Lehto's Pasties - beef pastie

For those who don't know, a pasty (pasties=plural) is a Cornish meat hand pie that became prevalent…read morein the Upper Peninsula in the 1800s when copper miners would pack them for meals. The correct pronunciation is "pass-tee," not "paste-y" (that's something else). There are pasty places all around in the UP but we stopped at Lehto's on our way back downstate. The menu is simple: Beef pasties, served hot, cold, or frozen. That's it. You can get a side of gravy, a t-shirt, magnet, pop, and smoked fish to go as well. There is a great debate on what is best to accompany the pasty - gravy or ketchup. Apparently gravy is more common closer to the bridge, but the further North and West you get in the Upper Peninsula, the more likely you'll see them served with ketchup only. Luckily Nate and I had a bottle of ketchup in our cooler from camping over the weekend, so we tried our pasty with both. There are a few picnic tables outside Lehto's, so we chowed down and both agreed that we preferred the gravy. The pasty is a flaky pastry crust surrounding beef, potato, and rutabaga. There are lots of other versions and filling combinations, but this is what I believe is most traditional. I loved that the vegetables were cut into thin slices rather than chunks, as it made for a nicer eating experience without chunks falling out. You can eat them as a hand pie and dunk them in your preferred sauce. The filling was a little bland but they offered plenty of salt and pepper packets, and the gravy and ketchup helped. Definitely a must stop to get at least one pasty whenever you're in the UP!

The outside baked crust is crisp and tasty. My husband's beef pastie was filled with beef, similar to other posters pictures and he really enjoyed his. Everything was hot too I have a tough time eating beef so opted for the chicken option and while my sandwich was tasty, it was truly 95% potato, a tiny bit of carrots and just very, very little chicken. Maybe I got the bottom of the bowl or something, but it definitely needed more protein. He did have a veggie option available today as well. This place is super popular spot and the sandwiches are $8.50 each, we ordered a gravy, as per other Yelp recommendations and we shared that. It was an additional two dollars. He gives you a lot gravy!! Parking is very limited out front, but we found people were in and out pretty quick. There are a couple picnic tables where you can sit and eat but honestly, he really just doesn't have the room for that so get it to go. The owner seems super friendly, and I love the fact that so many people are supporting his business. Another UP box checked!

I couldn't decide what I wanted for a late breakfast, and I finally decided that pancakes or the…read morelike would hit the spot. I walked into Pancake Chef -- which is on the strip with all the other shops in Mackinaw City -- and there were hardly any people eating there, so I started to second-guess my choice. But, I was greeted warmly and quickly. They were switching from breakfast to lunch, and when I walked in, they still had the breakfast bar up but were also offering the salad bar. I took a look, but it didn't appeal to me, so I looked at the menu instead. What caught my eye was the banana bread French toast. It turned out to be amazing! Three large, thick pieces of banana nut bread turned into French toast and served with fresh fruit. It was so good that I didn't even want syrup or butter on it! I wasn't quite as hungry as I thought I was, so I only ate half of it at the time. But, being a good traveller, I had a cooler and ice with me, so it made my entire journey with me. Nothing like stepping into a car that smells of banana bread! I actually finished it after I got home. Even reheated several days later, it was still really good!

Most dishes that have a sauce. The chicken is almost the same. It's fairly heavily breaded with a sauce on it. Of course, with Chinese food it's laid in with oils. But there are a few things that I definitely enjoy although this time not quite as much as last. I find the service is wonderful. I find that the food is atypical of buffets and a little bit above some that I've been to the beef dishes. I just feel the beef is so tenderize it taste like it's already been chewed. Hate to say that, but it just has an odd texture. That's really all the bad I have to say other than that like I said it's a little step above some buffets that I've been to. I like when the food is very hot and a lot of times at these buffets it's kind of lukewarm. A couple dishes were just kind of lukewarm. For the first time, I really enjoyed the crab bake. I think I'll try it from now on because it was really good. They do have hot chili oil as well as Sriracha sauce over by the dessert table.. I know I'll be back again because it's sister's favorite. She loves the AUCE. Not so much myself. What I really look for as a hibachi or Mongolian barbecue because then they cook it right in front of you and it's steaming hot. They do not have one at this location, however the food in general is better than another Asian buffet that we frequent. I cannot recommend any thing you can do better since it's a one price eat all you want. I know what that takes as a chef to keep up with that. I'd say you're doing well.

"Lets go down to the Sunset Grill We can watch the working…read moregirls go by" (Don Henley) We enjoyed a lovely late dinner at the Macinack Grille on Saturday night July 27. We didn't have reservations, so picked up a buzzer from the hostess and joined the crowd waiting in the gift shop or lounging around at the entrance. Our wait was about a half hour, and we were seated in a rear dining room that should receive a Gold Medal for Eclectic Design. Our table was covered in laminated Detroit Tiger baseball cards, and the walls were plastered with beer company paraphernalia and Detroit sports memorabilia. Our server Aimy brought our meal -a Cheeseburger Platter ($11.99), and for me a cup of Clam Chowder ($4.49) and Shrimp Steamers ($14.99). My meal was excellent, the chowder was served piping hot and was loaded with chopped clams and potatoes. And man, oh man, were the shrimps great. They were a half pound served shell-on "Caribbean style" with lemon and cocktail sauce. Yes, they were messy to eat but were so worth the mess. Aimy helped me out with a few wet naps. We had an excellent experience here.

The waitress, while friendly enough, did not have a good grasp of the English language. And all for just under $50. This place is definitely not depending on repeat business. Compared to this, place, Long John Silvers is 5 star dining. Walked away hungry and $50 lighter. I won't be back.
