolutely amazing ALL the other options, veggie sides, veggie options, variety of seafood. Madonna *could* do this, so why do they continue choosing not to. I settles on a portabello mushroom. I didn't like it. I just connected with a friend on Facebook who said it perfectly: "It was SO BAD when I was there. Soggy portabella mushrooms stuffed with unflavored bread and supposedly herbs but I doubt it based on the flavor profile, limp steamed vegetables, and unflavored polenta cakes. Not even salted. Seriously dog food." And I realized this was my exact experience, and it's prompting me to write this review. You don't have to be vegetarian to like veggies. DO BETTER Madonna.
