I prefer to pay the extra money to go to Showplace 12 or 16 in Schereville, but I know my parents prefer the Hoosier and they love it.

Harper Theater - The line for tickets

This is unfortunately another instance of parents letting their unruly teenage kids go unsupervised…read morethus ruining the theater experience. The theater itself is great. The food at the concessions is typical, I ordered the Harper combo with a popcorn & fountain drink. It was delicious , no complaints. I believe having a designated person that could print, check or help with the purchasing of tickets would greatly help the experience. No one offered to print our tickets out, so we went to the wrong theater at first. Once we went to the right theater, I noticed someone was sitting in one of our seats. Ok no big deal. However the people I sat next to, who I'm assuming were younger teenagers, were very distracting. They kept talking & playing around in their seats, then the girl sitting next to me kept playing on her phone scrolling on social media, taking pictures and then at one point accepted a face time call in the middle of the theater. It didn't seem like something someone who paid money to see a movie would do; as the young couple didn't seem to be interested in the movie at all. Anyways, I told the people at front whom I'm assuming is the manager. They seemed very apologetic & wanted to make sure they made things right so I'd return again. I think my rule of thumb for this theater is to not go when school is on break. That seems to be when these type of issues arise. Again I don't think it's the theaters fault in this case, but something needs to change. The movie theater itself was cool, the sound and visual was cool. I like that it's a smaller theater, it's just whenever there are disruptions it becomes painfully obvious and distracting.

Beautiful bar area, dining area, sitting area and always a creative photo area. On this day crowds were everywhere, mostly wearing something purple. The theater was organized having the movie "The Color Purple" in 6 different theaters all starting at different times. This was perfect as today was opening day. There could be a little more attention given to the ladies bathroom.

I say this place is a solid 4 if not 3.5 stars. The restrooms aren't as clean as they could be but I think patrons are used to the self flushing toilets that other theaters offer. The staff is friendly, their uniforms are almost nonexistent and I see generally wearing primarily black is the look. But I'm not sure this place is getting the foot traffic required to make enough profit to provide a standard uniform for staff. The seat are comfy, and I enjoyed watching the Little Mermaid yesterday (Thursday). When I left there was a LIVE DJ and the bar was more serviced!! That's when I initially noticed the Barbie Movie themed drinks. Too bad I didn't see them prior otherwise I could've been sipping while watching my film. There's a comfy seating aren't set to the DJ booth, also booth seating available on the other end of the bar area. There are screens showing live games or news over the bar area, and this place has really taken the time to prioritize being family friendly. They seem to have a different vendor available every evening or at least the vendor for Thursday is different from the vendor I'm seeing today (Friday). I had a surprisingly good time seeing the Little Mermaid ‍ so I knew I would be back Friday for a not really late at all check-in at the bar . Definitely glad I came back and will come again with more because with the free parking on premises and proximity to the Red Line train it really can't be beat! I say overcome any hesitations you may have of the neighborhood and ENJOY this treasure.

Sometimes, the screenings are followed by panel discussions with faculty or even filmmakers. The most memorable screening I attended was of "The Janes" (2022): based on the real-life story of bad-ass women from the late 60s and early 70s who provided abortion services to Chicago women before the legalization of abortion (Roe v Wade) in 1973. There was a panel discussion following the screening with the actual Janes (now in their 80s) who spoke about their experiences as part of the Jane Project. It was an incredible experience. Since then, I've been going to Doc quite consistently. They often have fun themes, such as a martial arts series, and also screen mainstream films like Barbie and most recently, One Battle After Another. There are quarters where I don't enjoy their selections, but when I do go, I always enjoy the movie-going experience. The theatre is medium-sized and quite shabby. It is usually very clean and the sound and picture quality are great. The website is quite poorly designed, so I would recommend buying tickets in person. I recommend a visit to Doc if you are in Hyde Park and find their selections interesting: the calendar is on the Doc Films website.

The conversations and exchanges I had with other guests gave the event a deeper level of complexity. (Pro tip: it's on the third floor). Even with validation, parking was $10 which feels pricey. The theater itself is cool with their video of vortex (VHS/DVD rental area) and throwback movie posters throughout. The theater we were assigned to was extremely hot throughout the entire movie which made for an uncomfortable experience. Food and drinks are now ordered via a QR code and servers bring your food and drink orders directly to you at your seat. One plate of food - chicken tenders and fries - took almost an hour to arrive! Not sure what happened there. Overall, the food was fine, we had mozzarella sticks and popcorn as well. I wouldn't say anything was mind blowing, but it was good. After the movie, the women's bathroom lights were out so it was super dark and the door to the stall I was in didn't close. All in all a sub par experience. Sounds like Alamo needs a lil maintenance.
