I was horrified and transferred to another hospice. Then they retaliated against the best worker they had that had helped me the most and put all the blame on her! I'm still shocked by my experience with Alamo. The details: My mother had an infection that had lasted for months, open bed sores and disturbing hallucinations and night terrors. I kept asking for an antibiotic and a medication that would help keep her comfortable. Then they fired the manager/nurse I signed up with and then both of their nurses quit. They hired a new manager/nurse named Erin, I spoke to her about my concerns. It had almost been a month since my mom's nurse had quit. The only people that worked at Alamo that had been helping me were the two nurses aides that came regularly. Then came a series of failures on the new manager/nurse Erin's part, I had to send my mom to the hospital for treatment of her advanced infection because she had began to bleed and was terribly sick. I called an ambulance for my mom and she received the antibiotics she needed and a full checkup. The manager Erin said it made Alamo Hospice look bad and she devised a plan to call adult protective services on me to cover her butt and make it look like Alamo hospice was not at fault. I was really hurt and shocked because I had been so patient with them so I immediately called another hospice company and they requested my records from Alamo to transfer. Alamo did not send the records for two more days until I texted them and told them they must comply and transfer my mom's records immediately. During this time when my mom was not getting proper care the only two people from Alamo that were helping me and being there for my mom and I were two aides. After I transferred out of Alamo, the manager Erin turned her wrath on to one of the aides, wrote the aid up and blamed her for everything, when she was one of two people from Alamo who was actually helping me. Erin did not take action to help my mother, she did not answer the phone on multiple occasions, she sent an aide when she was the nurse on call. When I called her to report bleeding coming out of my mother she said oh I can swing by and take a look 3 hours later she still hasn't shown up and that's why I had to call the ambulance. Erin has retaliated against me I and used an employee as a scapegoat. Nobody needs all of this when they're trying to take care of a dying loved one. Absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting experience. We are now with Three oaks hospice and it's like night and day!

And our nurses are prompt with great communication to the patient's family members. I believe in our mission statement, "No one dies alone, afraid or in pain." With our Peaceful Passing program we truly dont want anyone passing away alone afraid or in pain. Our Veterans Initiative is the best around, and our volunteer program director Cathy is super, you wont get any better anywhere else. She has a serious passion for what she does. Our CNAs are loved by all of our patients! They get to know our patients and have big hearts. They have very vigilant eyes and report concerns to the nurses right away. And I dont know about you, but do I dont usually check in between each of my toes for skin issues or wounds,but THEY DO! If you want the best hospice care around, its definitely Alamo Hospice.

Everyone we dealt with at Devotion was an angel, providing us with top notch, quality care - but I must especially single out Mya (my mom's aide - who came and bathed her each week) and Marcie, her nurse, who was the most incredible person!!! She was (literally) available to me 24/7 - even when she was undergoing some health issues of her own! She kept me informed and prepared for what lay ahead. I feel like she is now a forever friend! To begin, their intake nurses are rough, belligerent and detached. The lady we got could care less about my mother, she just wanted to do the minimum and get out. Not a single commitment was upheld, not one. We called for support and help four times in the first week and the average time to hear back from someone was two hours, then another two hours for a nurse to arrive. So if you have an emergency, just call the ambulance and have the hospital take care of it, it's faster, and your loved one will suffer less. Now, as a result of me firing them, they became hostile, threatened to make me pay for equipment they left behind and failed to retrieve. They never took into consideration that my mom had died and their employees, having missed the appointment to pick up the equipment, lied and said a dead woman was preventing them from getting it. We choose to go with another company who was hands down better suited for caring for end of life patients. Houston Hospice is a money game, you are a dollar sign, if you are cool with that, then use them.

When my mother was discharged home, we were told her equipment would be delivered the day before discharge. That did not happen. We were also told a hospice nurse would be at the house waiting to assess her when she arrived home. That also did not happen. I had to call multiple times just to find out where the equipment was and when a nurse would arrive. We then learned she had not even been fully admitted yet. It took several days to sort everything out during a very stressful time. One nurse who came out did not appear to know how to use the oxygen equipment. A week into hospice care, we still had not seen a nurse aide and again had to call to ask what was going on. The organization has felt extremely disorganized from the start. Communication between admissions and the clinical team does not appear coordinated, and the promises made to our family were not followed through. Most concerning, the nurse assigned to care for my dying parent has spent significant time on her phone during visits rather than focused on patient care. This has been incredibly disappointing during one of the hardest times for our family. Families considering hospice should ask detailed questions and verify exactly what services will actually be provided and when.

The good employees were the ones who got run over by family members and made to have that sort of attitude at work because of the way they were put down, picked and nagged at by them. You were one of them Ms. Janice, you were one of the reasons I did not enjoy working at the smaller house. I could spend my whole 12 hours with your dad (who we all loved so much by the way, and who, if you would have just taken a step back and took a breather, was very happy and just fine for the most part until towards the end when it had just become too much) and it still wouldn't have been good enough. You spent "your life" running back and forth because of things that you specifically wanted and hovered over and watched and expected every caregiver to spend every second with your father when they had other residents and daily things to do and take care of and you would get very upset over things that I personally along with others feel you would over exaggerate and blow out of proportion. The food you speak of isn't actually at all what you say it was. I thought the food was delicious and always thought they were well fed & if the food wasn't up to your standards then I would have to say it would be the caregiver who wasn't cooking it properly because I always thought the menu & the meals that were prepared were great. I worked in other assisted living homes where I would not even serve anyone what they had prepared but the owner of A&B spends a lot of time, money and most of the time prepping meals that are made for the residents. As far as the RN, & the other things you spoke of .. there is an rn that is registered to a&b and is ON CALL 24/7 ...if needed. Above and beyond is an ASSISTED LIVING HOME. We do not provide hospice care, home health or physical therapy. However, yes, we provide information and have hospice, home health, and PT in our homes as the family chooses which company they would like for their loved one. Assisted living caregivers are not physical therapists or nurses. So we have companies who do that part. We clean, shower & feed Also, the owner of the assisted living home does not have to pay for your loved one to have PT, that I also haven't seen at other assisted living homes. Unless it's included In their facility and then added to "your dime" ... Toiletries, for their personal selves, etc, ARE PROVIDED BY THE FAMILY MEMBERS. Also, another thing that is done in other assisted living homes I've worked at. The owner has the home payments, utilities, employees, food, among MANY other things to pay for monthly.... As far as the appliances and the things you say didn't work weren't fixed etc, unfortunately during the time of your stay, the owners husband had cancer, and passed away in time. Things through my eyes were very well taken care of during that time as best as they could be and should have been understood by family members if it had taken more time than expected to get to, but it always got done & I remember watching him, even though he was dying of cancer, come in and handle things that needed to be done and got them done. So for you to say those things is appalling. From what I have gathered from previous friends and co-workers, you were asked to move your father. Which to me would seem that if you were this unhappy, for the 16 MONTHS you had your father there, why did it take the owner asking you to move (due to the constant nicking, picking & complaints and making all of the caregivers not want to work in that house) to move him? I would think if I had my loved one somewhere that I was that unhappy, I would have taken it upon myself to move them somewhere else. Fortunately for this company, you are the only review and person who has viewed this page on yelp, because they don't deserve that kind of slander from anyone. But luckily and hopefully with my review, if anyone happens to come across yours, they will read mine as well and see that Above and Beyond is not the place you mentioned, the owner & caregivers are not the kind of people you make them out to be, and the residents we have are very happy. Family members from past years still come to visit. Lots of our residents have lived there for years and have been more than happy with above and beyond and the 16+ years that they have been open, just goes to show that your review is certainly just your own personal feelings towards an experience you yourself made a difficult one.
