After calling around, I discovered that guinea pigs are considered "exotic" pets and thus I had a hard time finding a vet that specialized in them. One vet recommended GoldenView and I'm glad they did, because, in my opinion, they are really great. Before seeing the Dr. Kris Ahlgrim, a young male vet spoke with us about our guinea pigs and checked them out. He seemed very patient, thorough, and compassionate. He very much seemed to care about our animals, and for that, I was immensely appreciative. We then saw Dr. Ahlgrim. Dr. Ahlgrim clearly has a passion for her profession, and for the animals she sees. She talked to our little pigs, and petted them, and seemed to make them at ease. She and her vet technician even carefully cut our pigs' nails for us (for free), while telling us how to do it. Ultimately, she said the one probably had ringworm, but that we'd have to have a lab test done in order to confirm it. Sure enough, he did... But the medicine they provided us made it clear up after a few weeks, and now he's back to normal. The day after we left our appointment, GoldenView's staff called to check in with us about our guinea pigs. So, too, did they call a couple weeks later to give us the results of the lab and answer our questions. Flash forward six months later and they even sent us an extremely cute e-mail birthday card for one of our guinea pigs -- so cute! They care about the animals they see, and that's very evident.

But my application experience was so arbitrary I am still a bit shell-shocked. I have had multiple large dogs for some 40 years. I have had Danes for almost 30. I have three respected breeders willing to speak on my behalf as to owner quality. I have vets who have cared for my Danes and Goldens. I have adult children who will speak plainly about what kind of dog-loving home they grew up in. I have records of all my Danes' breeding, vet treatment and care. I have a home I selected in good part because it was suited to my two Danes (now one). And I work from home, so my dogs are never alone or left outside. But -- because of fairly recent relocation and COVID -- I do not have "two local non-family references familiar with me as a dog owner." So, end of process. No phone interview, no visit, no attempt to work around this one checkbox item, even with my other outstanding credentials for giving another Dane a wonderful forever home. Just an incredibly tone-deaf "you can certainly get back to us if you get any friends." I'm sitting here wondering how anyone wins in this situation, especially the Dane who is still waiting for that forever home. Other groups are working with me just fine... but I would both like another Dane and am in the fairly select category of homes that can truly give one all the special care and accommodation the breed needs. So I guess we all just wait, since I don't measure up to the primary GD rescue group's standards.

My Cat requires Flovent inhaler because she has asthma. For six years, when I placed an order with the online pharmacy and the prescription needed to be renewed, they would fax the request to Elk Meadow to get it updated. The new team comes in and gets rid of the fax (don't blame them for removing old technology), but they don't notify us they changed the process. Because Flovent has to come from other countries, it takes 3-6 weeks to get here. Three weeks pass from when I placed my order, and I decide to check the status. It hasn't shipped because the prescription hasn't been renewed! I call Elk Meadow and and ask if they received the fax. This is when I learned they removed the fax machine. I told them it was urgent for me to get the prescription because I'm almost out, and it takes 3-6 weeks. I'm put on hold... she comes back and tells me I need to have the online pharmacy call them. I told her I've worked with this pharmacy for 15 years, and they are not going to call. So I asked her to send the prescription to me (the same prescription Elk Meadow has given for 6 years), and was told no. They were not going to send the prescription until the pharmacy called. I told her I wanted a call from Dr Brian by end of business so I could get it ordered. The lady I was speaking with was rude and not helpful, and Dr Brian never called. This is on a Friday, now nothing can happen until Monday. These people don't give a rats a$$ about animals! I would stay away! I've already setup an appointment to meet with another Vet. When I called Elk Meadow they said, probably another treatment like last time, she'd need to be anesthetized etc so I was prepared for another $300 or so fee with included medications like last time. He took a look and said, not so bad, we can just clean it up, clip what's left of the nail back a bit and, good to go! With pain and antibiotic pills, barely over $100.00 - he could easily have gone for the full treatment like last time, tripling the bill, but of course he did not. We have many vets much closer to home, but for years now have driven up to Bergen Park and Elk Meadow Animal Hospital for a uniformly great experience with a doctor and staff we trust completely.
