It's a long-term work in progress, but it's coming along nicely.
West Hartford's ambitious Trout Brook Trail is the town's greenway project for walkers, runners, and bicyclists.
Some of the trail is finished, some is scheduled for construction, and some is planned. When all is said and done, it will stretch from New Park Avenue to Asylum Avenue, totaling 3.6 miles end-to-end and will link the Elmwood and northern section of town.
The Trail was started way back in 2009 with Phase I, Phase II was completed in 2015, and Phase IV was done in 2018.
Future legs of the trail to the north are currently in various stages of design and planning. Phase III should be finished in 2022, Phase V is under construction now, Phase VI is slated for 2022 and Phase VII is scheduled for 2023. And I thought the moon had a lot of phases !
Right now, there are two fully finished sections. The North section runs from Trout Brook Drive at Jackson Avenue down to Trout Brook Drive at South Quaker Lane. A physically separate Southern leg continues down to New Park Avenue. The paved trail is eight to ten feet wide, flat and very accessible.
We entered the trail from the lower parking lot at the Elmwood Community Center and enjoyed some very pretty views of the Trout Brook River and Autumn New England foliage. The trail was peaceful, flat and wide with zero obstructions. No dogs, no bicyclists, and truth be told no people except for a nice photographer from Philadelphia we ran into and chatted with. read more
