Grateful Souls Hostel - Behold... The Hostile Hostel!

I've stayed here two times and it's only gotten better since last year…read more Sara knows how to run a good place to stay. First off, you can't beat the location. You're on the beach. Second, the house is beautiful. Third, everything you need is in the house. Hammocks, stove, grill, outdoor shower to clean off after the beach, the only reason to leave is to go buy food. I can't recommend this place enough.

While staying in the Hostile Hostel my boyfriend and I didn't have the greatest experience. One of…read morethe former owners was anything but professional (Sara). When things got tough and the shit hit the fan all Sara could do is say it wasn't her fault, when we were following house rules. Needless to say she left an incredibly sour taste. Laura was away and was not able to help us at the time. Once Laura got back from her vacation she was wonderful. Helping us anyway she could while dealing with the nightmare that is Sara. Laura refunded our stay and has been doing everything in her power to make things right, a true professional and kind person. Now that Laura has a new location in NY and has severed all ties with Sara I would be more then happy to stay with her. Below is a warning to all...The location in PR is great but the owner (Sara is TERRIBLE) stay at your own risk... DO NOT STAY AT GRATEFUL SOULS HOSTILE in PR. AWFUL HOST, beyond selfish and rude as can be. If you have an issue...Sara will hang up on you or ignore you.

Sol Casita - Comunal Kitchen

If I could have given this place 3 and a half stars I would have. This is a budget friendly option…read morewith lots to offer. My boyfriend and I wanted to try something new and came across Sol Casita on Airbnb but the room they had available did not have a private bathroom. We searched online and found that they had their own site and so we booked through there instead of Airbnb. This particular room did come with it's own bathroom and shower. The bathroom itself was a bit odd. You had to step up into it and step down out of it and it had shutter doors. The shutter doors only went half way down. The toilet and shower were one. No dividers of any sort. Sol Casita did supply shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. We didn't use it but it was a nice extra. AC worked very well, bed to me was comfortable but my boyfriend wouldn't agree. Shared kitchen, sitting area, and dock were the star of Sol Casita. I enjoyed it, although you meet different people and not everyone is respectful of common areas. My only real complaint was the mosquitos. I don't know how they got into our room but they were there and it was annoying and made us absolutely miserable. I'm glad we gave it a go but I think Sol Casita better suits folks moving from place to place and just need to stay for a night, maybe two. It wasn't ideal for us. We enjoy exploring but coming back to rest our heads at a location that feels like home. Price was excellent, beautiful views, authentic Puerto Rican neighborhood, great restaurant that was located one house away. A bit on the louder side. Parking wasn't the best but wasn't horrible either and within a 5 minute walk we found a little bakery that was perfect. If anyone decides to stay here and is reading this, if you can take 5 minutes of your time and buy an apple and give it to the horse by the recommended parking area that the host will email you after you book, I would be so thankful. I meant to do it and it's been on my mind that I didn't. :( The best part of Sol Casita is that it's very close to two of my absolute favorite beaches. Playa Sucia and Combate Beach. The Salt flats and Annie's is also very close. All a must visit. All in all I would stay here again for a night or two but no more.

I picked Posada San Francisco because of location and lack of kids. There are no adults-only…read moreresorts on Puerto Rico, and I figured a hostel was my best bet. And it turned out to be a great idea. The location is perfect. On the outer edge of Old San Juan (OSJ) you are only minutes away from anything in the area but out of the huge tourist crush from the other end of town. When looking at a map of Old San Juan you will think it's bigger than it is. To walk from the Posada to El Morro on the opposite tip of OSJ might take 15-20 minutes at a leisurely pace. I booked the standard double bed private shared room. It cost me $58 per night because I had to pay for 2 people instead of just myself. The single supplement sucks, but it's still inexpensive. The room was clean, clean, clean. And the satellite TV and air conditioning worked. I had to share bathrooms but one was always available when I needed it and they were always relatively clean if not just clean. I appreciated that the other guests during my stay were not slobs. The women working the desk and the one man I saw regularly were always polite and friendly. No issues with service. I used the washer and dryer while I was there, but I got up early to do it so there was no wait. And they are both in good condition - either new or very well-kept. All in all, my four night stay cost me $252 which includes taxes and online processing fees. That amount would have gotten me one night at a resort or hotel. For the price and location, Posada San Francisco really can't be beat, and I would stay here again. Tip: Because I stayed on the 6th floor, I didn't interact much with the other guests. If you're on the 4th floor with the dorms, you'll meet more people. Tip 2: They rent bikes for cheap. Don't forget that. I did.

Perfect location for safe area of Old San Juan. It's right in front of a trolly stop (free around…read moreOSJ) and across from Plaza Colon. Lots of restaurants and tourist shops around to venture towards and located beside the fort. It's a great location, and with another gal pal - I felt safe walking the streets around the area even in the evenings. For $34/night including taxes and fees, it's totally worth the humble hostel environment. Great balcony views, huge kitchen on 5th floor, small fridge in room, flat screen tv and personal AC unit. Rooms open with key cards and on my floor (6th) there were three bathrooms to share on the hall. Bathrooms are not dorm style where multiple ppl are in them but single bathrooms where you close the door and lock behind you. One has a shower stall and the other an actual tub. I Never had to fight for the bathroom or wait. I saw a cleaning lady everyday and the bathrooms were clean but bring your own toiletries and even a hand towel to dry off. You do get a bath towel for each person in the room. Certainly not bad at all ...

They send you check-in instructions by email and text. Be aware--THERE ARE STAIRS to get up to the rooms. This is pretty common for hostels though. The room I was in--4 bed women only dorm--was clean. The door to get in had a number keypad for security and they also had small lockers for your stuff...bring your own lock though! I liked that the beds each had a little curtain for additional privacy. Bed sheet and towel are included as part of your stay/standard room rate. They had a group chat you can join on WhatsApp. Met some cool people to hangout with. Also, most people I ran into within the common areas were really nice. Additionally, tons of restaurants and bars are in the area. Maybe the only inconvenience is that their kitchen area is closed until 7 or 8 am. If you're planning on waking up early for excursions, that might be something you need to plan around.

It is very close to the airport and everything else in San Juan. If you plan to stay mostly in San Juan you could get away with just ubering but we did rent a car. There is not lot but we had no problem finding street parking for the week that we stayed. We stayed in the Muse room. To be honest, this was expensive and more than I would have liked to spend but the hotel was so good it was worth it. You are a block from the beach and they provide beach towels and chairs. We did two beach days near the hotel and it was honestly perfect. The beach is amazing, very blue even though it's in the city. I felt perfectly safe walking around this area. It is technically in a gated community so it is very nice. Right outside the gated area are a bunch of restaurants. The food at dreamcatcher was also very good. They provide free coffee every morning and then pay as you go food from 8am-1pm. Everything I ate was very delicious. The menu changes frequently so if you see something that sounds good, get it! My favorite thing was the tofu huevos rancheros. It was incredible. They serve a dinner on Friday nights that was $65pp but we skipped to try some other things. The courtyard is also very cute, great place to get pictures and sit back and relax. I can't wait to come back. Puerto Rico has my heart!
