Horse Guard State Park is one of the least developed CT parks I've visited so far.
There's a parking area on Avon Road, which is pretty spacious, but with no facilities. It wouldn't be hard for the state to at least drop off a picnic table here - there's enough room.
The trail itself is of varying terrain and quality. It's pretty wet in places, and I would *highly* recommend wearing sturdy hiking boots. At the time of our visit, there were quite a few wildflowers in bloom, and I even saw a few I haven't seen before.
After about a third of a mile, the character of the trail completely changes, as you ascend a hill. BE CAREFUL! It's steep and rocky, with some tricky footing.
However, once you get up to the top, it's great, with expansive views of the surrounding area.
So, it's kind of a rough park that needs improvements and trail maintenance (and building) but the views are really quite good. read more
