    Lunchtime fishing

Located just at the end of the road from the historic Main Street of Wethersfield is this serene spot only minutes from the hustle & bustle of downtown Hartford. It's a lovely cove for some quiet time,so tranquil and relaxing....convenient for a quick lunchtime getaway. People mostly come here to launch their boats and for fishing. A great place for meditation or even to read a book or watch birds. The cove is enjoyable in all seasons, in spring they have a water lantern festival, which is awesome, in the summer there is a wonderful place to get ice cream within walking distance. I have been told that the foliage is just beautiful in the autumn months. Must come back to check that out soon.

Yes, there is a Yacht Club in Wethersfield, where you can sail your yacht in the Wethersfield Cove. Wethersfield Cove you say? Yes, in the Old Wethersfield part of town, you'll find the Wethersfield Cove and Cove Park. The Cove is a small bay connected to the Connecticut River by a tiny sliver of water known as Folly Brook. Back in the day, Wethersfield saw a lot of shipping commerce in lumber, grain, onions, meats and fish going to the Caribbean in exchange for salt, sugar, molasses and rum. Today the Cove is a very nice place to walk around, see the sights, and maybe see a boat or two. The adjacent park has jogging trails and a huge meadow that today served as the starting point for the Old Wethersfield 5K and 10K race. It's a very pretty place in a very unexpected location.

Is a peaceful place to stop and refresh from a busy day. My husband and I visit the lake to fish and to have picnic.

Convienient boat launch located in Old Wethersfield. We happened to stumble upon the Wethersfield Cove by chance. With several docks and moorings, there is also access to the CT river. I would have never guessed this inlet to be here, but it would be great perfect for kayaking, canoeing and even stand-up paddle-board. With park grounds, T-Ball fields, picnic areas and a soccer field off State Street -- Cove Park is also nearby for you to hang out at and enjoy. The parking lot is huge and great for a lunch break but beware of potholes!

Plenty of wildlife and birds in Cove

Five stars because it is one of the few flat water entrances to the Connecticut River. It is a very easy place to put kayaks in to the water given a nice concrete boat ramp. The water is quite clean and there are tons of small fish. A short paddle underneath me interstate 91 bridge get you a nice view of the Connecticut River where are you are still protected from the current. You can either stay in the truly flat water of the creek that connects the Cove to the river or you can paddle out into the river itself.

Beautiful view of calming waters and the skyline. So peaceful and so quiet. Great place to relax, unwind, think or share time with loved ones and friends. People hang out on their boats, fish, walk around with the kids, sit in their cars or on the docks. The Cove is small but it's a place for everyone who wants to take a break from the hustle and bustle of life. The Cove is a gem.

Summer sunsets over the Cove are not to be missed.

Can you do stand up paddle boarding here?

Yes. The water in the cove itself is flat and there is a also short connector that runs under 91 to the Connecticut River. Depending on your skill/comfort level you might not want to fight the current on the river itself but it is an opportunity to… Read more

Pretty much across the street from the University of Central Connecticut College's campus you'll find this gorgeous park with a big lake, a multi-station fitness trail, and a nice and easy 0.6 mile looped walking path around the lake. The path took us over a few stone and wood bridges and gave us a great look at hundreds of geese and what looked like seagulls. The geese were everywhere - in the water, on the grassy hills, frolicking and flapping their wings in the lake, and honking so much they made us laugh. But the problem we encountered was the byproduct of those hundreds of geese and the ensuing mess they leave on the path around the lake. You'd better watch your step very carefully or you'll be walking into globs of goose shit. It was everywhere, and there was a shit ton of it. Now like I said, ya can't blame a goose for doing what a goose does, but I feel like someone at the municipal level has badly dropped the ball by not better maintaining things.

I'm amazed by the beauty of this place!…read more MDC operates the water treatment plants located at this reservoir. This is a privately owned area and not a public park. There was MDC Police that patrolled the area when I was there. Parking was plentiful when we went on a beautiful spring weekday. There were clean porta potties onsite. There were trails in the woods and out in the open; the trails were paved and gravel. It is opened daily from sunrise to sunset and closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas. There were two trails; 3.4-mile loop red trail and 2.0-mile loop yellow trail. We started off with the gravel yellow trail that has a slight incline. Then we got onto part of the red loop which was near the bridge overlooking the water. We saw a couple of deer in the woods, geese, and turtles in the water. This is where we walked on pavement. Some of the trees were marked by type. The trail was busy with walkers and bikers. Overall, I really enjoyed the hike/walk and can't wait to go back.

Following public protest and legal battle(s) the project was shelved indefinitely back in the 70's. This was also about the time, vehicle traffic was barred on many of the back MDC roadways. What was left, beautiful network of paved and foot beaten paths. Everyday day of the week, the public are welcome to walk, jog, saunter, bicycle these mapped trails. Mountain biking has been throttled down significantly due to excessive wear and tear on the wooded areas. Biking still remains popular long designated routes and in a one-way pattern (for everyones safety). Pedestrians: Please mind the painted walking path, eyes on drifting into the bike path - that way ALL will enjoy. Kilkenny rock has been one of my favorite destinations (refer to an MDC map) this is a nice overlook of the Hartford sky scape. Trails also connect from the Farmington Avenue entrance across to Route 44 passing over Avon Mountain. GPS and one of my favorite apps "All Trails" are helpful even to a season chap like me.

There were numerous packages available in the planning phase and I ultimately went with the 2 hour group paddle board session with instructor guidance and equipment rental. Not to mention included in the cost was a (2) drink voucher for refreshments at a local brewery post paddle board session (which was a welcomed bonus). The location Christine chose for this session was perfect especially for someone just starting off like myself. We started off in a small shallow beach just sitting on our boards and getting a feel for the water. With Christine's concise, easy to follow direction, I upgraded to a kneeled position and finally to a standing, balancing and confident position within a half a hour. When the sun started to go down Christine advised that the group paddle out to a small island in the middle of the lake that was full of wild flowers, to relax and enjoyed the rest of the sunset. At this time we well exceeded the 2 hour mark but Christine was happy to do so for a wonderful experience. Once the weather gets a bit warmer I will definitely be reaching out to Christine for another session!!

After a brief safety video and briefing, we were given our rafting kit, loaded on buses, and brought up river to the raft slip, this was about a 30 minute trip north west. The raft trip ended across the street from where we started. An easy exit, we got out of the boat, returned our kit, and walked across the road to watch the video, and purchase souvenir photographs. We had an excellent day on the river during our 10 mile trip. My 14 year old son and I did the Zoar Gap trip which took most of the day with an hour break for lunch at a nice riverside picnic ground in the mountains. You can bring your own food( appropriately packaged) if you would like. They store it in a water proof bag and stow it on the raft. If there is even a hint of rain or you just don't want to get completely soaked, bring a three season jacket or rain coat. Also, you will be out on a river dress accordingly. NO open toed shoes! This includes flip- flops. You can rent shoes and wetsuits. If you have any medical issues like allergic reactions etc. I would either bring your own Epi Pen kit and medications with you, and stow it in the water proof bag, or possibly think about finding a less isolated outdoor experience. Be warned, white water rafting can be physically strenuous. The only issue I had was the lunch that was provided. Not that it was bad, it was well packaged and pre-made( not to order). If you have food allergies or don't like mayonnaise bring your own food. Zoar Outdoor is not really able to accommodate food allergies or pickey eaters. Mayonnaise was on every sandwich. I don't know why. They could just have provided packets on the side but they there were none available. My son hates mayonnaise so he only ate the chips, pickle, and cookies provided which got him through the remainder of the trip but not exactly a great lunch. One man we were with had a dairy allergy. I'm pretty sure he was not able to eat any of the food. I'm not sure why he didn't make sure a head of time if he could eat the food.I wish I had known the sandwiches had mayonnaise on them a head of time. Not a huge deal, we got over it. The trip was super fun! I would love to go again and will definitely choose Zoar Outdoor again.
